dsh-solidworks 0.2.1

@lroolle lroolle released this 18 Oct 17:35

Fixes found by watching real sessions. The README now shows four of them: a flange modeled from one paragraph, a selected face rounded on request, a shaft and flange assembled and checked, and the drawing exported.

dsh plugin --profile web add @dshworks/dsh-solidworks@0.2.1

On a Windows VM paired with an earlier version, run pair.cmd again so the VM gets the new bridge. From this version on, an outdated bridge says exactly that instead of "unknown tool".

Why upgrade

  • The right document. With a part and its drawing open under the same name, sw_export {doc: "flange.slddrw"} exported the part. An exact name now always wins, and a .sldprt, .sldasm or .slddrw name only matches that kind of document.
  • Cuts that land. A cut sketched on a plane at the body's boundary pointed away from the material and removed nothing; a session spent three calls finding reverse. With no direction given, such a cut is now made the other way and the step says reversed.
  • You can watch it. In documents the bridge made or opened, builds and assemblies zoom to fit, so the part is on screen while dsh works.
  • Clearer coordinates for the model: a 12 mm plate on the top plane has its top face at y = 12.

Verified, 2026-10-18

  • SOLIDWORKS 2016 SP1 and 2019 SP0: 66 of 66 live checks each with this exe, including both fixes (an exact π·5²·4 mm³ reversed cut; a drawing exported by its .slddrw name).
  • The four README clips: real dsh 0.2.0-rc.2 sessions with deepseek-flash, 12, 17, 23 and 13 tool calls.

The exe

swbridge.exe below is the one in the npm package. CI rebuilds it from source to the same SHA-256 (bridge/swbridge.exe.sha256, .NET SDK 8.0.426):

SOLIDWORKS for DeepSeek Harness. dsh now models parts, assembles them, checks them and draws them, in a running SOLIDWORKS 2016 or later, on the same Windows PC or in a Windows VM on your Mac.

dsh plugin --profile web add @dshworks/dsh-solidworks

Same Windows PC: nothing else. dsh on a Mac, SOLIDWORKS in a Parallels VM: start dsh once, then in the VM run \\Mac\Home\.dsh\dsh-solidworks\windows\pair.cmd. Already paired on 0.1.0: update the plugin and run pair.cmd once more so the VM gets the new bridge.

New in 0.2.0: 8 tools, 21 in all

  • sw_new and sw_build: model a part in steps. Sketch lines, polylines, rectangles, circles, arcs and centerlines on a plane or a face; extrude or cut (blind, through all, mid-plane, draft), revolve, fillet, chamfer, shell, offset plane, delete. Every coordinate is a model-space point in mm; faces and edges are picked by a point on them. A failing step rolls the call back. Each feature comes back with its dimensions, and the part with its volume and box.
  • sw_probe: the face, edge or vertex at a point, or whatever you have selected in SOLIDWORKS right now; distance and angle between two.
  • sw_study: up to 50 variants of dimensions and variables in one call, each rebuilt and measured, every value put back and checked.
  • sw_assemble, sw_interference, sw_bom: insert saved parts and mate them, find overlapping parts with their volume, count a bill of materials (optionally as CSV).
  • sw_drawing: views in first- or third-angle projection at the largest standard scale that fits, with the model's dimensions.
  • sw_view puts up to six views on one picture and no longer crops wide models; sw_save with a path saves a new document as a file.

Your work stays yours

The bridge deletes only features it built in the session, keeps a sketch of yours that one of them consumed, refuses names already in the part before making anything, and refuses to build while the rollback bar is above the end of the tree. Source files stay read-only by default; saving over them still needs --allow-save.

Fixed

  • sw_parameters could name a parent feature's dimension after the feature displaying it (an extrude shows its sketch plane's offset) and hide the real one.

Verified, 2026-10-18

  • SOLIDWORKS 2016 SP1 and 2019 SP0: 64 of 64 live checks each, with this exe, against values computed from the geometry asked for (volumes, areas, overlap volumes, a parts count, a PDF).
  • Real dsh 0.2.0-rc.2 with deepseek-flash: one prompt modeled a plate, checked its volume, drew it and exported the PDF in 11 tool calls, all completed.
  • Not yet: SOLIDWORKS 2020+, Windows 10, x64 hardware; lofts, sweeps, patterns, Hole Wizard and sheet metal are not in sw_build.

dsh-solidworks 0.1.0

SOLIDWORKS for DeepSeek Harness. dsh reads, edits in memory, rebuilds, renders and exports the models in a running SOLIDWORKS 2016 or later, on the same Windows PC or in a Windows VM on your Mac.

dsh plugin --profile web add @dshworks/dsh-solidworks

Same Windows PC: nothing else. dsh on a Mac, SOLIDWORKS in a Parallels VM: start dsh once, then in the VM run \\Mac\Home\.dsh\dsh-solidworks\windows\pair.cmd.

What is in it

  • 13 tools: status, open, inspect, features, parameters, components, mass properties, edit, rebuild, export, save, close, view.
  • swbridge.exe: .NET Framework 4.8, no runtime to install, no admin, no SOLIDWORKS interop referenced. Every call is late-bound through IDispatch on one STA thread, so one build drives 2016 and later. A plain stdio MCP server for any other client: swbridge.exe mcp.
  • Read-only by default. Exports confined to allowed folders, no overwrite unless asked, saving over sources only with --allow-save, never discards work it did not make, never starts, closes or clicks SOLIDWORKS.

Verified, 2026-10-17

  • SOLIDWORKS 2016 SP1 and 2019 SP0: 34 of 34 live checks each, with this exe.
  • Real dsh 0.2.0-rc.2 with deepseek-flash: dsh on Linux with SOLIDWORKS in a VM (listen), and dsh on the Windows PC itself (spawn).
  • Not yet: SOLIDWORKS 2020+, Windows 10, x64 hardware.
