Cleaner TRELLIS.2 / Pixal3D meshes: no more holes or floating fragments (#1102)
Generated models could come out with holes and disconnected triangles. We measured real generations and found the raw output is already closed; the damage was done afterwards, by the weld and simplify steps. Those are fixed.
- Manifold remesh. When a triangle budget applies, the model is rebuilt as one closed manifold surface before it is simplified, using a simplifier that cannot pinch thin parts together. On six real generations at a 25k-triangle target, non-manifold edges dropped from between 65 and 12,000 to 0, with no open edges and no flipped triangles. Thin double walls fuse into a single slab.
- Gentler weld. The vertex weld was merging distinct surfaces and creating most of the bad edges; it is now much finer.
- Cleanup after simplification. Floating fragments and flipped triangles that the simplifier produced are now removed and re-oriented (this step only used to run before it).
- Trade-offs. The surface can move by about 0.2% of the model size on average (0.64% at worst); fine detail still comes from the normal map baked from the full-resolution source. The step runs only when a triangle budget is set, so "Original" density is untouched. Set
QTMESH_TRELLIS2_NO_REMESH=1to turn it off. The generation path is shared with Pixal3D, which wasn't among the models tested.
MetaHuman .dna import (#1101, experimental)
Import Epic MetaHuman .dna files as a skeleton with a skinned mesh and morph targets through the normal importer, e.g. qtmesh convert head.dna -o head.glb. qtmesh dna info [--json] lists the descriptor, joints, meshes and blend shapes.
- Off by default. Requires building with
-DENABLE_OPENRIGLOGIC=ON; other builds report that it needs a rebuild. - Known limits. macOS arm64 only so far (Linux and Windows are tracked in #1099). Ogre's 255-bone limit means non-deforming joints are dropped and the least influential leaf joints are folded into their parents. Skin is clipped to 4 influences. No rig evaluation, textures, JSON DNA, groom or clothing yet. Details are in
docs/OPENRIGLOGIC.md.
