VLC PSS Demuxer v0.3

A VLC Media Player demuxer plugin for playing PlayStation 2 .PSS video files with sound directly in VLC.

The plugin adds support for PSS files containing Sony SShd / SSbd PCM audio streams that are normally ignored by VLC, allowing compatible PSS files to be played with both MPEG-2 video and audio.

Tested configuration

This release has been tested and confirmed working with:

  • Windows 10 64-bit
  • VLC Media Player 3.0.23 64-bit
  • VLC installed in the standard location:

C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\

The included libpss_plugin.dll is a 64-bit Windows plugin.

Important: VLC 32-bit is not supported by this DLL.

Other VLC 3.x 64-bit versions may work, but VLC 3.0.23 64-bit is the version currently tested and confirmed.

VLC 4.x has not been tested.

Installation — Windows

1. Install VLC

Install VLC Media Player 3.0.23 64-bit or use an existing compatible VLC 64-bit installation.

2. Close VLC

Make sure VLC is completely closed before installing the plugin.

3. Download the plugin

Download:

libpss_plugin.dll

from this GitHub Release.

4. Copy the DLL into VLC

Copy:

libpss_plugin.dll

to:

C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins\demux\

The final path should therefore be:

C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins\demux\libpss_plugin.dll

Windows may ask for administrator permission when copying the file into Program Files.

5. Rebuild the VLC plugin cache

Open PowerShell or Command Prompt and run:

& "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --reset-plugins-cache

VLC may start after this command. You can close it once the plugin cache has been rebuilt.

6. Play a PSS file

You can now:

  • right-click a .PSS file and select Open with → VLC media player, or
  • drag the .PSS file into VLC.

You can also associate .PSS files permanently with VLC in Windows.

After association, simply:

Double-click a .PSS file → VLC opens it with video and sound.

No command-line option such as --demux=pss is required for normal .PSS files.

Verify that the plugin is installed

If you want to check whether VLC recognizes the plugin, open PowerShell and run:

cd C:\Windows\System32
& "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --list

VLC may save the output into:

vlc-help.txt

Then run:

Select-String -Path ".\vlc-help.txt" -Pattern "pss|PlayStation|Sony"

A correctly loaded plugin should display:

pss                    Sony PlayStation 2 PSS demuxer

Uninstallation

Close VLC and delete:

C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins\demux\libpss_plugin.dll

Then rebuild the VLC plugin cache:

& "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --reset-plugins-cache

Compatibility notes

The .PSS format was used by PlayStation 2 software and can contain different audio variants.

This version specifically adds support for the PSS structure tested with:

  • MPEG-2 video
  • private_stream_1
  • Sony SShd / SSbd
  • PCM 16-bit little-endian audio
  • Stereo
  • 48 kHz
  • Sony-style channel interleaving

Not every PSS variant used by every PlayStation 2 title has been tested yet.

If you find a .PSS file that plays without audio, plays incorrectly, or crashes VLC, please open a GitHub Issue and describe the source/game and behavior.

Please do not upload copyrighted game videos or PSS files to the repository.

Plugin de démultiplexage pour VLC Media Player permettant de lire directement des fichiers vidéo PlayStation 2 .PSS avec le son.

Le plugin ajoute notamment la prise en charge des pistes audio Sony SShd / SSbd PCM présentes dans certains fichiers PSS mais normalement ignorées par VLC.

Il devient ainsi possible de lire directement dans VLC :

vidéo MPEG-2 + audio

sans devoir préalablement convertir ou démultiplexer le fichier .PSS.

Configuration testée

Cette version a été testée et son fonctionnement confirmé avec :

  • Windows 10 64 bits
  • VLC Media Player 3.0.23 64 bits
  • VLC installé dans son emplacement standard :

C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\

Le fichier libpss_plugin.dll fourni dans cette Release est un plugin Windows 64 bits.

Important : cette DLL n'est pas compatible avec VLC 32 bits.

D'autres versions VLC 3.x 64 bits peuvent fonctionner, mais VLC 3.0.23 64 bits est actuellement la version testée et confirmée.

VLC 4.x n'a pas encore été testé.

Installation — Windows

1. Installer VLC

Installez VLC Media Player 3.0.23 64 bits ou utilisez une installation VLC 64 bits compatible déjà présente sur votre ordinateur.

2. Fermer VLC

Fermez complètement VLC avant d'installer le plugin.

3. Télécharger le plugin

Téléchargez :

libpss_plugin.dll

depuis cette Release GitHub.

4. Installer la DLL

Copiez :

libpss_plugin.dll

dans :

C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins\demux\

Le chemin complet doit donc être :

C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins\demux\libpss_plugin.dll

Windows peut demander une autorisation administrateur pour copier le fichier dans Program Files.

5. Reconstruire le cache des plugins VLC

Ouvrez PowerShell ou l'Invite de commandes et exécutez :

& "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --reset-plugins-cache

VLC peut se lancer après cette commande. Vous pouvez ensuite le fermer.

6. Lire un fichier PSS

Vous pouvez maintenant :

  • faire un clic droit sur un fichier .PSS puis Ouvrir avec → VLC media player ;
  • ou glisser directement le fichier .PSS dans VLC.

Vous pouvez également définir VLC comme application par défaut pour les fichiers .PSS.

Une fois l'association effectuée :

Double-clic sur un fichier .PSS → VLC → vidéo + son.

Aucune option spéciale comme --demux=pss n'est nécessaire pour une utilisation normale.

Vérifier l'installation

Pour vérifier que VLC détecte correctement le plugin, ouvrez PowerShell et exécutez :

cd C:\Windows\System32
& "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --list

Sous Windows, VLC peut enregistrer cette liste dans :

vlc-help.txt

Vous pouvez alors rechercher le plugin avec :

Select-String -Path ".\vlc-help.txt" -Pattern "pss|PlayStation|Sony"

Si l'installation est correcte, vous devriez voir :

pss                    Sony PlayStation 2 PSS demuxer

Désinstallation

Fermez VLC puis supprimez :

C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins\demux\libpss_plugin.dll

Ensuite, reconstruisez le cache :

& "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --reset-plugins-cache

Remarques concernant la compatibilité

Le format .PSS a été utilisé par différents logiciels PlayStation 2 et plusieurs variantes audio peuvent exister.

Cette version prend notamment en charge la structure testée utilisant :

  • vidéo MPEG-2
  • private_stream_1
  • Sony SShd / SSbd
  • PCM 16 bits little-endian
  • stéréo
  • 48 kHz
  • entrelacement des canaux de type Sony

Toutes les variantes PSS utilisées par tous les jeux PlayStation 2 n'ont pas encore été testées.

Si vous trouvez un fichier .PSS sans son, présentant des erreurs de lecture ou provoquant un plantage de VLC, vous pouvez ouvrir une Issue GitHub en précisant le jeu ou logiciel d'origine et le problème rencontré.

Merci de ne pas publier de vidéos de jeux ou fichiers PSS protégés par le droit d'auteur dans le dépôt.
