First public release of LumaCapture: a lightweight, portable screen recorder for older Windows PCs. No installer, accounts, telemetry or internet access.

Download

LumaCapture-v1.0.0-Windows-x64.zip (below, 67 MB)

  1. Extract the ZIP.
  2. Open the LumaCapture folder and double-click Launch-LumaCapture.bat.

Windows 10 (1809+) or 11, 64-bit. If SmartScreen appears, click More info → Run anyway (the app is not code-signed).

Features

  • Record a display, a window or a region, with the mouse cursor, cursor highlight and click rings.
  • System audio and/or microphone. The microphone has gain, EQ, noise gate, compressor, limiter and noise suppression.
  • Webcam overlay (rectangle, rounded or circle; border, crop, mirror). The webcam page has:
    • Auto adjust, presets and a before/after view;
    • anti-flicker (50/60 Hz) and a low-light setting;
    • green screen with a background image.
  • H.264 (x264) + AAC in crash-safe MKV, with optional MP4 conversion.
  • Pause/resume with audio and video kept in sync. Interrupted recordings can be recovered at the next start.
  • Global hotkeys, screenshots, text and image overlays, a tray icon, and a floating recording bar that is hidden from the recording.

Tested (on an i5-2400S + GeForce GT 730, Windows 10 22H2, Logitech C270)

  • 17 automated tests pass: recording state machine, audio/video sync across pause, MP4 conversion, crash recovery, webcam controls, and webcam start/stop without hangs.
  • Scripted GUI test from this exact ZIP, launched from a path with spaces:
    • 1080p30 recording with pause/resume;
    • duplicate Start/Stop presses ignored;
    • 0 dropped frames;
    • the file decodes cleanly;
    • webcam on/off without a freeze.

Not yet tested: window/region capture in the GUI, hotkeys used from other apps, microphone processing by ear, unplugging devices while recording, long recordings, other webcams. Details are in docs/TESTING.md.

Hardware limitations

  • Video is encoded on the CPU (x264); no hardware encoder is used. The CPU decides what is possible.
    • On an old quad-core i5, 1080p30 and 720p60 at "ultrafast" keep up.
    • 1080p60 and slower presets at 1080p do not.
    • Watch the Dropped frames value while recording.
  • PCs that overheat slow down during long recordings.
  • Webcams in dim rooms may stutter: the sensor exposes longer than one frame. Add light, or use Low light → Smooth motion plus Auto adjust.
  • Windows 10 draws a yellow border around a captured window. There is no echo cancellation: use headphones with a microphone.
