Install: npx -y agent-illustrator (npm), or see the README for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and VS Code setup.

First npm release (npx -y agent-illustrator); the repository is public.

  • trace op: reduces a reference PNG or JPEG to N colors and traces each into an editable path, abutting (default, no gaps between layers) or stacked, with region and placement. The 37th op. The palette comes from the flat insides of shapes (plus thin features no blend explains), edges are placed to a fraction of a pixel from the antialiasing, and outlines become exact lines with sharp corners, exact circles, or smoothed curves. On the reference logo it re-renders at 100% pixel similarity (99.95% at 4× zoom against the vector source).
Grainy images (photos, JPEG noise) are smoothed per layer before outlining; a 1024×768 photo at 12 colors traces in about 4 s.
Translucent colors (soft shadows, glows) are kept as layers with fillOpacity, below the opaque ones. An edge between two colors is not mistaken for a third palette color that is a tint of one toward the other.
  • apply_ops preview: true runs a batch without changing the document and returns a PNG of the result.
  • Image source: the server reads reference images from a file path (PNG or JPEG, up to 25 MB and 36 megapixels) and caches the decoded pixels. The lint in an apply_ops reply skips the layers of a trace group; the lint tool still checks them.
  • New agent-kit guide trace.
  • MIT license (LICENSE, license fields; the built bundle carries it in dist/).
  • CI: pnpm/action-setup@v6 (Node 24); build runs before tests so the eval server tests run in CI.
  • README: installation (npm, or from source) and a usage walkthrough.
  • rasterize without bundled fonts loads the system fonts only when something draws text (text nodes or the ids overlay); renders without text no longer pay seconds of font loading on hosts with many fonts.
