freeze
- a new rack unit: hold a moment of the sound open. press HOLD and whatever is playing right then keeps playing, for as long as you like: a chord becomes a pad, a crash becomes a wash.
- shift moves what's held by up to two octaves, spread smears it sideways into texture, blur decides how quickly it can change, mix blends it with what's going through.
- it only adds delay while it's in use, and the host is told about it.
sound dna
- breed new sounds from the ones you have. capture two sounds in orbit's corners, then press BREED: six children, each taking whole parts — the oscillators, the filter, the envelopes, the effects — from one parent or the other.
- gentle, mixed or wild decides how far they're allowed to wander.
- click a child to hear it, right-click it to breed six more from that one. undo puts the sound back, so nothing is lost by trying.
- with nothing captured, it crosses the sound you're on with a factory one.
grains
- the sampler can read a recording as a cloud instead of one playhead: a second of sound holds for as long as you hold the key.
- position is where the grains come from — drag it on the display — spray scatters them, size and rate set how long each one lasts and how often they come, pitch spreads them, reverse turns some of them round and drift walks the position on by itself.
- add it from the widget library (SOUND > Grains).
resonator
- a new widget: strings, tubes, bells, plates and drum heads. send any source into it — its row in the sources mixer now says MAIN, ALT or RES — and what you send becomes the hit.
- a click of noise becomes a plucked string; a chopped break becomes a gamelan. it rings on after the envelope has closed, at the note you play.
- tune, structure, bright, decay, strike and mix: structure pulls the partials off the whole numbers (a string becomes a bell), strike is where it's hit, decay runs from 50 ms to 20 seconds.
- tune, brightness, decay and mix can all be modulated, and it can come out on either bus.
resample
- the sound can play itself into the sampler: in the sampler's menu, record this sound into the sampler (1, 2, 4 or 8 seconds), or record it and cut it into slices to go straight to chop lab.
- it's recorded offline in a moment, so nothing you're playing is interrupted, and it comes back in tune with the key you last played.
- the sources stay on afterwards: switch them off to hear only the recording.
Hypernova 0.13.0
Download Hypernova-0.13.0.dmg, open it and double-click Install Hypernova. It installs over any older version and keeps your saved sounds. Signed and notarized by Apple. Apple Silicon + Intel, macOS 10.13 and later.
chop lab
- cut a sample into slices and play them from the keyboard. press CHOP in the sampler: on the hits, or into 4, 8, 16 or 32 equal slices.
- each key from the root up plays its own slice, at the sample's own speed, so a break comes back as it was cut.
- letting go of a key lets the slice play out. HOLD stops it with the key instead.
- the cuts are drawn on the waveform with the key each one plays from: drag a cut to move it, alt-click to add one, double-click to take one out.
- the slices are saved with the sound and travel with your presets.
(Orbit, the two buses and the speaker unit arrived in 0.11.0 and 0.12.0 — see those releases.)
Hypernova 0.12.0
Download Hypernova-0.12.0.dmg, open it and double-click Install Hypernova. It installs over any older version and keeps your saved sounds. Signed and notarized by Apple. Apple Silicon + Intel, macOS 10.13 and later.
orbit: morph between sounds
- capture four sounds into the corners of a square and drag the point between them. everything continuous blends; a wavetable, a filter type or a switch takes the nearest corner's. two corners morph along a line, three share the square.
- a corner takes the sound as it is, the blend you are hearing, or any factory sound: right-click it.
- the point can travel on its own: a circle, a figure of eight, a slow drift or a bounce, free-running or in time with the host.
- morph x and morph y are modulation destinations, so an lfo, an envelope, the follower or a macro can move it, and the host can automate it.
- keep blend writes what you are hearing into the knobs and switches orbit off. while it's live, every knob shows a small mark where the morph has taken it.
- your macros and the machine settings stay where you put them: they aren't part of the morph.
- add it from the widget library (MODULATION > Orbit). the captured sounds travel with the sound, with exported presets, and across an a/b switch.
Hypernova 0.11.0
Download Hypernova-0.11.0.dmg, open it and double-click Install Hypernova. It installs over any older version and keeps your saved sounds. Signed and notarized by Apple. Apple Silicon + Intel, macOS 10.13 and later.
fixes
- the add-effect menu no longer crashes. in 0.10.0, opening + ADD in the rack could take the host down with it (the menu read past the end of its own list once crush was added). fixed, and the list can't fall out of step with the effects again.
- the effects are there when you open it: the deck along the bottom starts on the rack instead of hiding it behind a tab, and it has the room a unit needs.
two buses
- every source picks a bus: main or alt, on its row in the sources mixer. the two run side by side and meet at the output.
- every effect sits on one of them: right-click a unit and move it. its badge says which bus it's on and where it sits in that bus's chain, and the patch leads split into two lanes.
- so a sub can stay clean while the pad goes through the reverb, or one sound can run through two different chains at once.
- the alt bus costs nothing until something plays into it, and about 1.15x one bus when it does. it's saved with the sound.
speaker
- speaker: a new rack unit that plays your sound through a phone, a laptop, a car, a boombox or a club rig. hear what survives before you send the track anywhere.
- grit drives the speaker harder, mix blends it against the untouched sound, and the display draws the speaker's response over the sound going through it. the mix can be modulated.
Hypernova 0.10.0
Download Hypernova-0.10.0.dmg, open it and double-click Install Hypernova. It installs over any older version and keeps your saved sounds. Signed and notarized by Apple. Apple Silicon + Intel, macOS 10.13 and later.
eight oscillators
- up to eight wavetable oscillators in one sound. press + OSC (or drag add oscillator in from the library) and osc c to h join a and b, each with its own table, warp, unison, detune, blend, width, level, pan, pitch and filter switch.
- sources: every sound source in one mixer. on light, level, pan, filter routing and solo for each oscillator, the sub, the noise and the sampler. click a name to open its panel.
- unison width now lives on each oscillator.
effects rack
- every effect is its own module, with all its controls and a live 3D display (spectrum waterfalls, the delay's echoes, the reverb's tail, the gate's pattern, the stereo field). drag a module by its name to move it along the chain.
- each unit wears its own colour, shows where it sits in the chain, and patch leads run between them.
- right-click a unit: switch it off, move it earlier or later, reset its controls, replace it with another effect, or take it out.
- MIX on the output: how much of the whole rack you hear against the sound going into it, so the effects can sit alongside the dry sound. it can be modulated like everything else.
- + ADD puts an effect in the rack, the x takes it out. the rack scrolls when it's squeezed: pull it by its background, flick it, and its ends give a little.
- crush: a new unit. bit depth and sample rate, mixed against the clean sound: early-sampler grit, drill and donk edge, lo-fi keys. both its bits and its mix can be modulated.
- eq: five bands (low cut, low shelf, two bells, high shelf). drag the points on its curve.
- every effect control can be modulated: drag an lfo, envelope or macro chip onto it.
knobs
- drag the modulation ring to set how much an lfo or envelope sends; right-click a knob for each source's depth. double-click the ring to clear it.
- right-click a knob and choose type a value. shift-drag for fine moves.
mpe
- play it from an mpe controller (push, osmose, linnstrument, seaboard): switch mpe on in the play page and every note arrives on its own channel, so a bend, a press or a slide belongs to that note alone.
- bend sets how far a note's own bend reaches (48 semitones by default, what mpe controllers send).
- pressure and slide are modulation sources: drag them onto any knob. with mpe off they still work from ordinary aftertouch and cc 74.
more movement
- lfo 3 and lfo 4: add them from the widget library. same shapes, sync, fade in and retrigger as the first two, and they can be dragged onto any knob.
- draw your own lfo shape: pick drawn, then drag the points. click to add one, double-click one to remove it, hold shift to snap to the grid. saved with the sound and undoable.
- once: any lfo can play its shape one pass per note and hold the end, so a shape you draw becomes an envelope.
- shape any modulation: right-click a row in the mod matrix for the curve it goes through (linear, exponential, logarithmic, s-curve, 4/8/16 steps) and how much it's smoothed. a small badge on the row shows when it isn't plain.
- follower: a new widget that follows how loud the synth is, with attack, release and sensitivity. drag it onto any knob: duck the sound with itself, open a filter as you play harder, push an effect on the loud parts.
layouts that travel
- keep this layout with the sound: in the workspace menu. the sound then opens with the arrangement you made it in, and carries it into exported presets.
compare and start fresh
- a / b in the header: click b to try changes on a copy, a to hear the original. right-click it to copy one over the other. presets load into the slot you're on, and undo works across a switch.
- init is in the new-sound menu (the dice), with roll, nudge and mutate.
feel
- editing the layout no longer lags. dragging a panel or a gap between panels only redraws what moves, so it keeps up with the mouse. resizing the window is smooth too.
- panels, dragged widgets and rack modules move on springs: they start from where they are, keep the speed you let go at, and can be grabbed mid-move. reduce motion in macos settings turns this off.
- buttons and switches show they're pressed the moment you press.
- panels for switched-off sources fade back, so what's playing stands out.
- tidier layout mode: titles never run into their buttons, library cards don't overlap, each widget has its own icon.
- a clearer mod monitor, loudness meter (with a scale and a 20 s history), low end view and scope.
smaller things
- the 3d views fit their panels instead of running off the edges, and a panel is never squeezed below the size its controls need.
- knob modulation rings sit inside the knob, clear of the label.
- the header's icons are all the same size.
look
- a new mark: a lit core with an orbit ring. the wordmark is the same.
- panels have a lit top edge, a soft shadow and a fine grain.
Hypernova 0.9.0
Download Hypernova-0.9.0.dmg, open it and double-click Install Hypernova. It installs over any older version and keeps your saved sounds. Signed and notarized by Apple. Apple Silicon + Intel, macOS 10.13 and later.
low end
- a clean sub under any effects. switch on low end and everything below the split (40 to 300 Hz, drag the line on its spectrum) skips the effects, so you can distort, chorus and reverb the top of a bass while the sub stays solid and centred.
- sub level, warmth and mono for the low band on its own.
- duck: a tempo-synced sidechain-style pump on just the sub, at 1/4, 1/8, 1/2, a bar or 1/16.
- phone check: hear the mix through a phone speaker. it's monitoring only, never part of the sound, never saved.
- no added latency, and switching it on while a note plays doesn't click.
donks
- ten new donk basses in a new donk & bounce category: scouse, bamboo, hard house, bounce, rubber, gont, donk + sub, hardbass, pipe and deep house. built the proper way (a two-operator fm "bonk" with a quick pitch blip), with BONK, TONE, DIRT and SPACE on the macros.
- the old donk bass is gone from the browser.
fx chain
- scrolls when it's squeezed into a narrow spot, instead of shrinking the chips. swipe or scroll sideways; drag an effect to the edge and the row scrolls with you.
Hypernova 0.8.0
Download Hypernova-0.8.0.dmg, open it and double-click Install Hypernova. It installs over any older version and keeps your saved sounds. Signed and notarized by Apple. Apple Silicon + Intel, macOS 10.13 and later.
the fx chain
- put the effects in any order. the new fx chain shows all eleven in the order the sound goes through them. drag one somewhere else and the rest slide aside. reverb into distortion, delay before the chorus, the filter last: whatever you like.
- no clicks. change the order while a note is playing and it dips for a moment instead of popping.
- lights and names. click an effect's light to switch it off. click its name to jump to its controls. effects that are on but not doing anything are dimmed, so you can see what's actually shaping the sound.
- effect chains. save the order and every effect setting as a chain and use it on any other sound (CHAINS button). reset the order from the same menu.
- the order is saved with your sounds and sessions, and undo works on it. factory sounds keep the standard order, so they sound exactly as before.
- it's in the effects workspace, and a tab next to the effects everywhere else.
Hypernova 0.7.0
Download Hypernova-0.7.0.dmg, open it and double-click Install Hypernova. It installs over any older version and keeps your saved sounds. Signed and notarized by Apple. Apple Silicon + Intel, macOS 10.13 and later.
a sampler
- drop a recording anywhere on hypernova and it plays in the new sampler, straight away: the silence at the start is trimmed and the root note is detected, so it's in tune from the first key.
- waveform editor: drag the start and end flags, drag the loop brackets, watch the playhead. double-click a flag to reset it.
- loop, ping-pong or one-shot, with a crossfaded loop seam so it doesn't click. reverse too.
- key tracking on for instruments, off for drums and one-shots. semitone and fine tuning, its own envelope, level and pan, and a switch to send it through the filter.
- layers with everything else: the oscillators, sub, noise, filter, modulation and effects all still apply. glide, pitch drop and bend move the sample too.
- sounds carry their sample. save or export a sound that uses the sampler and the audio goes with it, so friends never get a missing file.
- WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3, M4A, CAF and OGG, up to a minute.
sampling workspace
- a new built-in layout with the sampler up top and the filter, envelopes, pitch and effects around it.
Hypernova 0.6.0
Download Hypernova-0.6.0.dmg, open it and double-click Install Hypernova. It installs over any older version and keeps your saved sounds. Signed and notarized by Apple. Apple Silicon + Intel, macOS 10.13 and later.
arrange it your way
- every panel is a widget. grab one by its name and drop it anywhere: in the middle of another panel to make tabs, near an edge to split, along the window edge to run it the full width. a soft outline shows where it will land.
- no gaps, no overlaps. hide a panel and its neighbours close up; drag the gap between two panels to share the space differently.
- bigger panels show more. give an oscillator, the filter or the envelopes more room and their displays grow instead of everything just zooming.
- double-click a title to fill the window with it. right-click a panel to fold, hide, replace or duplicate it.
- layout mode (the tiles button) lets you pick up whole panels and opens the widget library.
- undo and redo for every layout change. hiding a panel never changes the sound.
new widgets
- scope that locks to the note you play, so the waveform stands still. click to freeze.
- loudness meter: short-term, momentary and integrated LUFS, peaks, and a 20 second history with the -14 line.
- xy pad: two macros on one pad.
- mod monitor: every modulation source that's doing something, live, with what it moves. drag its chips onto knobs.
- macros: big macro knobs, rename them in place, see what each one moves.
- pinboard: right-click any knob, pin to pinboard, and build a panel of the controls you use most.
workspaces
- sound design (the classic layout), effects and analysis built in; save, rename, duplicate and delete your own. hypernova opens on the last one you used.
48 new sounds
- club studies: uk garage, dub and dancehall, house bass and stabs, baile funk, club percussion and club experimental, with macros set up for each.
tidier
- the randomise strip above the effects and the separate stereo view are gone (old sessions still load exactly as before).
Hypernova 0.5.1
Download Hypernova-0.5.1.dmg, open it and double-click Install Hypernova. It installs over any older version and keeps your saved sounds. Signed and notarized by Apple. Apple Silicon + Intel, macOS 10.13 and later.
fixed in 0.5.1
- the play page was empty. the arpeggiator, chords, tuning, unison width and cross mod are back.
- menus. every pop-up menu now uses hypernova's own look instead of the default grey one.
- preset browser. readable in light themes (it was black text on a dark panel).
- right-click a knob opens its modulation menu again.
- theme switching no longer leaves the old colours in the wavetable views.
- expanded sound space is solid and covers the panels properly.
- clipped labels, the gate pattern box, and near-black keys in dark themes.
lighter on the cpu
- an open editor with nothing playing: from about 11-18% of a core down to about 2%.
- while playing, the 3D views draw roughly half as much per frame and run at 20 fps.
more 3d
- machined encoder knobs (default in paper), panels that lift off the page, switches that press in, and keys that go down when played.
- the 3D views sway and lean in with the sound, show neighbouring frames and a floor reflection; the orbit view has a comet head; knobs leave a light trail as you turn them.
- the installer, disk image and app icon now match the paper look.
