GainMesh v1.3.17
GainMesh 1.3.17

Stability
- Fixed total silence after macOS restarted its audio service (
coreaudiod); GainMesh now detects the restart, a lost engine or a stalled callback and reconnects automatically with bounded retries (a user-stopped session stays stopped). - Quitting or stopping after a restart/crash no longer leaves system output on the virtual GainMesh device.
- Engine restarts are no longer blocked by audio objects that Core Audio already destroyed.
- Fixed translations falling back to English with newer SwiftPM toolchains.
Performance
- The equalizer runs once on the source instead of once per speaker channel (~3× cheaper with four speakers); identity EQ bands are skipped with bit-identical output.
- Now-playing metadata comes from one resident helper that reports only changes, instead of launching a script every 2–5 s.
- The notch visualizer parks its display link and slows spectrum sampling during silence; drawing cost is less than half.
UI/UX
- State-aware menu-bar icon (playing, stopped, reconnecting, attention).
- "Reconnecting audio" panel state with a "Reconnect now" action (12 languages).
- Solid black notch background in every state.
- Clicking the album art in the expanded notch opens the playing app (or Apple Music).
Updates
- New versions are announced once; "Download" fetches the notarized installer package, verifies its Developer ID Installer signature for team 8YKYNYSV6L and opens macOS Installer, falling back to the download page.
Open the DMG and run Install GainMesh.pkg (or run the PKG directly); restart if the installer asks.

GainMesh v1.2.4
Install
Download GainMesh-1.2.4.dmg, run Install GainMesh.pkg, and approve the administrator prompt. No restart — GainMesh reopens itself when the installer finishes.
Fixes in v1.2.4 — recommended for everyone on v1.2.3
- The notch visualizer no longer slows down, freezes or shrinks. Two faults were behind it. Every time the notch overlay was rebuilt — a display change, waking the Mac, or switching the setting off and on — a new spectrum analyzer was created while the old one kept running, so the work piled up until the animation stalled. And when frames were dropped, the animation replayed in slow motion instead of simply skipping. Both are fixed: one analyzer is kept for as long as the overlay exists, and the animation now keeps real time.
- Lighter on battery. The visualizer runs on a steady 30 Hz schedule instead of the display link, which macOS throttles unpredictably for a menu-bar panel, and it slows to a trickle while playback is paused. Idle CPU measured 14% before and 8.5% after.
Since v1.2.2
Installing, updating and uninstalling need no restart; the player card is narrower with the song title on its own line, a proper drop shadow, and a denser spectrum beside the notch.
Requires macOS 14.2 or later on Apple silicon. Signed with Apple Developer ID (team 8YKYNYSV6L) and notarized by Apple.
GainMesh v1.2.3
Install
Download GainMesh-1.2.3.dmg, run Install GainMesh.pkg, and approve the administrator prompt. No restart — GainMesh reopens itself when the installer finishes.
What's new in v1.2.3
- The player card fits the screen it's on. It is noticeably narrower — more so on a MacBook, where the notch already takes room — and the song title now gets a line of its own instead of being cut off by the playback buttons, which moved down beside the artist.
- A real drop shadow. The expanded card was drawn flat against the desktop; it now casts a soft shadow and reads as a card floating below the notch.
- A livelier spectrum beside the notch. The compact visualizer in the notch wing drew six wide bands that all moved together; it now packs twelve narrow ones that clearly react to the music.
Since v1.2.2
No restart is required to install, update or uninstall, and the notch player no longer clips into a MacBook's display cutout.
Requires macOS 14.2 or later on Apple silicon. Signed with Apple Developer ID (team 8YKYNYSV6L) and notarized by Apple.
GainMesh v1.2.2
Install
Download GainMesh-1.2.2.dmg, run Install GainMesh.pkg, and approve the administrator prompt. That is all — no restart, and GainMesh reopens itself when the installer finishes.
Fixes in v1.2.2
- No restart, ever. Installing, updating and uninstalling all finish without rebooting your Mac. Core Audio only needs its daemon reloaded to pick up the GainMesh driver, so the installer does exactly that and reopens the app afterwards.
- The notch player no longer clips on MacBooks. The expanded card drew its spectrum into the display cutout, which sliced it in half. Everything now starts below the cutout.
From v1.2.1 and v1.2.0
The notch companion with six visualizer styles and six color palettes, real album artwork, the player with a draggable timeline, the equalizer status card, visible update alerts, and the tidied settings are all included.
Requires macOS 14.2 or later on Apple silicon. Signed with Apple Developer ID (team 8YKYNYSV6L) and notarized by Apple.
GainMesh v1.2.1
Install
Download GainMesh-1.2.1.dmg, run Install GainMesh.pkg, and approve the administrator prompt. A restart is now only required when the audio driver itself changes — app-only updates finish without one.
New in v1.2.1
- No more forced restarts. The installer now ships the app and the audio driver as separate components and checks which driver your Mac already runs. If it matches, the driver is skipped and the update installs without a restart. Updating from an older build still restarts once, because that is when the new driver lands.
- The notch fits your Mac. On a MacBook with a notch, the display cutout has no pixels, so GainMesh now hugs the housing exactly: while music plays, album art slides out on the left and a compact spectrum on the right. On external displays without a notch, the spectrum fills the whole band beside the artwork. Nothing playing, nothing showing.
- Real album artwork. macOS 26 stopped handing artwork to third-party apps, so GainMesh asks the Music app directly. The first time, macOS asks for your permission.
- Play works from a stopped player. Pressing play with nothing loaded now starts your music instead of doing nothing.
- Settings tidied up. Every row uses the same layout — label on the left, control on the right — and the scrollbar no longer overlaps switches and menus.
- Versioned downloads. Release files now carry their version:
GainMesh-1.2.1.dmg.
Since v1.2.0
The notch companion, its six visualizer styles and six color palettes, the equalizer status card, visible update alerts, the pinned equalizer header, and the slim scrollbars all arrived in v1.2.0 and are included here.
Requires macOS 14.2 or later on Apple silicon. Signed with Apple Developer ID (team 8YKYNYSV6L) and notarized by Apple.
GainMesh v1.2.0
Install
Download GainMesh.dmg, run Install GainMesh.pkg, approve the administrator prompt, and restart your Mac. GainMesh starts on its own after the restart, in the menu bar.
New in v1.2.0 — the notch comes alive
- Notch music visualizer. A live spectrum dances around the notch (a drawn notch appears on Macs without one), reacting to whatever is playing through GainMesh. Six styles — Bars, LED matrix, Mirrored peaks, Dots, Wave, Rainbow — and six color palettes — Aurora, Ocean, Sunset, Neon, Candy, Rainbow — selectable in Settings. On by default; turn it off in Settings.
- Notch player. Hover the notch and it expands into a Liquid Glass player: artwork, track info, previous/play/next, and a draggable timeline with elapsed and remaining time. The whole surface grows out of the notch in one animation.
- EQ at a glance. The main screen shows the active equalizer state (preset name, Custom, or Bypassed) under the master volume — click it to open the editor.
- Update alerts you can see. Checking for updates now shows a proper dialog with a Download button, and the automatic check announces new versions the same way.
- Polish. The EQ editor keeps its header pinned with a clear pending-changes bar, the window is larger (560×520), scrollbars are slim and trackless, and holding a slider's arrow key adjusts continuously.
Requires macOS 14.2 or later on Apple silicon. Signed with Apple Developer ID (team 8YKYNYSV6L) and notarized by Apple.
GainMesh v1.1.10
Install
Download GainMesh.dmg, run Install GainMesh.pkg, approve the administrator prompt, and restart your Mac. GainMesh starts on its own after the restart, in the menu bar.
Fixes since v1.1.7 — please update
- Fixed: the app quit itself a few seconds after every launch. The silence watch added in v1.1.6 ran its audio callback with the wrong isolation, and Swift's runtime trapped the process the moment Core Audio called it. The app appeared briefly and vanished, and starting at login looked like it never ran. Every build from v1.1.6 to v1.1.9 is affected.
- Uninstall now works. It moved into the app: open the menu-bar icon, choose the … menu, then Uninstall GainMesh. The disk image's uninstaller was blocked by macOS with a "Move to Trash" dialog — a downloaded script cannot be opened by double-click, and a shell script cannot be notarized to avoid that. Inside the notarized app there is no such gate.
- Holding a slider arrow key now adjusts continuously and silently. It moved a single step per press before, and an interim build beeped once per key repeat.
Also since v1.1.5
- Bluetooth speakers reach full volume, run at their own sample rate for cleaner audio, and idle links are allowed to rest during silence.
- Per-speaker Reset button.
Requires macOS 14.2 or later on Apple silicon. Signed with Apple Developer ID (team 8YKYNYSV6L) and notarized by Apple.
GainMesh v1.1.7
Install
Download GainMesh.dmg, run Install GainMesh.pkg, approve the administrator prompt, and restart your Mac. GainMesh starts on its own after the restart, in the menu bar.
New in v1.1.7
- Sliders now keep moving while you hold an arrow key. Every slider only responded to the initial key press, so adjusting one by keyboard meant releasing and pressing again for each single step. Arrow keys and Page Up/Down now repeat while held.
Also in v1.1.6
- Bluetooth speakers reach full volume. GainMesh pins a selected speaker's hardware volume so its own slider is the only control that matters, but Bluetooth devices expose a different volume control than wired ones and were silently skipped — a Bluetooth speaker could sit far below full hardware volume while GainMesh showed 100%.
- Cleaner Bluetooth audio. Routing to a Bluetooth speaker through a wired display's clock added continuous crackle that a direct connection did not have. GainMesh now runs at the Bluetooth device's own sample rate when one is selected.
- Idle Bluetooth links can rest. After 10 seconds of confirmed silence GainMesh hands your speaker back to itself, and returns the moment anything plays.
- Per-speaker Reset button.
Requires macOS 14.2 or later on Apple silicon. Signed with Apple Developer ID (team 8YKYNYSV6L) and notarized by Apple.
GainMesh v1.1.6
Install
Download GainMesh.dmg, run Install GainMesh.pkg, approve the administrator prompt, and restart your Mac. GainMesh starts on its own after the restart, in the menu bar.
New in v1.1.6
- Bluetooth speakers now reach full volume. GainMesh normalizes a selected speaker's hardware volume so its own slider is the only control that matters — but Bluetooth devices expose a different volume control than wired ones, so this silently skipped them. A Bluetooth speaker could sit far below full hardware volume while GainMesh showed 100% or even the new 200% boost. Fixed: GainMesh now reaches and holds the correct control on Bluetooth devices too.
- Cleaner Bluetooth audio. Measured against direct playback: routing to a Bluetooth speaker through a wired display's clock added continuous crackle a direct connection did not have. GainMesh now runs the engine at the Bluetooth device's own sample rate when one is selected, removing that always-on conversion.
- Idle Bluetooth links can rest. GainMesh previously kept streaming even during silence, which some Bluetooth amplifiers and radios never got to sleep through — audible as idle hiss or static a direct connection did not have. After 10 seconds of confirmed silence, GainMesh now hands your speaker back to itself directly and silently returns the moment anything plays again.
- Per-speaker Reset button. Volume, balance and delay return to their defaults in one press.
Building on v1.1.5: 200% volume boost, ±5 s per-speaker delay in 1 ms steps, and an automatic update check switch in Settings.
Requires macOS 14.2 or later on Apple silicon. Signed with Apple Developer ID (team 8YKYNYSV6L) and notarized by Apple.
