StorageInventory v1.0.1

A patch release that fixes one problem in v1.0.0: the Windows application could open as a blank, white window on
some systems.
Scanning, reports, safety checks, link handling and cancellation are unchanged.

What was wrong

v1.0.0 used the new (still experimental) Fluent theme of WPF, .NET's Windows UI framework, together with its Mica
window backdrop. On Windows 11 22H2 and later, that backdrop makes the window's own background transparent and leaves
Windows' compositor (the Desktop Window Manager) to draw the backdrop behind the window's content. StorageInventory
therefore drew no background of its own. On systems where the compositor did not fill that area (this depends on the
graphics hardware and driver), the window showed an unpainted white surface. In the dark theme all the text is white
as well, so the whole window looked blank, even though the program, its controls and its scanner were all working.

The fix

v1.0.1 turns the Mica backdrop off, using WPF's documented switch for exactly this, so the window paints its own solid
light or dark background. That is the same way v1.0.0 already drew itself on Windows 10. The look is otherwise
unchanged: on Windows 11 there is no faint wallpaper tint behind the window any more, and text uses ClearType again.

  • Windows 10 or 11, x64.
  • One self-contained, single-file executable. No installer, no .NET installation and no administrator rights needed.
  • Check the download with Get-FileHash .\StorageInventory.exe -Algorithm SHA256.
  • Not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen may warn the first time you run it. If the checksum matches, choose
    More info → Run anyway.
  • A clean publish from this release's source reproduces the same SHA-256 (release.md).
  • If you have v1.0.0, just replace the file. Reports written by v1.0.0 stay valid.

Tests for this release

All of these ran on GitHub-hosted Windows Server 2025 x64 runners (virtual display adapter, no graphics hardware), and
were run again on the tagged commit, on the exact file attached here, before it was uploaded:

  • Unit tests 55 pass / 0 fail / 0 skip; integration tests 87 / 0 / 7 (skips: benchmark trees and 8.3 names the runner
lacks). A new test checks that the window paints an opaque background of its own; it fails on v1.0.0's code.
  • PowerShell reference suite: 108 pass / 0 fail / 3 skip on Windows PowerShell 5.1 and on PowerShell 7.6.6.
  • Release smoke test (exe copied outside the repository, no DOTNET_ROOT): 46/46 pass. That covers a complete scan,
a 250,000-file scan cancelled with no report file left open, the report folder opening, a clean exit, and the setup
    and results screens checked visually.
  • New visual startup gate: 50/50 pass on a cold start in the light and the dark theme, 25/25 on a warm relaunch. The
same gate reports 10 failures for the v1.0.0 executable.
  • The fix was also seen painting its own opaque background on Windows Server 2022 x64 and Windows 11 25H2 ARM64.
  • Not tested: physical graphics hardware. The blank window depends on it, so it could not be reproduced on the
test machines; the tests show that v1.0.1 no longer depends on the compositor to fill its background.

StorageInventory v1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@eunni-dotcom eunni-dotcom released this 30 Sep 07:34

Warning

⚠️ Superseded by v1.0.1.
Some systems open this build as a blank/white window. Please use v1.0.1. This release and its executable are kept
unchanged as a historical record; the SHA-256 below still describes this v1.0.0 file.

StorageInventory v1.0.0

The first public release of StorageInventory: a read-only storage inventory for Windows. Point it at a drive or
folder, and it writes a complete, sortable record of every file and folder, with sizes, dates and attributes, to CSV
reports you can keep. It never opens, changes, moves or deletes your files.

Highlights

  • Native Windows app with a pre-flight safety check, live progress, safe cancellation and a results screen:
largest folders, largest files, file types and errors.
  • Three CSV reports per scan (Files, Folders, ScanErrors) plus an optional Excel workbook that needs no Excel
installation. Every report is a new, uniquely named file; nothing is ever overwritten.
  • Honest outcomes: Complete, Finished but incomplete (some folders couldn't be read, so totals are lower
bounds), Cancelled or Failed. A partial scan never looks complete.
  • Link-safe: junctions, symbolic links, mount points and cloud placeholders are listed and never followed.
  • No administrator rights, no installation, no network activity of its own, no telemetry.
  • One self-contained executable: no .NET installation needed.

Windows 10 or 11, x64. Check the download with:

Get-FileHash .\StorageInventory.exe -Algorithm SHA256

Not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen may warn the first time you run it. If the checksum matches, choose
More info → Run anyway. The executable can also be rebuilt from this release's source; a clean publish reproduces
the same SHA-256 (see release.md).

How to use it

  1. Run StorageInventory.exe.
  2. Choose the folder or drive to scan, and a report folder outside it.
  3. When the pre-flight panel says READY TO SCAN, start the scan.
  4. Read the outcome, browse the tabs, and open the reports.

Good to know

  • Reports contain private information: file names, folder structure, sizes and timestamps. Review them before
sharing, and note that a report folder inside OneDrive (or another synced folder) will be uploaded by that service.
  • What is written: only the report files, in the report folder you chose (plus a temporary file during sorting,
removed afterwards). The single-file executable's .NET host also unpacks WPF's native libraries to
    %TEMP%\.net\StorageInventory\ on first run.
  • Known limitations:
    • A folder swapped for a link during a scan can still be followed in a very small window (read-only).
    • \\localhost\C$-style aliases are caught at run time rather than up front.
    • Hard links are counted per link, and sizes are file lengths rather than space on disk.
    • Mount points use the same code path as the tested junctions and symbolic links, but aren't created by the tests.
