QF Solver 0.2.8

This release consolidates the bounded, evidence-led public surface for structural FEM and dynamics.

Highlights

  • Qualified bounded mixed serial TET4/WEDGE6/HEX8 static, modal, translational-MPC and multi-material workflows.
  • Experimental bounded mixed Newmark and harmonic linear workflows within their documented serial damping, loading, timestep and frequency scopes.
  • Experimental bounded .inp subset, family-aware mixed-HDF5 storage, frictionless penalty contact and HEX8-SRI capability records.
  • Public capability, V&V/maturity, installation and limitations documentation.

Verification

  • Element-analysis registry: 32 QUALIFIED_BOUNDED, 14 EXPERIMENTAL, 0 NOT_QUALIFIED, 46 records.
  • The release candidate passed the documented full-suite, packaging, clean-install, documentation and CI gates.

Limitations

  • Mixed distributed PETSc/MPI runtime remains NOT_VALIDATED; the latest campaign failed force-balance and three-rank/partition-consistency gates.
  • No general distributed mixed, production-HPC, universal scalability or general nonlinear-production claim.
  • Geometric nonlinear work remains RESEARCH_ONLY; PYRAMID5 remains INTERNAL/RESEARCH_ONLY; MITC4 modal remains EXPERIMENTAL.
  • .inp, mixed-HDF5, frictionless-contact and HEX8-SRI capabilities remain bounded to their documented scopes.

QF Solver 0.2.7

QF Solver 0.2.7 is a major consolidation release focused on qualification, scalability, solver robustness, and reproducible verification.

Highlights

  • Extended qualification coverage for TET4, TET10, HEX8 and HEX20
  • Added and consolidated linear buckling analysis
  • Added an initial frictionless node-to-triangle contact implementation
  • Improved WEDGE6 support, including bounded modal qualification
  • Strengthened J2 small-strain plasticity workflows
  • Improved static, modal, harmonic and transient analysis routes
  • Extended PETSc/MPI distributed solving
  • Demonstrated large-scale runs up to approximately 10.1 million DOFs
  • Added stronger qualification matrices, evidence packs and reproducibility records
  • Improved solver diagnostics, determinism checks and failure reporting
  • Expanded automated verification and regression coverage

Large-scale solving

The 0.2.7 validation campaign includes distributed PETSc/MPI runs at approximately:

  • 1.0M DOFs
  • 3.0M DOFs
  • 5.0M DOFs
  • 10.1M DOFs

These results demonstrate the current distributed linear-solving capability of QF Solver under the documented configurations.

They should not be interpreted as universal performance or scalability claims across all element types, nonlinear workflows, hardware configurations or mixed meshes.

Qualification

The release introduces a more explicit capability classification:

  • QUALIFIED_BOUNDED
  • EXPERIMENTAL
  • NOT_QUALIFIED

Qualification is intentionally limited to the combinations for which sufficient numerical evidence is available.

Key solid-element routes based on TET4, TET10, HEX8 and HEX20 now have bounded qualification coverage.

Some capabilities remain experimental, including parts of the shell, WEDGE6 static, contact and mixed-element workflows.

Verification and validation

0.2.7 significantly expands the verification infrastructure with:

  • numerical baselines
  • regression tests
  • deterministic replay checks
  • residual, energy and equilibrium checks
  • external solver correlations where applicable
  • machine-readable qualification records
  • reproducible evidence linked to release commits

The objective is to clearly distinguish between a feature being implemented, tested and actually qualified.

Current limitations

The following areas remain outside the fully qualified scope of this release:

  • general frictional contact
  • production-grade finite sliding
  • large-strain plasticity
  • general nonlinear HPC scaling
  • mixed TET/WEDGE/HEX production workflows
  • WEDGE15 and PYRAMID5
  • complete shell qualification
  • GPU solving

These limitations are documented intentionally and will guide future releases.

Compatibility

QF Solver 0.2.7 remains focused on Python-based structural finite-element analysis while progressively extending its PETSc/MPI backend for larger models.

Users upgrading from earlier 0.2.x releases should consult the changelog and qualification documentation before relying on newly introduced analysis routes.

Full changelog and qualification evidence are available in the repository documentation.
