GitHub automatic updates

  • Release builds check GitHub for stable updates and download them in the background.
  • Settings → About now includes update checks, download progress, a Restart to update button, and an Automatic updates switch.
  • Updates install on actual exit. Closing to the Windows tray keeps the app running.
  • Explicit update restarts restore the active server, joined channels and keys, query tabs, selected tab, away status, and unsent draft.

Installation and recovery

  • Updates select the correct Windows ARM64/x64/x86, Linux ARM64/x64, or macOS universal binary.
  • Downloads must match GitHub's SHA-256 digest and SHA256SUMS. Windows also verifies both Fara Technologies LLC and Mike Fara signatures.
  • Replacement uses staging on the same filesystem, a durable journal, and a retained backup. An unsuccessful explicit restart restores the previous executable and attempts to reopen it once.
  • Releases are assembled and signed as drafts, then verified before publication.

Upgrading

Existing users must download 0.1.0 manually once to enable future automatic updates. Development builds can check updates but cannot replace themselves. Unwritable installation locations require a manual download.

macOS binaries remain unsigned; follow the installation instructions if macOS blocks the first launch.
