Release list
OpenDana 1.0
OpenDana 1.0: the first complete release.
It brings the fixes below over 0.2.1.
OpenDana does not include any of the original game's content. To play, you need your own copy of the European ROM. On first start, OpenDana reads it once to extract the game's data into a local folder, and does not need it again afterwards. See the README for the exact file and its SHA-256.
What changed since 0.2.1
Sound
- Linux packages (TAR and AppImage): the bundled SDL2 now includes the PulseAudio and PipeWire drivers, loaded at run time, so the game reaches the sound server directly instead of only through the ALSA plug-in. A system without them still starts.
- If the sound engine stops on an error, the game now says so on its log (code and tick), so a loss of sound can be diagnosed.
- If the system's sound server goes away (for example when it is restarted), the game now reopens its sound device by itself instead of staying silent until it is restarted. It also logs what its audio does.
Gameplay
- Scrolling rounds: the hero can now climb into the row that has just been uncovered at the top of the screen, and follows the scroll upwards.
- The stone: a pushed stone stops beside a fire, puts it out and stays a stone (before, it slid into the fire). While it slides it is drawn with its own tiles, and crossing a fire on an ice floor keeps the put-out effect (flames keep animating, the steam appears).
Screens and messages
- States: the save, load and remove messages name the slot ("State saved to slot 3", "State loaded from slot 3", "State removed from slot 3"), and a refused load or failed save says which slot it was. The messages are shorter so they fit the toast without being cut.
- States: opening a confirmation (delete or overwrite) clears the previous message, so no stale text sits under the question.
- Ending: stray rows of text and a black band in one of the story scenes are gone.
Command line
--shot-frame Npast the end of the run is now an error (it prints the frame asked for and the last one available, writes no file and exits non-zero) instead of silently saving another frame.

Every package carries the licence, the third-party notices and the corresponding source code. opendana-1.0.0-appimage-runtime-source.tar.xz is the source of the AppImage runtime. Each *.audit.json is the release audit of its package. To check a download, run sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS (on macOS, shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS).
How it was tested
Each package passed its packaging checks, the import of the ROM and the first-run screen, and a recorded play-through (4,841 ticks) gives the same per-tick hashes on the three systems. The licence, source and ROM audits of every package are clean.
- Linux: tested on Linux.
- Windows: tested under Wine (wine64), not on a real Windows machine.
- macOS: tested on an x86_64 virtual machine. The arm64 half of the universal app is built but has not been run on Apple Silicon.
Known issues
- During the credits, for about half a second when a character enters, a few stray digits are drawn in a small area of the screen.
- A pushed stone has been compared with the original game in 11 of the 30 rounds that have one.
- When a boss celebration puts more than eight sprites on a line, a different part of the picture flickers than in the original.
- Windows is tested under Wine and the Apple Silicon half of the macOS app is built but untested.
Built from commit 51a9faa, which opendana --version prints.
OpenDana 0.2.1
OpenDana 0.2.1: a small maintenance release. There is no change to the game itself.
OpenDana does not include any of the original game's content. To play, you need your own copy of the European ROM. On first start, OpenDana reads it once to extract the game's data into a local folder, and does not need it again afterwards. See the README for the exact file and its SHA-256.
What changed since 0.2.0
- The example mod is now
mods/example(it wasmods/ejemplo):opendana --mod example. - The messages of the level validator in the editor are in English.
- README: the icon, the name of the game and a clearer explanation of what the one-time import does.

How it was tested

OpenDana 0.2.0
OpenDana 0.2.0: the first public release.
OpenDana does not include the game. On first start it asks for your own copy of the European ROM, imports it once and then runs without it. See the README for the exact file and its SHA-256.
