@ethanplusai ethanplusai released this 03 Oct 16:11

Astra Flash Orchestrator started with one job: let Astra plan and review while DeepSeek Flash handles the implementation loop.

I kept using it, then wanted to choose other models for different projects. Sometimes I wanted Opus to do the whole build. Sometimes I wanted Opus to plan and Flash to implement, with Codex available for browser checks and other tools. I also wanted to see what was happening and give feedback without stopping the conversation every time I had a design question.

That became Codex on Crack. This is the next iteration of the same project, now at ethanplusai/codex-on-crack. The old repository URL redirects here, and the history, stars, issues, and pull requests stay with it.

What is new

  • Plan and delegate using compatible models from your own configuration.
  • Run Opus 5.5 through the authenticated Claude Code client from a Codex workflow.
  • Let Opus direct a native worker while Codex mediates dispatch and tool requests.
  • Follow work across workspaces in an optional panel with phases, agents, and recorded usage.
  • Answer visual questions and leave feedback for the next agent checkpoint.
  • Capture registered activity and export an offline replay.

The host model still runs in Codex. External Claude sessions remain external; they do not replace the composer model or directly inherit Codex tools.

If you already use Astra Flash Orchestrator

Start with the upgrade guide before switching policies. Pulling a checkout is not a migration of an installed skill. Keep your original receipts and use only one orchestration policy for a task. Setup previews changes and supports undo.

The original Astra + Flash arrangement is still supported when its role and route are configured. The new name reflects the wider scope, not a requirement to stop using the original pairing.

Existing OpenCode users should follow the retained legacy instructions. This Codex plugin is not a replacement installer for that client.

Getting started

Follow Install Codex on Crack. You need Node.js 24.15+, a Codex client with plugin support, and your own model access. External Opus sessions also need the official Claude Code client installed and authenticated.

Once installed, start a fresh chat and ask it to help choose and configure your models. You can also request an arrangement directly:

Run subagents through Opus 5.5.

About the demo and usage

The README animation is an illustrated demo with synthetic data. It shows the workflow, not benchmark evidence. The original 98% usage result applied to a particular test; it is not a promise for every workload or model combination. Offloading work can preserve Codex allowance and still incur costs with another provider.

This is a preview release. The published candidate passed 325 current Node tests and 77 legacy Python tests. Those checks verify covered behavior, not a guarantee of better output or lower usage for every project.

Please report installation problems and useful build feedback, with private information removed. Quality of the finished work matters first.
