Reset

Menu path: Reset (main menu) · Boards: all (RP2040 / RP2350) · Requires: —

Overview

Everything that restarts the machine — from a gentle in-emulator soft reset all the way to rebooting the firmware itself. There are two layers:

  • The Reset menu (main menu → Reset) — Soft reset · Hard reset · firmware reboot · (MurmulatorOS) · Defaults.
  • Reset to… (default Alt+F11) — a machine-dependent picker that restarts straight into a chosen ROM: 128K / 48K, and — depending on the model — TR-DOS, the Mr Gluk Reset Service, or the Service ROM. On a plain 48K machine there is nothing to pick, so it resets directly.

Two more reset-related actions live on hotkeys: Hard reset (default F11) and the NMI "Magic Button" (default Alt+F10).

All reset hotkeys are reconfigurable in Options → Host keyboard / Hotkeys. The keys shown here are the defaults.

Menu structure

Reset (main menu → Reset)
├── Soft reset restart, restoring the persistent fast-snapshot if one is set
├── Hard reset (F11) full machine reset, clears any mounted RAM file
├── RP2350 / RP2040 reset (F12) reboot the firmware itself (confirm)
├── MurmulatorOS only shown when /.firmware exists — boot back into MOS (confirm)
└── Defaults wipe saved settings (NVS) and reboot (confirm)

Reset to… (Alt+F11) machine-dependent ROM picker — see table below
NMI / Magic Button (Alt+F10) trigger a Non-Maskable Interrupt (DivMMC / Pentagon menu)

The Reset menu

Item Hotkey Description
Soft reset — Restart the machine. If a persistent fast-snapshot is set (Storage → Snapshot), the snapshot is reloaded instead of a cold boot; otherwise it is a normal reset
Hard reset F11 Full machine reset. Any mounted RAM file is cleared first. On Profi this boots the Service ROM (same as Reset to → Service ROM)
RP2350 / RP2040 reset F12 Reboot the firmware (the whole emulator restarts), after a confirmation. Label matches the board's MCU
MurmulatorOS — Only appears when a /.firmware file is present on SD: deletes it and reboots back into MurmulatorOS (confirm)
Defaults — Erase the saved settings store (storage.nvs) and reboot, restoring factory defaults (confirm)

Soft vs. Hard. Soft reset is snapshot-aware — it brings you back to your saved fast-snapshot state if one exists. Hard reset always cold-boots and drops any mounted RAM file.

Factory reset (hold R at boot)

The Defaults action is also reachable without the menu — useful if a bad setting prevents the emulator from booting normally. Hold the R key while the machine powers on. The boot window is guided and keyboard-aware:

  • After ~0.4 s a centered "Hold R for Factory Reset" hint appears, so you know the window is open (a quick PS/2 R-hold is caught before the hint even shows).
  • The window waits until the keyboard is actually ready — a slow-enumerating USB keyboard no longer misses it: once the keyboard appears there is a ~0.8 s grace to press R, with a hard cap of ~3.5 s if no keyboard shows up at all.

If R is seen, a "Factory reset / Reset all settings to defaults?" confirmation pops up. On confirm it wipes the settings store (storage.nvs) and reboots with every setting back to factory defaults — exactly like Reset → Defaults.

Reset to… (per machine)

Alt+F11 restarts the machine straight into a chosen ROM. The list of targets depends on the current machine/ROM set:

Machine / mode Reset-to targets
48K (none — resets directly to 48K)
128K / +2 / +3 128K · 48K
Pentagon TR-DOS · 128K · 48K
Pentagon + Mr Gluk (ROM set 128Kpg) Mr Gluk Reset Srvs · TR-DOS · 128K · 48K
Profi Service ROM · TR-DOS · 128K · 48K
esxDOS / DivMMC active Soft Reset · Hard Reset
  • TR-DOS cold-starts from the TR-DOS ROM (sets the TR-DOS flag + ROM latch) — handy for booting a freshly mounted disk.
  • Mr Gluk Reset Srvs (Pentagon with the Gluk ROM set) boots the Mr Gluk Reset Service ROM — the Pentagon service/reset menu (also the home of the RTC / Mr Gluk TimeKeeper).
  • Service ROM (Profi) boots the Profi SYS/Service ROM.
  • 128K and 48K restart into the respective BASIC ROM (48K also locks paging).

esxDOS / DivMMC. When DivMMC is active, Reset to shows Soft Reset / Hard Reset instead: Soft keeps the DivMMC RAM (esxDOS sees its valid flag and jumps to the file browser); Hard clears the DivMMC RAM so esxDOS re-initialises from scratch.

NMI — the "Magic Button"

The NMI hotkey (default Alt+F10) fires a Non-Maskable Interrupt — the classic "Magic Button" used by snapshot/disk interfaces. What it does depends on what's active:

  • DivMMC active — triggers the esxDOS NMI (the automap at 0x0066), opening the esxDOS menu.
  • Pentagon / Profi — opens a small NMI / Magic Button menu (Magic Button → NMI-DOS entry).
  • Otherwise — a plain NMI is triggered directly.

(On a ZX Byte machine the NMI menu additionally offers the COBMECT-mode ROM toggle.)

How to test

Action What it checks Expected result
Reset → Soft reset (with a fast-snapshot saved) Snapshot-aware soft reset Returns to the saved snapshot state
F11 (Hard reset) Full reset Machine cold-boots; mounted RAM file cleared
Alt+F11 on Pentagon Per-machine picker Menu lists TR-DOS / 128K / 48K
Alt+F11 → TR-DOS (with a disk in A) TR-DOS cold-boot Disk boots / catalogue reads
Alt+F10 with DivMMC on NMI Magic Button esxDOS menu appears
Reset → Defaults NVS wipe Reboots to factory settings
Hold R while powering on Factory reset shortcut "Reset all settings to defaults?" dialog appears; confirm wipes NVS and reboots to defaults
