Discussion

Embedded Erlang website proposal

Frank needs to send out an update to the board. Peer received response from the board that the working group needs to vote to support the proposals. We discussed the voting that is listed in the bi laws.

A vote was held on the proposal for developing a marketing site to promote the working group.

In Favor: Frank Peer Justin João Hideki

Frank opened discussion about a new proposal regarding distribution of pre compiled binaries of native code through hex. The example is for ports and nifs with c and c++ code requiring complicated build environment setups cause frustration for developers. The idea has the support of the tools and packaging working group.

Peer discussed a proposal for speeding up the boot time for Erlang VM. Through discussion with the Erlang core, Peer has discovered that a majority of the start up time is used with loading lots of beam files at boot.

We discussed who is available to fulfill the engineering that would be required to perform the work on the two new proposals.

Discussion

We discussed the initial goals of for the working group:

  • Create marketing website that show cases companies using embedded Erlang, GRiSP, and Nerves.
  • Find and sponsor projects that benefit embedded and the whole Erlang ecosystem. Examples:

    • OTP SuperCarrier feature, but this has already been implemented
  • Ask for budget from the EEF

We spoke more about the embedded systems marketing site:

  • Talk with marketing WG for help creating it
  • Add information about memory, CPU, and power budgets needed to run embedded Erlang
  • Where do we put the website? Is it it's own site or is it under the foundation? Unresolved.

We spoke about the time and frequency of the call:

  • Opinion is that this time is good for those who attended
  • Hideki will likely miss the Nov 4th call
