Release list
Excalibur View 0.6.15
A new version now says so in a box in the middle of the window, with what
is new in it. This carries 0.6.13 and 0.6.14 with it, so the Studio shows
the office's jobs as the office keeps its files.
UPDATES
When a new version is ready, a box in the middle of the window says which
one and what is new in it, laid out as it was written, with Restart now
and Later. It used to be a bar across the top with every word of the
notes run together on one line. Nothing restarts on its own, and the box
waits for a mouse button to be let go, so a markup being dragged is
finished first. Later, or Escape, leaves the new version to take over the
next time Excalibur View opens, and Help, Check for Updates brings the
box back.
While a new version is being fetched, a small card in the corner says so.
Check for Updates answers in a small box in the middle of the window too.
STUDIO
Projects another program sends through the API sit on shelves: Active
Jobs, Bids by year, Lost Bids by year and Past Jobs by year, a cancelled
job in its year's Cancelled. Each shelf folds away and says how many are
in it; the active jobs and the bids start open. A bid moves to Active
Jobs when it is won, to Lost Bids when it is lost, and a job to Past Jobs
when it is finished, without anybody moving it. Projects nobody placed
are under Other projects, and a server where nothing has a place shows
the list it always did.
Inside a project the drawings are in the folders they came from in the
job's own files, such as 01 Drawings or 10 SHOP DRAWINGS, and nothing
else from the share comes with them.
A drawing issued again replaces only the one of the same name in the same
folder, so a shop drawing for approval and the same sheet for fabrication
are kept as two drawings.
HELP MENU
The two commands for a desktop AI assistant are now Connect AI Assistant
and Test AI Assistant Connection. They work the same as before, and an
assistant that was already connected stays connected. The connection test
keeps its report in assistant-check.txt beside the program, and its log in
assistant-bridge.log.
FOR OTHER PROGRAMS
A program that keeps an office's jobs can now say where each one sits
(POST /projects with a place, or POST /projects/{id}/place) and which
folder each drawing came from (POST /sets with a folder). See Building on
Excalibur View, on the website or in docs/integrating.md.
The API only grows: a route or field a program uses is never renamed,
retyped or taken away, and every release is checked for it before it is
built.
The source and the releases are now at github.com/excaliburct. The old
addresses forward there, so copies already installed keep finding their
updates.
ExcaliburView.exe: the desktop app. Double-click it on each computer. It installs itself for that person, opens, and finds the office's server by itself.
ExcaliburView-Server.exe: the Office server. Double-click it once on the computer that should hold the company's drawings. Windows asks for permission once. After that it runs by itself, and keeps itself and every copy of Excalibur View in the office up to date.
ExcaliburView-mac.dmg: the Mac version. Open it and drag Excalibur View into Applications. It is the whole program, not a viewer — Apple Silicon and Intel in one download.
The first person to open Excalibur View after the server is up sets it up and gets a join code for everybody else.
Excalibur View 0.6.12
Typing on the sheet works: click and type, and the words stay where you put them.
TYPING ON THE SHEET
Pick Text Box and click where the words go, then type. The words go on the
sheet as you type them, in their own size, colour and weight, and the box
grows with them. Enter starts a new line. Drag out a box instead and the
words wrap inside it; the box gets taller as they run past the bottom.
Click anywhere else on the sheet, or press Esc, when you're done. You're
back to picking things up, so the box can be moved or sized straight away.
A box left with nothing typed in it goes away. Double-click the words to
change them.
The toolbar's font, size, colour, bold, italic and alignment change the
words while you're still typing them.
A callout is two clicks now, the thing it's about and where the words go,
and then you type. Its box grows away from what it points at, and the
leader stays on the middle of its side. The words of a Cloud+ grow the
same way. Typewriter words have nothing drawn round them, on the screen as
well as on paper.
FIXED
Words typed into a new text box could go nowhere. A quick click put the
box down and closed it in the same moment, so the typing landed on the
shortcuts instead. Clicking away to finish a box also put down another
empty one where you clicked.
Excalibur View 0.6.11
Move sheets around in Thumbnails and drop PDFs into a drawing, change a drawing's own words, reshape markups after they're down, Cloud+, your signature, and a Classic look.
MOVING SHEETS IN THUMBNAILS
Drag a sheet up or down the Thumbnails list and let go where it belongs. A
bar shows where it will land. Picked sheets move together: Ctrl-click a few,
then drag any one of them. Near the top or bottom of the list it scrolls to
follow.
Drag a PDF from File Explorer or the Finder onto the list and its sheets go into the
drawing where you let go. Anywhere else on the window, a dropped PDF still
opens in a tab of its own.
Right-click a sheet for the rest: Insert Pages from a File, Insert a Blank
Sheet, Move to the Top or the Bottom, Rotate Right or Left, and Delete.
All of it changes the drawing itself, and Undo puts it back, one step at a
time. Markups move with their sheets. Bookmarks, layers and everything else
in the file are left as they were.
A set locked so its sheets can't be changed, one that opens with a
password, and a drawing shared through the office server say so rather than
moving anything. For the office server's drawings, Save As makes a copy you
can rearrange.
EDITING THE DRAWING'S WORDS
Edit -> Edit Text outlines every paragraph on the sheet. Click one and
retype it where it is. The strip above it sets the size, colour, bold,
italic and alignment. Done or Ctrl+Enter writes it into the drawing, and
Esc or Cancel leaves it as it was.
The lines of a note are treated as one paragraph and wrap to the width the
note already had. The next numbered note stays a paragraph of its own.
The words keep the drawing's own font when it has every letter they need.
Many PDFs only carry the letters the drawing already used, so a new letter
sends the paragraph to the nearest standard font, and the status line says
which one and why.
Before the change is kept, the rest of the sheet is drawn again and has to
come out exactly as it was. If it doesn't, nothing is written. Undo puts
the words back.
Lettering that a CAD program drew as lines isn't text and can't be retyped.
For those, a white-filled box over the old words and a text box on top
does the job.
MARKUPS AFTER THEY'RE PLACED
Pick a markup and it shows handles. Drag a corner or a side to resize it,
drag a point to move just that point, and drag a callout's tip to aim its
leader somewhere else. Pictures and signatures keep their shape unless you
hold Shift.
Double-click a text box or a callout to retype it on the sheet.
Boxes, circles and clouds now stay the size they were drawn. Before, each
redraw could make them a little bigger.
Stamps, pictures and signatures that came in with a file keep their look
when you move or resize them.
A moved markup no longer leaves a faint copy behind where it was.
FILL, OUTLINE AND BLEND
Right-click a markup for its fill, outline, line weight and see-through,
with any colour you like. Multiply blends a fill into the drawing the way
a highlighter does, so the linework under it still shows. The pen chooser
has the same.
CLOUD+
Cloud+ is on the Markup menu and the text toolbar. Drag out the cloud,
click where the words go, and type. A leader runs from the cloud to the
words.
The cloud and its words move, copy and delete as one. Drag the words box
by itself to put it somewhere else and the leader follows. Double-click
the cloud to change the words. Other PDF programs see an ordinary cloud
and callout, grouped together.
YOUR SIGNATURE
Markup -> Signature. The first time, draw it with the mouse or a pen, or
load a photo or scan of it on paper and the paper is taken out. It is kept
on this computer, so after that it's one click. Initials work the same
way, and you can keep more than one.
A signature goes down as a stamp that blends into the drawing, so the
lines under it still show. Move and resize it like any other markup.
CLASSIC LOOK
View -> Classic Look turns the program grey, with raised buttons, sunken
boxes and lists, and a navy band across the window in front, the way office
computers looked in the late nineties. Everything works the same; only the
look changes. It is remembered for next time, and Edit -> Preferences has it
too.
FIXED
Pasting a box, circle, cloud, stamp or text box could leave a thin sliver
instead of the shape you copied. Pasted markups now keep their size, a
callout's leader comes with it, and a pasted Cloud+ is a new Cloud+ of its
own.
A save that only changed markups already in the file could leave it saying
it held fewer objects than it did. Excalibur View read past that, but
stricter PDF readers could lose part of the file. Saves now count every
object.
A long message at the bottom of the window is cut to fit instead of
running over the sheet name. Point at it to read all of it.
A set locked with an owner's password, the way most engineers send them,
read back scrambled after a save until it was opened again, and a second
save in the same sitting could spoil the markups it wrote. It stays
readable now.
If another seat moves a shared drawing's sheets while you have it open,
your next save says so instead of putting your markups on the wrong sheets.
ExcaliburView.exe: the desktop app. Double-click it on each computer. It installs itself for that person, opens, and finds the office's server by itself.

Excalibur View 0.6.10
Pick sheets in Thumbnails, then print just those or save them as a PDF.
PICKING SHEETS
In the Thumbnails panel, Ctrl-click (Cmd on a Mac) sheets to pick them,
Shift-click to pick a run, and Ctrl-Shift-click to add another run. A
plain click still goes to a sheet, and clears the picks. Picking doesn't
move the drawing, so you can keep looking at one sheet while you choose
others.
The line above the list says how many are picked, with Print, Save as PDF
and Clear beside it. Right-click a sheet for the same, or to pick every
sheet a search is showing.
PRINTING THEM
Print opens on the picked sheets. Ctrl+P does too.
SAVING THEM AS A PDF
Save as PDF writes the picked sheets, markups and all, into a new file
wherever you put it. The drawing you're in stays as it is and stays open.
THE DOCUMENT MENU
Rotate, Extract, Delete, Crop, Flatten and the other jobs that work on
chosen sheets open with the picked ones already filled in.
ExcaliburView.exe: the desktop app. Double-click it on each computer. It installs itself for that person, opens, and finds the office's server by itself.

Excalibur View 0.6.9
A steel model in 3D, measuring in it, and a Batch window that stays put.
A STEEL MODEL IN 3D
File -> Open Model (IFC)... now opens the model itself. Every part is on
screen in a moment, and the holes and copes are cut in while you look
around. Drag to turn it, right-drag to move it, scroll to zoom to the
pointer, or pick Iso, Top, Front, Back, Left or Right. Parallel takes the
perspective out for elevations and plans, and Turn spins it slowly for a
screen at a show.
Colour it by kind, profile, assembly, or by where each part's weight came
from, which shows any part the model didn't weigh in red. Hide a kind, cut
away everything above a height to look inside, and click any part for its
profile, mark, assembly, length and weight. Ctrl-click adds to the
selection, double-click goes to a part, Esc clears it.
The tonnage and the model work together: the 3D button on a row of By
profile or Every part lights those pieces up in the model.
MEASURING
Start measuring, then click two points. A point near a corner or an edge
catches on it. You get the distance, how far it runs across and up, and
each point's elevation, in feet and inches.
PICTURES
Save picture... writes the view as a PNG at twice its size on screen. With
the Transparent background it drops onto a web page or a slide as it is.
OPENING IFC FILES
On Windows, .ifc files get "Open in Excalibur View" on their right-click
menu and in Open with. Whatever opens them now stays the default. On the
Mac, Excalibur View shows under Open With for an IFC file.
FIXES
The Batch window, Combine included, no longer grows until it reaches both
edges of the screen.
ALSO, FROM 0.6.8
Tonnage straight from a steel model, a bookmark per file in a combined set,
plugin keys, and change notices for FabWire.
Excalibur View 0.6.8
Steel models, plugins you can sign without the release key, and change notices for FabWire.
OPEN A STEEL MODEL
File -> Open Model (IFC)... opens a detailer's model from Tekla, SDS2 or
anything else that writes IFC, and totals it the way an estimator does:
pieces, feet, pounds and tons by profile, every part with its mark and
assembly, and the bolts by size. The weights are the model's own, from its
base quantities or the detailing program's, and a part the model gives no
weight for is named and left out of the total rather than counted as nothing.
Save either list as CSV. Dropping an .ifc on the window opens it the same way.
Drawing the model in 3D comes next.
COMBINING
A combined set gets one bookmark per file it came from, named after the file.
PLUGINS
Plugins can be signed with a key made for plugins alone, so the key that
signs releases stays put away. Plugins already signed keep working.
Plugins -> Save This Drawing for a Plugin Test... saves every sheet, for a
command that looks at the whole drawing.
CHANGE NOTICES
Studio -> Office -> Change notices. Give it FabWire's address and the office
server tells FabWire whenever a drawing set's markups change, instead of
FabWire asking over and over. Each notice says which set and job changed,
signed so FabWire knows it came from your server. No drawing or markup goes
with it. A sealed server sends them only inside your network.
ALSO, FROM 0.6.7
Combine in Excalibur View from Explorer's right-click menu, clouds and
callouts from a Revu chest that draw as themselves, and a chest shared with
Share one that names the markups list's columns.
Excalibur View 0.6.7
Combine from Explorer, chest markups that draw as themselves, and plugins anyone can write.
COMBINE IN EXCALIBUR VIEW
Select some PDFs in Explorer, right-click, and pick Combine in Excalibur View
(on Windows 11 it's under Show more options). They open in the Combine window
in the order their names read, going into Combined.pdf beside the first one.
Change the order with the arrows, or take one off the list, before you run it.
TOOL CHEST MARKUPS
A cloud, callout, arrow, text box or any other tool from a chest that only
marks up used to draw as a rectangle in the tool's colour. Each one now draws
as the kind of markup it is, with the look the chest gave it, and goes back to
Revu as the same tool. Volume, diameter, radius and angle tools from a chest
measure as themselves too, and a volume asks for its depth.
SHARED CHESTS AND THE MARKUPS LIST
A chest shared from Studio with Share one now names the columns in the
office's markups list, and in the markups list other programs read from the
server. Before, only a Revu profile did that, and a chest shared as an
Excalibur View file left them as Custom 1, Custom 2 and so on.
WRITING A PLUGIN
Plugins -> Save This Sheet for a Plugin Test... writes what a plugin would be
handed for the sheet on screen, to test against. Hyperview.exe --plugin-check
runs a plugin that hasn't been signed yet, once, in the same sandbox a signed
one gets, and says whether it's ready. Neither installs anything.
excaliburct.com/plugins/ has the whole process.
Excalibur View 0.6.6
Licences that arrive by themselves, and the right version on the server.
LICENCES
A licence is now signed the moment Square says an order is paid, by a service
that is always up, and published where your office server already looks for
it. This version trusts the key that service signs with. That key signs
licences and nothing else: every update is still checked against the same
key it always was, and nothing this version runs is trusted any more than
before.
Every licence you already have keeps working exactly as it did.
ADDING USERS AND RENEWING
Studio -> Office -> License -> Renew or add users now opens a page that
already knows which licence is yours. Pay, and the same licence comes back
with the new count or the new date, and your server picks it up by itself
within half an hour. Nobody types a company name, so a purchase cannot land
on the wrong licence because of how a name was spelled.
On a Sealed computer, where the program opens no links, Copy license id on
the same screen and paste it into excaliburct.com/add from any computer.
THE SERVER'S VERSION
The office server's name at the top of the window carried the version the
server was on the first time this computer found it, and kept showing it
after every update. It shows the name alone now. The version the server is
really running is under Studio -> Office.
Excalibur View 0.6.5
Locked drawing sets, a jobsite that can reach the office, and who sees
which job.
OPENING A LOCKED SET
A drawing set somebody else locked with a password now opens. Type the
password when it asks. It reads the four kinds of lock in circulation --
AES-256, AES-128, and the two older RC4 ones -- and the properties panel
names which one a file uses. Three of the four have not been real
protection for years, and it says so rather than letting you believe a set
is safe to send when it is not.
Markups you add to a locked set are locked the same way when you save, so
the file still opens with the same password and with nothing else. A weakly
locked file keeps its weak lock rather than being quietly upgraded: changing
it would lock out everybody else who has the password.
DRAWING
The area tools drag. Press at one corner of a plate and let go at the
opposite one, or keep clicking corner by corner for an irregular shape --
Area, Volume, Perimeter, Area Cutout and Polygon all do both now. A plate
used to take four clicks.
REACHING THE OFFICE FROM A JOBSITE
Studio -> Office -> Remote access. An administrator pastes a Cloudflare
tunnel token and a hostname, and the office server answers from outside the
shop with nothing opened on the firewall. The tunnel is yours: your
Cloudflare account, your hostname, your token.
A seat that has used the server in the office finds it from a truck by
itself. Nobody types an address.
A sealed server refuses all of this and says why, which is what the Sealed
edition is for.
WHO SEES WHICH JOB
A project with nobody named on it is everybody's, exactly as before, so a
shop that ignores this sees no change. Name one person on a job and it
becomes theirs -- the drawings, sheets, markups and takeoff with it.
Administrators see everything. Take the last person off and it is
everybody's again.
GETTING PEOPLE IN
Invite one person instead of sharing one code. An invitation names who it is
for, carries the role they get, runs out on a date, and dies when it is
used. It works even on a server that is otherwise closed.
The shared join code can now be given a date too. It still works forever if
that is what you want, but that has to be chosen rather than being what
happens by not choosing.
FIXED
A seat that lost signal partway through pushing markups could end up sending
them twice, leaving the office holding two of everything somebody drew in a
trailer.
A dropped connection showed an operating-system error number instead of a
sentence. A request that never reached the server is now simply sent again.
A bid pushed from FabWire without a job number arrived named after a
timestamp.

The first person to open Excalibur View after the server is up sets it up and gets a join code for everybody else.
Excalibur View 0.6.4
The Mac version — and the first public release since 0.6.1, so this carries
0.6.2 and 0.6.3 with it.
It runs on a Mac
One download, signed and notarized by Apple, running natively on Apple Silicon
and Intel. Not a viewer, not a browser tab, not a cut-down edition: the same
program as the Windows one, built from the same source. Open the disk image,
drag Excalibur View into Applications, and open it from there.
Bluebeam stopped making Revu for Mac in 2019 and ended it in 2023. As far as we
know this is the only full desktop takeoff and markup program that runs
natively on both Windows and Mac.
Macs keep themselves up to date the same way Windows machines do. An office
server holds both builds and hands each seat its own, so a shop with Macs and
PCs in it is still one server and one set of drawings.
Needs macOS 11 Big Sur or later.
Excalibur View Sealed
For offices that are not allowed to let a program reach the internet at all.
A Sealed copy talks to its own office server and nothing else — every outward
connection is refused, not merely switched off, and no setting inside the
program can turn it back on. Administrators set it through Group Policy on
Windows or a managed preference on a Mac, and policy outranks the licence:
a computer sealed by its administrator stays sealed.
Sealed offices keep an append-only record of who did what, exportable as CSV
for an auditor.
A shop can take somebody's access away
Until now the only way to deal with somebody leaving was to change the join
code, which does nothing to the account they already have or the session they
are already in.
Sign Out now signs a seat out for real. The session is destroyed on the
server, so the token stops working the moment it is pressed rather than thirty
days later.
The server can also change a person's role and remove them outright. Both take
effect on the next thing that seat asks it, not the next time it signs in, so
there is no window where a removed account still works, and removing somebody
takes their keys with them. These two are on the server before they are on a
screen: today an administrator makes the request to the server directly, and
the People screen that puts it in front of you is the next thing being built.
What somebody made stays behind them. A markup carries its author's name and a
set carries who uploaded it, written down as text rather than pointing at an
account, so a takeoff does not lose its history because somebody left the
company.
Every one of these — adding a person, changing a role, removing one, signing a
seat out, revoking a key, exporting a takeoff — goes into the record the
server keeps, with who did it and when. So does a sign-in refused for an
address nobody has, which is the one an administrator most wants to see.
Licences that renew themselves
Buying three more seats means waiting on a file to be signed and emailed over.
A server can now fetch its own renewal instead, on the same half-hourly trip
it already makes to look for updates, so more seats or another year are in
place inside the hour with nobody sending anybody anything.
Nothing about that trip decides a licence is good. What comes back is checked
against the keys built into the server, the same way an update is, and then
checked against the licence already held: one that gives fewer seats, ends
sooner, or belongs to somebody else is thrown away and the old one kept. It is
not an account — no password, no session, nothing to reset — and the server
sends nothing about itself, not a seat count, not a company name.
This ships switched off, and switches on the day we publish the first renewal.
A sealed office never asks at all, by design: its licences arrive as files, by
hand, the way a sealed office wants everything to arrive.
Also in this release
- The AI assistant works in the free app, not only in Office (0.6.2).
- The website's download links and checksums come off the release itself, so
they are never out of date (0.6.2). - Licence rules finished: seats, expiry and what happens when a licence runs
out are all settled the same way everywhere (0.6.2). - Markup text no longer sits over the sheet by default (0.6.3).
- Staying signed in to Studio, with the signed-in account shown in the top bar.
- Updates now carry more than one platform in a single release, and a signature
over one platform's build can never be passed off as another's. - Clicking a button no longer switched the keyboard off. Any button that had
been clicked kept the focus, and while it had it every shortcut in the
program was ignored — copy, paste, save, delete, the arrow keys, page up and
down, find, every tool letter. Nothing said so, so it read as shortcuts that
had never been wired up. The keys now belong to a text field only while
somebody is typing in one. - Studio's project list keeps itself current. It used to be asked for once, at
sign-in, so a drawing set somebody else put on the server — or that FabWire
pushed across from a bid — did not appear until the program was quit and
started again.
