AstroQuest v0.8.0 - Transparency Fixes and Crash Reports

Choose a tag to compare

@evertec82 evertec82 released this 12 Oct 00:45

Fixes bright grid lines and triangle seams on transparent effects, including the gargoyle light and menu borders. Retains the confirmed light correction and extends coverage handling to supported mixed-sample transparent passes while preserving color samples.

Includes the existing full-framerate option, higher resolutions, timing/performance improvements, and SteamVR support.

Install and play

  1. Extract the entire ZIP to a writable folder.
  2. Put your own decrypted game dump in games/<game-folder>/eboot.bin, or select its eboot.bin when prompted. No game files are included.
  3. Start your VR runtime, connect the headset and controller, and run Play Astro Bot VR.bat.
  4. Choose your resolution and framerate in the launcher.

When replacing an existing installation, preserve your games folder and pc-vr/user saves. Extract the package over the installation with the game closed.

Crash reporting

Abnormal emulator exits automatically create a ZIP in pc-vr/reports. You can also run Collect Crash Report.bat after a crash, before starting another run. Reports contain the process exit result, console output/errors, emulator logs, settings, build identification, and executable hash. Game files and saves are excluded; review local paths before sharing.

This adds diagnostic evidence for future reports; it does not claim a fix for the incomplete PSVR2 crash report.

Validation

The broader transparency correction was confirmed in the local headset test. The report collector was tested under Windows PowerShell, including exit-result/stderr capture in the archive and exclusion of games/saves. Other GPU/runtime combinations still need testing.

PC package versions are now numbered chronologically from v0.1.0. Historical release links remain unchanged.

AstroQuest v0.7.0 - Timer, Mirror and Frame Delivery Updates

Choose a tag to compare

Updates the fork to the latest AstroBot build installed and used locally. The bundled emulator matches that installed executable byte-for-byte.

Changes since the previous release:

  • Pipeline-cache repairs and bounded late-frame recovery adapted from elliotttate's fork.
  • More precise guest timer scheduling and reduced desktop mirror updates.
  • Retains full-framerate selection, higher resolution options, SteamVR compatibility and existing physics/timing fixes.

Update installation: close AstroQuest, then extract the ZIP into your existing installation. Launch Play AstroQuest.bat. Existing game files, settings, package tools, saves and shader caches are retained. The archive contains one BAT launcher; extra recovery/diagnostic BAT files are not included.

The source is updated to commit 3a75299 on main. Launcher regression checks pass.

AstroQuest v0.6.0 - Full Framerate and Higher Resolutions

Choose a tag to compare

Updated AstroQuest 0.20 PC VR build with a Full framerate option, two higher rendering resolutions and improved Windows presentation timing.

  • Full framerate (headset refresh) is the default in the FPS selector. Fixed FPS choices remain available. Set the headset refresh rate in SteamVR or Virtual Desktop.
  • Added 3960 x 4224 and 4320 x 4608 per-eye rendering choices. The initial resolution remains 3600 x 3840. The runtime may resample submitted images to its swapchain limits.
  • VR presentation uses a reusable high-resolution Windows timer, checks completed frames more frequently, and adjusts polling when the runtime refresh rate changes. This targets scheduling jitter; a gameplay reduction in judder has not yet been confirmed.
  • Retains the user-confirmed level 2-2 soccer-enemy crash fix for game 1.00, upstream 0.20 features, separate headset Vulkan queue, and SteamVR compatibility fixes. The soccer-enemy patch is not applied to game 1.04.

Simplified download: the ZIP includes only Play AstroQuest.bat as a batch launcher. Alternate launchers and diagnostic .bat files are omitted.

Validation: launcher tests and menu layout checks passed; SteamVR startup at 4320 x 4608 remained running for 45 seconds without a critical error. Higher settings do not guarantee a new frame on every refresh. The previously observed SteamVR disconnect/cleanup crash remains unverified as fixed.

Extract the complete AstroQuest-0.20-PC-VR-Windows-Updated.zip and run Play AstroQuest.bat. Supply your own CUSA12392 game dump (1.00 or 1.04). Back up your existing installation and saves before updating. No game files, saves, keys or personal logs are included.

Source: 4b9479a086328f777a76700ec9f041a5a3086f36. The executable matches the updated build installed for testing; the release packaging removes the additional batch shortcuts.

AstroQuest v0.5.0 - Soccer Enemy Fix and PC VR Performance

Choose a tag to compare

Fixes the level 2-2 soccer-enemy crash encountered above 60 FPS on game version 1.00. The fix has been confirmed in user testing.

The enemy's animation budgets now use the original console timing units, so higher frame rates no longer shorten the allowed animation time. Rendering and elapsed-time integration remain variable-rate; the game is not capped to 60 FPS by this fix. The animation-resource checks and assertion remain enabled.

Includes upstream AstroQuest 0.20 and the existing PC VR improvements:

  • A separate Vulkan headset queue where supported, with explicit synchronization to reduce contention with game rendering.
  • Faster recovery to full frame rate after a slowdown, retaining the existing backoff behavior.
  • SteamVR startup compatibility and runtime-aware idle-session handling.
  • A launcher with resolution, maximum FPS and field-of-view controls, plus frame-path diagnostics.

The soccer-enemy patch checks the expected executable bytes before applying and currently covers game 1.00 only. Game 1.04 remains supported by the emulator but does not receive this patch. To disable the patch for comparison, add env=SHADPS4_TITLE_SOCCER_TIMING=0 to pc-vr/settings.txt.

Validation: targeted patch checks against the actual game 1.00 executable, SteamVR startup, and user confirmation of the previously crashing level 2-2 encounter. This does not establish that every other crash is resolved; the previously observed SteamVR disconnect/cleanup issue remains unverified.

Download and extract AstroQuest-0.20-Soccer-Fix-PC-VR-Windows.zip, then launch Play AstroQuest.bat. Supply your own game dump. Back up your existing installation and saves before updating. No game files, saves or personal logs are included.

The executable is identical to the tested prerelease; packaging and release documentation were updated. Source: f54f39c3289efe786df38ca38dd812720888eae6.

AstroQuest v0.4.0 - PC VR Performance

Choose a tag to compare

AstroQuest 0.20 with the PC VR performance fixes from this fork, preserving compatible upstream changes.

Performance changes retained

  • Separate Vulkan queue for headset submission when supported, reducing contention with game rendering.
  • Explicit synchronization between rendering and headset copies.
  • Faster recovery toward full refresh: a 15-second retry gate with the existing headroom checks and repeated-failure backoff.
  • Resolution/FPS settings GUI, CPU/frame-delivery diagnostics and archived session logs.

Upstream 0.20 changes retained

  • Game version 1.04 support alongside 1.00.
  • Headset and controller improvements, including controller switching, touchpad gestures and snap turning.
  • Language selection, microphone gain and button-to-blow controls.
  • Improved audio-device handling.
  • World 2 moving-collision and lava-rendering fixes.
  • Upstream SteamVR startup and runtime-specific idle-session handling, replacing duplicate fork patches.

Using this release

Extract the entire ZIP into a new folder and open Play AstroQuest.bat or Play Astro Bot VR.bat. Both open the settings GUI and use the fork's performance launcher. Supply your own dumped CUSA12392 game, version 1.00 or 1.04. The public defaults are 3600x3840 per eye and a 72 FPS cap; set actual headset refresh separately. Select SteamVR or VDXR as the active OpenXR runtime before launching.

Run Full Refresh Diagnostic.bat bypasses adaptive half-rate pacing and the GUI FPS cap. Run Original Recovery.bat restores the 600-second recovery gate for comparison.

Validation and known issues

Release compilation, all 143 launcher checks, targeted game-version/headset/input checks, recovery simulation, and the two-queue synchronization test passed. The game stayed running through separate 45-second SteamVR and Virtual Desktop startup smoke tests. These checks do not validate headset gameplay, every scene, or native framerate under load.

Earlier sessions hit an assertion in the game's soccer-enemy logic at 72 FPS; this merge is not a confirmed fix. Use 120 Hz headset refresh with a 60 FPS game cap for a comparison at the original game rate. The previously observed SteamVR disconnect/session-cleanup crash is not verified as fixed.

The package contains generic configuration and licensed unpacking tools, with no game, saves, keys, account data or personal logs. Retain your prior installation until you have copied your saves locally.

AstroQuest v0.3.0 - Performance and SteamVR

Choose a tag to compare

This release improves PC VR frame delivery and adds SteamVR OpenXR startup compatibility, with a settings window for resolution and maximum framerate.

Performance improvements

  • Reduces contention between game rendering and headset frame submission by using a separate Vulkan queue when supported.
  • Synchronizes rendering and headset copies so frames are handed over safely without holding up the renderer unnecessarily.
  • Retries full-rate rendering after 15 seconds rather than waiting up to 10 minutes, allowing framerate to recover sooner after demanding scenes. Repeated unsuccessful attempts still use backoff.
  • Adds CPU and frame-delivery diagnostics and archives session logs to help investigate remaining slowdowns.

SteamVR improvements

  • Fixes the startup memory conflict that previously caused the game to crash before reaching VR.
  • Keeps idle SteamVR sessions running instead of unnecessarily restarting them when the headset is inactive or another application is visible.
  • Uses the selected OpenXR runtime, supporting both SteamVR and Virtual Desktop VDXR.

Launcher

Choose maximum per-eye resolution, maximum FPS and field of view before launching. Settings are saved between runs. The default is 3600x3840 per eye with a 72 FPS cap; headset refresh must be set separately.

Extract the full ZIP into a new folder and double-click Play AstroQuest.bat. Connect the headset and select your OpenXR runtime first. You must supply your own dumped CUSA12392 version 01.00 game. To measure native frame delivery, disable SteamVR motion smoothing or Virtual Desktop SSW.

The build has been confirmed working in user testing. These changes improve frame delivery and recovery but do not guarantee full native refresh in every scene.

Known limitation: exiting the game within steamvr crashes the emulator instead of a clean exit

The download includes fresh generic configuration, with no game, saves, keys, accounts or personal logs. Keep your existing installation until you have copied your saves locally.

AstroQuest v0.2.0 - PC VR recovery test: 15 seconds

Choose a tag to compare

Follow-up test lowering full-refresh recovery from 30 seconds to 15 seconds, based on the report that the 30-second test recovered much better than the original ten-minute gate.

This is a launcher-only change using the existing emulator support. The compiled emulator is identical to the previous release, so the recovery interval can be compared without a binary change. GPU headroom checks, settling periods and repeated-failure backoff remain; the next attempt can still take longer than 15 seconds.

Existing installation: download Run-Test.ps1 and replace the file of the same name beside Play AstroQuest.bat. Then launch normally.

Fresh installation: download and extract the complete ZIP, then run Play AstroQuest.bat. Select resolution and maximum framerate in the GUI. Keep the same headset refresh, SSW state, settings and scene for the comparison.

The 15-second governor simulation passed recovery and sustained-overload checks. Headset performance with this interval remains to be measured. No game files, personal saves, keys, account configuration or local logs are included.
