fix gcc build.
refactor existing tests a bit, free up memory.
indentation normalization, copyright update.
use the at_deprecated feature that was built for this purpose. remove final external dependency on a_free in the code.

There is at least one faction with this flag in the data, and the recent removal of the flag from the code causes an assert in save.c to trigger. I have removed the assert.
Additionally, lots of test-only changes, retro-fitting tests for existing code.
