USB/serial would be good for entering PIN and passphrase on hardware wallers. But for other devices, phones, online signing devices, - anything requiring authentication, the device could operate in online/networked mode. It could have a one-way communication mode: HID Input -> encrypted payload ->broadcast to Thread Network. Only the intended recipient would be able to decrypt the payload.
