@eszter007 eszter007 released this 23 Oct 19:47

Fonts for Matcha Reader 2.0.0-rc-2 and later.

1. Download the zip you need

You read Download
Japanese japanese-fonts.zip
Chinese (simplified) chinese-fonts-simplified.zip
Chinese (traditional) or Cantonese chinese-fonts-traditional.zip
Optional: Noto Sans for Latin text, goes well with the Chinese Sans fonts noto-sans-font.zip

Chinese books need one of the Chinese fonts. Japanese books work without a font from here, but look nicer with one.

2. Unzip it

You get a folder called fonts. Leave everything inside it exactly as it is.

3. Copy the fonts folder to the SD card

Put the card in your computer and drag the whole fonts folder onto the card itself, not into another folder. If the card already has a fonts folder, say yes when your computer asks to merge.

When you're done, the card should look like this (here with the Japanese fonts):

SD card
└── fonts
    ├── NotoSansJP
    │ ├── NotoSansJP_12.cpfont
    │ ├── NotoSansJP_14.cpfont
    │ ├── NotoSansJP_16.cpfont
    │ └── NotoSansJP_18.cpfont
    └── NotoSerifJP
        ├── NotoSerifJP_12.cpfont
        ├── NotoSerifJP_14.cpfont
        ├── NotoSerifJP_16.cpfont
        └── NotoSerifJP_18.cpfont

The Chinese zips add NotoSansSC and NotoSerifSC (or NotoSansTC and NotoSerifTC) next to these, and noto-sans-font.zip adds NotoSans.

It won't work if the font files sit loose in fonts, or if there's an extra folder in between, e.g. fonts/japanese-fonts/NotoSansJP.

4. Choose the font on the device

Put the card back, open Settings → Reader → Text Settings and pick the font.

You don't need to copy the README.txt from the zip. The fonts are under the SIL Open Font License.

Dictionaries 2.0

@eszter007 eszter007 released this 23 Oct 19:47

Dictionaries for Matcha Reader 2.0.0-rc-2 and later.

1. Download the zip you need

You read Download
Japanese japanese-dictionaries.zip
Chinese, shown in simplified characters dictionaries-zh-simplified.zip
Chinese, shown in traditional characters dictionaries-zh-traditional.zip
Cantonese dictionaries-yue.zip

For Chinese, take only one of the two. Both look up words in simplified and traditional books; they only differ in which characters the entry shows you.

2. Unzip it

You get a folder called dictionaries. Leave everything inside it exactly as it is.

3. Copy the dictionaries folder to the SD card

Put the card in your computer and drag the whole dictionaries folder onto the card itself, not into another folder. If the card already has a dictionaries folder, say yes when your computer asks to merge.

When you're done, the card should look like this (here with Japanese and Chinese):

SD card
└── dictionaries
    ├── jp
    │ ├── names.dat
    │ ├── names.idx
    │ ├── names.spx
    │ ├── vocab.dat
    │ ├── vocab.idx
    │ └── vocab.spx
    └── zh
        ├── names.dat
        ├── names.idx
        ├── names.spx
        ├── names.title
        ├── vocab.dat
        ├── vocab.idx
        ├── vocab.spx
        └── vocab.title

Cantonese adds a yue folder next to these, with the same kind of files as zh.

It won't work if the files sit loose in dictionaries, or if there's an extra folder in between, e.g. dictionaries/jp/dict.

4. Read

Nothing to set up. Open a book and look up a word. The device picks the dictionary from the book's language.

Want a different dictionary?

Open Matcha Reader Tools in your browser. It turns a dictionary file into one the device can read, e.g. a newer JMdict or CC-CEDICT, or a dictionary for another language. Everything happens in your browser, nothing is uploaded. The tool tells you which folder to copy the result into.

For any other language you can also copy a StarDict dictionary straight onto the card, into its own folder under the language code: dictionaries/fr/larousse/ for a French one, for example. The dictionary guide has all the details.

What changed

The Japanese zip used to contain a dict folder whose files you had to move into dictionaries/jp yourself. It now unpacks the same way as the others. The words are the same, so if Japanese lookup already works for you, you don't need to download it again.

Each zip has a README.txt with its sources and licences. You don't need to copy it to the card.

Language packs 2.0.0-rc-2

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

Menu languages for Matcha Reader 2.0.0-rc-2. English, Japanese, Spanish, French and German
are built in. Every other language needs its file from here.

These files only work on 2.0.0-rc-2. After a firmware update, download your language again
from the release with the new version number.

1. Download the file for your language

Only that one file, e.g. RU.cplang for Русский. No unzipping needed.

2. Copy it to the SD card

Put the card in your computer. Open the hidden .crosspoint folder on the card (it is there
once the device has used the card) and make a folder called lang inside it, if there is none yet.
Copy the file into lang:

SD card
└── .crosspoint
    └── lang
        └── RU.cplang

Folders that start with a dot are hidden on most computers. On a Mac press Cmd+Shift+. in
Finder to show them; on Windows turn on View → Show → Hidden items.

3. Choose the language on the device

Put the card back and pick your language in Settings → System → Language.
