Plan Paint 1.1.4 — Windows input and repaint fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@falseywinchnet falseywinchnet released this 04 Oct 08:23

Plan Paint 1.1.4

Plan Paint 1.1.4 updates GUI.Forms to improve Windows input handling and repainting.

  • Keyboard and mouse input receive regular processing opportunities while application repaint messages are queued. Ordinary queued work continues to make progress.
  • Translated text stays ahead of later keystrokes, preventing a later Backspace from overtaking a character that Windows has already translated.
  • Repaints include the complete native update bounds even when a smaller logical update is pending. This addresses stale pixel edges and missed exposed areas.

The classic Windows 7/10 Paint ribbon, path editing, stamps, custom patterns and reshape tools remain available. Existing dropdown, cursor, language, font fallback, accessibility and Alt+F4 corrections are included in the new toolkit snapshot.

Source and builds

The checksum-pinned GUI.Forms snapshot is commit 814ef16a714c4d8f9f75b3a80fcb36b1888a21c8 from falseywinchnet/file_manager, directory gui_forms. The archive is included with this release for reproducible source builds. No additional toolkit patches are required. The optional transactional DIB development backend remains disabled.

Packages target Windows x64, Apple Silicon macOS, Linux x64 and Linux ARM64. macOS requires version 26 or newer; its application is ad-hoc signed and its installer is unsigned. Linux requires X11 or XWayland. Windows 7/10 describes the familiar interface; Windows 7 operating-system support has not been verified.

Validation

All four native builds passed at release commit 1ee9ce30fcee8f33626b9c35ebce95424ea60555 (CI run).

Platform GUI.Forms tests Paint tests
Windows x64 72 16
macOS ARM64 83 16
Linux x64 77 17
Linux ARM64 77 17

Style checks passed on every platform. Windows and macOS packaged Russian-language startup checks passed. Both Linux packages launched on glibc hosts without a preinstalled musl loader and passed the native Paint fixture there. The Windows package also received visual inspection of the ribbon, canvas and pencil drawing. Translated-character ordering is covered by the automated queue tests; interactive text-entry stress testing is not claimed.

Windows and Linux package manifests were checked against every recorded file hash. SHA256SUMS covers the four platform downloads and the pinned toolkit source archive.

To the Holy One, blessed be He, from whom all good things come.

Plan Paint 1.1.3 — Smoother drawing and Deluxe wheels

Choose a tag to compare

@falseywinchnet falseywinchnet released this 30 Sep 07:57

Plan Paint 1.1.3

Plan Paint 1.1.3 adds selectable drawing smoothness, clearer path editing, and expanded Deluxe-style Spirograph controls while preserving direct editing of the raster canvas.

Drawing and path editing

  • Choose Crisp, the existing Smooth, or 4× Smooth for lines, polygons and paths. The 4× mode renders at higher resolution and downsamples with alpha weighting; bounded tiles keep memory use controlled.
  • Enable Edit nodes to drag path junctions with the primary mouse button. Blank clicks add nothing in this mode. Continue path returns to construction.
  • Click an existing curved segment to reveal its square handles. Hover and active highlights clarify which control will move. Overlapping targets choose the nearest handle, and dragging preserves the grab offset.
  • Each drag is one Undo step. Undo also ends an interrupted handle drag. The in-app help explains the workflow in all 22 language catalogs.

Spirograph

  • Resize the apparatus relative to the paper with Scale or its canvas handle. Moving and resizing the guide carries a seated wheel without depositing ink.
  • Lift wheel permits free placement while preserving rotation. An amber outline identifies a detached wheel; Operate becomes available again when the wheel is seated on its guide. Repositioning does not draw a connecting line.
  • The catalog includes the paired 144/96 and 150/105 rings, all 15 Deluxe circular wheel counts, Rack 150, Bar 40, Eye 60, Triangle 54 and Quad 60. Numbered-hole selection and Load Primary / Load Alt reduce precise pointer targeting.
  • Quad rolls along rounded tips and pivots between adjacent endpoints. It supports the two kit-ring interiors, with eight and seven repeats respectively. A roughly 0.27% guide-dependent size adjustment matches those repeating patterns. Other guides and outside rolling are disabled for Quad.

Shaped-wheel outlines and hole coordinates are visually close approximations, not measured molded-part replicas. Eye and Triangle perimeter choices follow or are consistent with the kit pattern charts. See the Spirograph documentation for geometry and compatibility details.

Native platform improvements

Windows accessibility self references and Alt+F4 dispatch are corrected in the pinned GUI.Forms dependency. Runtime resources follow the executable even with a custom build output directory. Native recovery tests use isolated snapshots. The release workflow builds and tests Windows x64, Linux x64, Linux ARM64 and macOS ARM64 independently.

macOS requires version 26 or newer. The Mac application is ad-hoc signed; the installer is unsigned and not notarized. Linux requires X11 or XWayland. Windows 7 operating-system compatibility and Intel Mac builds have not been verified.

Plan Paint 1.1.2 — Filled guide bodies

@falseywinchnet falseywinchnet released this 23 Sep 09:06
5f27981

Plan Paint 1.1.2

Plan Paint 1.1.2 fixes body protection for guides created from a selection.

Filled selection guides

A tightening lasso around an outlined shape selects its ink. Previously, turning that selection into a guide left its enclosed center paintable even when Fill was enabled. Switching to Brush hid the editing handles, making the narrow remaining stencil look as though it had disappeared.

With Fill enabled, selection-derived guides now protect the enclosed body as well as the selected ink. The protected area remains visibly hatched when switching to Brush. Both Brush and Guide stay highlighted: Brush is the current tool and Guide is the active stencil. Turning Fill off restores boundary-only protection.

The conversion preserves feathered exterior edges and leaves exterior-connected gaps open. It prepares the body mask once, keeping per-pixel painting checks constant-time. The original artwork is unchanged by creating the guide.

Compatibility

This patch retains the Windows language fixes, package optimizations, settings and file compatibility of 1.1.1. The Forms interface remains the released frontend. macOS requires version 26 or newer; Linux requires X11 or XWayland.

Plan Paint 1.1.1 — Windows language fixes and smaller packages

Choose a tag to compare

@falseywinchnet falseywinchnet released this 23 Sep 07:51
48122dc

Plan Paint 1.1.1

Plan Paint 1.1.1 fixes missing translated text on Windows, makes language selection easier to recover, and reduces package and font-memory overhead.

Windows text and ribbon labels

Ribbon captions made entirely from characters outside the primary UI font could disappear. The Windows text resolver now preserves valid fallback-only layouts, including Russian tab names. It uses the bundled Carlito face for Cyrillic and the supplied Arabic, Hebrew and Indic faces when needed. Longer translated captions fit their ribbon buttons.

Language selection

Settings shows every language choice when the window has room. A visible scrollbar appears when the list needs more space. In non-English interfaces, Help! English! appears beside Help. Its confirmation stays in English; OK saves English as the application language and asks for a restart. The picture remains open so it can be saved first. Cancel leaves the preference unchanged.

Smaller packages and fewer font copies

The macOS and Linux renderer shares immutable file mappings between rasterization and text shaping instead of retaining full-font heap copies. Glyph caches and other rendering resources still use memory. This is a reduction in font-storage overhead, not a fixed total-RAM promise.

Packaging removes unneeded symbols from executables and runtime libraries. macOS uses improved installer compression and Windows uses maximum ZIP deflate compression. Every bundled font and all 22 language packs remain included.

Compatibility

Existing settings, recovery records and pictures remain compatible. The Forms interface remains the only released frontend. macOS requires version 26 or newer and uses an ad-hoc signature without Developer ID notarization. Linux requires X11 or XWayland. Native operating-system dialogs follow the system language. Independent translation proofreading and end-to-end assistive-technology user testing remain ongoing.

Plan Paint 1.1 — Languages and new drawing controls

Choose a tag to compare

@falseywinchnet falseywinchnet released this 22 Sep 20:15
4aca61e

Plan Paint 1.1

Plan Paint 1.1 brings a multilingual interface and additional ways to draw without holding a mouse button. The familiar native Forms ribbon keeps selection, text, polygons, editable paths and brushes close at hand for quick edits, memes and drawing.

Languages

The application reads the operating system's preferred languages and chooses a supported match. Settings can override that choice; restart after changing languages. English is compiled in, and missing translations fall back to English.

Twenty-two UTF-8 JSON packs cover 679 messages each, including the in-app guide: Arabic, Bengali, German, Spanish, Persian, French, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Punjabi in Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi scripts, Nigerian Pidgin, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

Bundled fonts, bidirectional ordering and improved wrapping support these scripts. Independent native-speaker proofreading remains welcome. Right-to-left text is supported; the complete ribbon layout is not mirrored. Native operating-system dialogs retain the system language.

Drawing controls

Enable Canvas controls in Settings to enter a drawing position, move by a chosen pixel step, click with either color, and start or finish a stroke through separate buttons. Checkbox controls replace held shape modifiers. Drawing coordinates remain tied to the original image when the working view is rotated.

Spirograph peg activation can seat a peg without dragging and resize a selected peg without losing its ink. On the custom pattern canvas, arrows choose a pixel, Space paints black and Enter paints white.

The application exposes names, roles, values and actions through macOS accessibility, Windows MSAA and Linux AT-SPI. Dialogs and popups limit the accessible controls to the active interaction. Voice Control, switch scanning, eye tracking and screen-reader usability still require end-to-end testing; protocol tests alone do not establish universal access.

Installation and compatibility

The Forms interface remains the primary application. The deprecated SDL/ImGui frontend is not packaged. Existing settings are read by the new version; saved pictures remain ordinary image files.

Distribute the complete package, including fonts, language packs and runtime libraries. English continues to work if optional language packs are removed. macOS builds use an ad-hoc signature and are not Developer ID notarized. Linux requires X11 or XWayland; assistive technologies also require the desktop accessibility bus.

Plan Paint 1.0 — Native Forms, gradients and a new name

Choose a tag to compare

@falseywinchnet falseywinchnet released this 22 Sep 09:38

Plan Paint 1.0 is the new name of Rainstar Paint. The native GUI.Forms application is now the primary and only released frontend. The older SDL/ImGui frontend is deprecated and remains available in source for historical comparison.

This release includes the new brush-pot icon and refreshed in-app Help and About documentation, including Jeremiah 29:11:

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Changes in 1.0:

  • Gradient bucket fills: linear with angle or circular, 2–32 movable color stops, per-stop transparency, reverse, and twelve presets including rainbow, fire, electric blue, chrome, gunmetal and galaxy.
  • Interface hue settings, tighter ribbon spacing, atomic saving and crash recovery.
  • Refined OKLab dithering and posterization, with the independent dithering brush retained.
  • Spirograph guides, inserts and media pegs; gel pens, custom pattern canvas, native cursors, Carpet textures, persistent selections and working-view rotation.

Install the macOS package, or extract the complete Windows/Linux archive. Run plan-paint.exe on Windows or Plan Paint on Linux. Existing preferences, palettes, patterns and recovery data remain available; internal storage and the macOS application identifier retain compatibility with earlier releases.

The Mac app requires Apple Silicon and macOS 26 or newer. It is ad-hoc signed, without Developer ID notarization. Linux requires X11 or XWayland; native Wayland and mixed-DPI Linux are not supported. Windows 7 operating-system compatibility is not claimed.

See verification.json for platform-specific checks and SHA256SUMS for package integrity. The application, source code and original artwork are available under the MIT license; dependencies retain their own notices.

Rainstar Paint 0.3.9 — Spirograph, pattern canvas and dithering

Choose a tag to compare

@falseywinchnet falseywinchnet released this 22 Sep 07:29

Rainstar Paint 0.3.9 adds drawing apparatus, custom pattern editing and perceptual color reduction to the native application.

  • Custom pattern canvas: choose Materials → Edit custom pattern. Edit a black-and-white tile from 1–128 pixels per side, with a repeating preview, separate Undo/Redo and saved tile. Return to main canvas restores the image, selection, view and drawing history. New classic patterns include Buttons, Cargo Net, Circuits, Cobblestones and Straw Mat.
  • Spirograph: 16 guides and 23 inserts, including rings, shaped frames and racks. Place and fill ink pegs, select a peg to assign its own brush medium, and drag the insert to draw. The translucent apparatus follows ordinary Guide dismissal rules.
  • Gel pen: a solid stroke with subtle brightness variation and glints, available both as a brush and as peg ink.
  • Tool cursors: original Paint-drawn pointer artwork with precise contact points. Magnifier and Stamp previews remain unobstructed.
  • Selection dithering: Selection → Dither / posterize… offers 2–32 colors, Crosswind, Weave, Scrambled, Drift and plain posterization. Preview and cancellation leave the image untouched; Apply commits the preview as one undoable edit. Alpha and unselected pixels are preserved.
  • Dithering brush: scattered, center-weighted changes to existing pixels. The default moves each affected pixel halfway toward its neighborhood average; the Tool tab offers gentle brightness/saturation noise instead. Both modes respect the active selection and preserve alpha.

The dither palette uses bounded OKLab sampling with local variation and Student-t coverage. The allocator is a practical first version for experimentation on different materials; it does not claim an optimal minimum palette. The new renderer needs no Fourier library.

Packages are provided for Apple Silicon Mac, Windows x64, Linux x64 and Linux ARM64. Linux archives include their musl loader, libraries and fonts, and require X11 or XWayland. The Mac app requires macOS 26 or newer, is ad-hoc signed, and is not Developer ID notarized. The familiar Windows 7/10 interface does not imply verified Windows 7 compatibility.

SHA256SUMS lists the release downloads. Verification details accompany the release.

Validation: 10/10 Paint suites on macOS ARM64 and Windows x64; 11/11 on Linux x64 and ARM64. The native toolkit passes 62/62 checks on Windows and 67/67 on each Linux architecture. Both Linux packages pass startup and native interaction checks on an Ubuntu host without its own musl loader. All Windows/Linux package manifest hashes and twelve bundled fonts verify; all 81 Mac installer payload files match the signed app. The packaged Mac app was visually checked for dithering and the custom pattern canvas, including return to the original canvas. No new sanitizer or heap-audit result is claimed.

Rainstar Paint 0.3.6

Choose a tag to compare

@falseywinchnet falseywinchnet released this 21 Sep 23:51

Rainstar Paint 0.3.6 adds freehand filled shapes, a global color-similarity magic wand, and optional working-view rotation while retaining original document coordinates.

  • Enable the rotation grip in Settings; drag outside the canvas corner to rotate and right-click to reset upright without resampling the document.
  • Arrow keys pan. The hand-held picker samples Primary/Alt on click and pans on drag.
  • Eraser operations are available from the icon, with effect controls retained in the Eraser tab.
  • Custom sizes from 1–1024 px are available after 64 px and from the status bar.
  • CONV point previews and area-integrated committed transforms improve object manipulation.
  • Fixes rotated-view flashing and reduces redundant rendering, discarded CONV preparation, thread creation and stamp rebuilding.

The optional view-rotation cache remains memory-intensive and limits nonconstant prepared sources to roughly one million pixels. Direct pixel feedback remains available while preparation is pending or unavailable. View rotation is off by default.

Choose the package for your operating system and processor. macOS requires version 26 or newer; the app is ad-hoc signed and the installer is unsigned, without Developer ID notarization. Linux uses X11/XWayland. Windows 7 operating-system compatibility is not verified. SHA256SUMS accompanies the downloads.

Rainstar Paint 0.3.5

Choose a tag to compare

@falseywinchnet falseywinchnet released this 20 Sep 22:57

Rainstar Paint 0.3.5 adds persistent selection stencils, skew handles and two-click shape placement.

  • Canvas selections persist across tool changes. Drawing, fills, brushes, stamps, erasing, shapes, paths and text stay inside the selected region; lasso holes remain protected. Escape deselects.
  • Pasted images remain floating overlays and do not restrict painting underneath. Copy and move use the current selected artwork. Undo and Redo retain the selection alongside the edit.
  • Four small gold handles skew selected artwork and its mask. Top and bottom handles slide horizontally; side handles slide vertically, keeping the opposite edge fixed. Transparent selected pixels remain paintable after transforming.
  • Lines and preset shapes now use click, move, click. The first click anchors a preview; the second places it. Escape or right-click cancels. File → Settings → Lines and shapes retains click, hold, release as a saved option. Freehand tools keep their held gesture.
  • Hold Ctrl to draw closed shapes from their center. Circles, stars and regular polygons grow by radius; rectangles and other closed shapes grow symmetrically.

Download the compiled package for your platform: macOS ARM64 installer, Windows x64 ZIP, or Linux x64/ARM64 archive. Extract portable packages completely before launching. SHA256SUMS records the download hashes; verification.json records the completed platform checks. The GUI.Forms source archive is a build dependency, not an application installer.

macOS requires version 26 or newer. The app is ad-hoc signed; its installer is unsigned and not Developer ID notarized. Linux requires X11 or XWayland. Native Wayland, mixed-DPI Linux and Windows 7 compatibility are not verified.

Rainstar Paint 0.3.4 — Carpet textures

Choose a tag to compare

@falseywinchnet falseywinchnet released this 20 Sep 21:35

Rainstar Paint 0.3.4 adds Carpet: a native fiber texture generator for painting and canvas backings.

  • Choose the Brushes arrow → Carpet generator. Twelve presets cover velvet, baize and felt, with ten controls for structure, fiber diameter, depth, nap disorder, crimp, optical roughness, dye concentration, light direction, view tilt and magnification.
  • Optional Horn hillshade adds relief to the fabric color. Dye color and New fibers controls are included.
  • Twelve fabric backings replace the previous alternatives in Settings. The original grey-blue backing remains unchanged.
  • Rendering skips occluded samples before expensive intersections and omits unused normal calculations in the shadow pass. Local 512-square tile timings are 14–24% shorter than the initial native candidate; 42 before/after render comparisons are byte-identical. These are local measurements, not cross-platform timing guarantees.
  • Generation is cancellable and runs on a worker. Painting samples a cached tile; generation scratch and per-gesture coverage storage are released after use.
  • State tracking, momentum damping and sparse smoothing are archived outside the application. The conventional stabilizer remains available.
