Wind Waker Recomp 0.3.0 for Windows (x64) and macOS (Apple Silicon)
Wind Waker Recomp 0.3.0
Speed log: every speed optimization since the fork, 28 September to 1 October, with what each one measured.
Faster on slower PCs, and frame interpolation up to 240 FPS (Windows).
- No more slow motion on slower CPUs. On a CPU with few cores, 60 FPS frame interpolation could hold
the game itself below its 30 frames a second, so everything ran in slow motion. 0.2.2 ran at 24-28 game
frames a second on the test stand-in for a 4-core laptop CPU. Frame interpolation now steps aside when the
game falls below full speed and tries again later, waiting longer each time (up to 2 minutes). On the same
stand-in the game now keeps its full 30. The session log says when it happens ([interp-pace]). - About 13 percent more speed for the game itself. The translated game code reaches memory more
cheaply: every guest load and store used to be a function call. On the 4-core stand-in, unpaced, the game
runs 37-38 frames a second where 0.2.2 ran 33, and the game thread's CPU time per frame fell from about
27.5 ms to 24-25 ms. Every PC benefits; a slower CPU most. - Match the display (frame interpolation, up to 240 FPS). A new choice in Settings, Display, Frame
rate shows as many frames as your display does, in whole steps of 30: 240 on a 240 Hz display, 180 on
200 Hz, 150 on 165 Hz, 120 on 144 Hz, 90 on 100 Hz, 60 on 60 or 75 Hz. The menu shows the number. It
follows the window to another display. Not yet seen on a real 240 Hz screen (simulated here).
The Mac app is unchanged, so this release includes the latest Mac build, 0.2.0.
On a laptop with integrated graphics that still runs slowly: choose 30 FPS (F10) and set Render
resolution to 1x in the settings (F1). If it is still slow, please send the newest session log from
%APPDATA%\BlueWake\logs with your report.
From 0.2.x: save states (F5 saves, F8 on Windows or F9 on Mac loads), climbing any wall, the
fullscreen fix, one Frame rate list, a more responsive mouse camera. Save states from 0.2.2 load in 0.3.0.

- On those 4 cores the in-between frames mostly stay off: they still cost more than the CPU has spare.
On the full PC, 60 FPS interpolation runs as before. - The game is the same: every captured frame matches 0.2.2's (19 of 19, with the graphics translation
synchronous so capture timing cannot move), and the dumped real and in-between frames at 60 FPS match the
earlier release's (62 of 62). - The download as a player gets it: the first launch prepared the disc from an

Wind Waker Recomp 0.2.2 for Windows (x64) and macOS (Apple Silicon)
Wind Waker Recomp 0.2.2
Updated October 1 (Windows, same version). If you downloaded 0.2.2 earlier, download it again for:
One Frame rate list. Settings, Display now has a single Frame rate list:
- 30 FPS (the game's own)
- 60 FPS or 120 FPS with frame interpolation (the in-between frames that used to be
called Smooth Motion)- 60 Hz game logic (experimental, not recommended), which makes the game itself run 60 times a
second, so parts of it run too fast. Before, these were two separate settings and easy to mix up. Each choice now says what it does.
F10 still turns frame interpolation off and on.A more responsive mouse camera. The camera now uses the mouse's newest movement when it updates.
Before, it used what had arrived by the previous frame. That shaves about 20 ms of delay on average
(up to a full game frame, 33 ms), at 60 FPS and at 30. Measured on the test PC: the movement the
camera used was 21.5 to 55 ms old before, and is now at most one game frame old.
Windows fix: going fullscreen no longer crashes. On some PCs, switching to fullscreen (F11, Alt+Enter
or the settings) crashed the game: it was reported on an Intel UHD 620 laptop, where every switch
crashed, and 0.2.1 did not fix it. While the window changed size, a frame from frame interpolation could be
shown at the same moment, using parts of the picture that were being replaced. That now waits for the
resize to finish. On slower graphics the two met often; on fast ones, rarely.
The Mac app is unchanged, so this release includes the latest Mac build, 0.2.0.
If the game runs slowly on a laptop with integrated graphics, choose 30 FPS (F10 turns frame
interpolation off) and set Render resolution to 1x in the settings (F1). Frame interpolation draws
each frame a second time to show 60 FPS, which doubles the work for the graphics chip. If it is still slow, please send the newest session
log from %APPDATA%\BlueWake\logs with your report. It names your CPU and GPU, and each second it says
which part held the game back.
From 0.2.1 and 0.2.0: closing the game no longer shows an error; Restart now in the settings no
longer crashes; save states (F5 saves, F8 on Windows or F9 on Mac loads); climb any wall.

- The crash, reproduced. The crash was made likely by holding the game to two CPU threads with a

- Every run closed normally.
- Nothing else changed:
- Every captured frame is the same as 0.1.0's.
- The in-between frames of frame interpolation are the same.
- The speed is unchanged: full speed on 12 efficiency cores standing in for a slower CPU.

For the October 1 update:
- Frame rate list: each of the four choices was made in a running game. It showed what it does,
and the settings file kept it. - Mouse: with scripted movement sent through the same event queue as a real mouse, the camera
began turning a game frame sooner than before and ended at the same angle, so no movement is lost
or counted twice. - Nothing else changed:
- Every captured frame is still 0.1.0's.
- Fullscreen survived 30 quick switches.

- The translated game is the same as in the first 0.2.2.

Wind Waker Recomp 0.2.1 for Windows (x64) and macOS (Apple Silicon)
Wind Waker Recomp 0.2.1
Windows fixes:
- Closing the game no longer shows an error. Since 0.1.0, closing the window showed "BlueWake
stopped with an error (status 1)", which looked like a crash. The game had closed normally; it now
just closes. - Restart now no longer crashes. The button in the settings, for changes that need a restart (such as
"Keep the picture's shape", the aspect ratio or Better Wind Waker), crashed the game instead of
restarting it. It now closes the game normally and starts it again with the new settings.
The Mac app has neither problem, so this release includes the latest Mac build, 0.2.0, unchanged.
New since 0.1 on both Windows and Mac (from 0.2.0):
- Save states: F5 saves the whole running game, and F8 (Windows) or F9 (Mac) loads the latest. Both
are also buttons in the settings. - Climb any wall (off by default): Link climbs plain walls on a stamina wheel, as in Breath of the
Wild. - A faster graphics thread for slower CPUs.
See 0.2.0's notes for the details.

Wind Waker Recomp 0.2.0 for macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows (x64)
Wind Waker Recomp 0.2.0
Save states. F5 saves the whole running game, and a second key loads the latest state: F9 on a Mac
(hold fn on a MacBook keyboard) and F8 on Windows, where F9 shows the frame rate. Both are also buttons
in the options menu. A state is taken at the next moment the game is between frames with no scene change,
door or memory card write under way, so it can take a moment. Saving takes about a fifth of a second and
loading about a tenth. States are kept with your other files: in states/ in the Mac app's data folder,
and in %APPDATA%\BlueWake\states on Windows. A state is meant for the build that made it, and a later
build may refuse it. The memory card is not part of a state, so keep using the game's own save for
anything you want to keep.
Climb any wall (off by default; in the Mac's Gameplay options, and in the Mods tab of the Windows
settings). Link climbs a plain wall the way he climbs ivy, like Breath of the Wild: walk or jump into a steep
wall to grab it. Climbing and hanging use up a stamina wheel drawn beside him (12 seconds by default, 4 to
30 in the menu). When it runs out he lets go, and he can climb again once it has refilled on the ground.
Ivy, ladders, ledges he pulls himself up onto, walls he sidles along and blocks he pushes all behave as in
the game.
Faster graphics on the Mac. The Mac gets Windows 0.1.1's graphics-thread speedups (the pipeline state
worked out from the GX registers is reused for about 96 percent of draws, with cheaper lookups and Smooth
Motion hand-offs). Windows keeps 0.1.1's work for slower CPUs and its native game code.

WindWakerRecomp-0.2.0-macos-arm64.zip, built from main at b39bd0d (RecompCore 8ab24da).
- The compiled shader caches now live in the app's data folder, so the first launch after updating
compiles them again (one slower start). - Save states from macos.4 or earlier may be refused (the graphics state they hold has changed).
Windows (x64, Windows 10 or 11)

Wind Waker Recomp 0.1.0 for macOS (Apple Silicon) — macos.5
Wind Waker Recomp for Apple Silicon Macs and Windows PCs: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker statically recompiled to run natively, with Metal (Mac) and Direct3D 12 (Windows) rendering, Smooth Motion (60 or 120 frames a second from the game's 30), widescreen, controller, keyboard and mouse support, and Better Wind Waker's settings.
Windows x64: the newest build, WindWakerRecomp-0.1.1-windows-x64.zip, is on the macos.4 release with its source zip, for Windows 10 and 11: unpack it, run BlueWake.exe and choose your disc image.
New in macos.5 (Mac):
- Save states, like an emulator's: F5 saves the whole running game and F9 loads the latest (hold fn on a MacBook keyboard), or use Save state and Load latest state in the options. They are kept in the data folder's
states/and work across launches of the same version. - Climb any wall (Gameplay options, off by default): Link climbs steep walls the way he climbs ivy, as in Breath of the Wild, on a stamina wheel beside him (12 seconds by default); when it runs out he lets go, and he can climb again once it has refilled on the ground. Ivy, ladders, ledges and walls he sidles along work as before.
- The Windows build's graphics worker speedups: each draw's pipeline state is cached instead of derived again (96 percent of draws), with cheaper pipeline and texture lookups and Smooth Motion hand-offs. On slow cores this took Windows from 23-26 to 29-30 game frames a second; on an M3 Max, where it was already fast, the worker is about 4 percent less busy, so slower Macs should gain more.
- The compiled shader caches now live in the app's data folder, so the first launch after updating compiles them again.
Earlier, macos.4 (Mac and Windows): a controller's right stick now turns the camera directly, with no easing, like the mouse (the game's own C-stick camera eases in and out and ignores the first quarter of the stick). It aims in first person and with every item; clicking it goes into first person and back out; in the telescope and the Picto Box the left stick zooms. The camera, by mouse or stick, also no longer dips into the ground or under the water when tilted low: the game now keeps it clear as it does its own. The game's original right stick is an option under Controls (on Windows: F1, Controls, with the turn and aim speeds; the controller's inversion options invert it too).
Earlier: macos.3 made the app's windows native (no AppleScript), and macos.2 added Dolphin's .rvz, .gcz, .wia and .ciso images, unpacked once into a plain image in the app's data folder.
You supply the game. The downloads contain the recompiled game code and the runtime, but no disc image, game files, textures, audio or saves. At the first launch the app asks for your own disc image of The Wind Waker, USA (GZLE01), revision 0 (.iso, .gcm, .rvz, .gcz, .wia or .ciso), checks it, and prepares what it needs from it. Other regions and revisions are refused.
Requirements
- Mac: an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer) on macOS 15 or later
- Windows: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), a Direct3D 12 GPU, and a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell, AMD Zen or newer)
- Your own legally obtained GZLE01 revision 0 disc image
Install
Mac

- Choose your disc image when asked.
Windows
- Download
WindWakerRecomp-0.1.1-windows-x64.zip(on the macos.4 release) and unpack the whole folder anywhere. - Run

.rvzis unpacked once (a few seconds) to an ISO in%APPDATA%\BlueWake; later launches start the game straight away. To use another image: F1, Sound and files, Choose another disc image.
Controller (Mac and Windows): the right stick turns the camera and aims, its click is first person, the left stick zooms the telescope and the Picto Box, the left bumper jumps and a click of the left stick sprints.
Keyboard: WASD moves, TFGH turns the camera, J/K/U/I are A/B/X/Y, E/R/Q are L/R/Z, Return is Start. Click the game to steer the camera with the mouse; Esc or F1 opens the options (Smooth Motion 60/120, aspect, resolution, texture packs, Better Wind Waker). On the Mac, F5 / F9 save and load a state. On Windows, Space jumps, Shift sprints, F11 or Alt+Enter is fullscreen, F10 toggles Smooth Motion and F9 the frame rate. Saves and settings live in ~/Library/Application Support/Wind Waker Recomp on the Mac and %APPDATA%\BlueWake on Windows.

Known issues
- Lava around Dragon Roost renders as flat orange instead of its bright pattern (Mac).
- The busiest scenes can dip below 120 at 120 Hz Smooth Motion; 60 is steadier. On Windows, 120 is used only on a display of 100 Hz or more (60 otherwise), and 120 on a 120 Hz display has not been measured on Windows yet.
- The first minutes of a new install (and the first launch of macos.5) hitch while rendering pipelines compile.
- Save states are for the version that made them; another version may refuse them. Keep saving in the game as well.
- Climbing (Mac): only near-vertical walls, as for ivy; slanted rock stays unclimbable.
- 60 Hz gameplay (Windows, experimental): dialogue, cutscenes and transitions keep their original timing.
- Windows was checked on one PC (Core i9-13900KF, RTX 5090): Smooth Motion 60 FPS shown with the game at its full 30 while running on Outset and turning the camera with the right stick, 60 Hz gameplay at 59-60. The right stick was checked with scripted stick input, at the Mac's measured rates (12.01 degrees a frame at full tilt, 3.41 at half, 6.0 when aiming; first person in and out); a physical controller, AMD GPUs and CPUs and slower PCs have not been tried on Windows yet.
BUILD.json (Mac) and BuilderProvenance.json (Windows) record the exact source revisions and checksums; the zips' SHA-256 are in the .sha256 files (the Windows ones on the macos.4 release). The Windows app was built from windows-release at 432225a (main's 887c26d merged); WindWakerRecomp-0.1.0-windows-source.zip is that branch at 5ca26dd (432225a plus docs).

Wind Waker Recomp 0.1.0 for macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows (x64) — macos.4
Wind Waker Recomp for Apple Silicon Macs and Windows PCs: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker statically recompiled to run natively, with Metal (Mac) and Direct3D 12 (Windows) rendering, Smooth Motion (60 or 120 frames a second from the game's 30), widescreen, controller, keyboard and mouse support, and Better Wind Waker's settings.

- The first minutes of a new install hitch while rendering pipelines compile.
BUILD.json (Mac) and BuilderProvenance.json (Windows) record the exact source revisions and checksums; the zips' SHA-256 are in the .sha256 files. The Windows app was built from windows-release at 432225a (main's 887c26d merged); WindWakerRecomp-0.1.0-windows-source.zip is that branch at 5ca26dd (432225a plus docs).

Wind Waker Recomp 0.1.0 for macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows (x64) — macos.3
Wind Waker Recomp for Apple Silicon Macs and Windows PCs: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker statically recompiled to run natively, with Metal (Mac) and Direct3D 12 (Windows) rendering, Smooth Motion (60 or 120 frames a second from the game's 30), widescreen, controller, keyboard and mouse support, and Better Wind Waker's settings.
New: Windows x64. WindWakerRecomp-0.1.0-windows-x64.zip is the same game for Windows 10 and 11: unpack it, run BlueWake.exe and choose your disc image. Smooth Motion is on at 60 FPS by default (F10 turns it off and on; the settings choose 120 on a display of 100 Hz or more), and an experimental 60 Hz gameplay mode runs the game itself at 60 on a fast CPU.
New in macos.3: the app's own windows are native. Choosing the disc image, error messages and a progress window for unpacking and preparing it are now built into the app instead of going through AppleScript, so the first launch works the same on any Mac.
macos.2 added compressed disc images: Dolphin's .rvz, .gcz, .wia and .ciso are unpacked once (about a minute) into a plain image in the app's data folder.
