@fiedoruk fiedoruk released this 25 Sep 16:31

emini Home 0.6.2

A second small release on top of 0.6.0, with the fixes from a fresh review of 0.6.1. Nothing to learn and nothing to set: Home restarts after a crash, a screen you switched off downloads nothing, and failures cost less battery.

What changes

  • A crash restarts Home. Until now a firmware crash left the device standing still: the display kept its last picture and looked fine while the battery ran down, until someone pressed the reset pinhole. Home now starts again by itself. The old behaviour dates from 0.4.0, but Breath switches Wi-Fi off and on many times a day, so it matters more now. One side effect: if the settings area cannot be read at all, Home now restarts over and over instead of stopping at start; Starting over in the installation guide clears it, as before.
  • A screen that is switched off downloads nothing. Weather and News were fetched even after you took them out of the collection. Like Air before them, they are now asked only while their screens are on, which also makes the advice in the privacy notes true: switch News off and Home stops asking the feed. Out of the box the display shows only Weather, but News is in the collection too, so the default BBC feed is still asked about twice an hour; untick Include this screen on the News page if you do not want that.
  • Failed downloads wake the radio less often. After a failure Home waits fifteen minutes, and after each failure that follows twice as long as before, up to two hours. A provider can ask for a longer pause but no longer for a shorter one; Retry-After: 60 used to mean a new radio session every minute or two in Breath. The pause after a radio session that got nothing done, with no network or no time server, now starts over only after something has worked, not after every connection.
  • Only a paired phone keeps the panel open. A pairing attempt from another device on your network no longer adds five minutes, and neither does the draft preview that the panel refreshes by itself when new data arrives.
  • A device with no paired phone rests like any other. Until now Home stayed fully awake, with the radio on and no sleep, until the first phone was paired: after a setup left unfinished, or after you disconnect the last phone, the battery went as fast as in 0.5.2. Pairing needs the setup window anyway (hold OK for two seconds), and the window keeps Wi-Fi on while it is open.
  • The clock stays right with nothing to download. When no screen downloads anything, for example with only Note or Sky on, Breath now wakes the radio every six hours just to ask the time servers, so the clock that Sky, quiet hours and the day rhythm rely on does not drift.
  • Smaller fixes. The week of battery on the emini card no longer shifts the wrong way when the clock is set back past midnight. After two days the card counts the time awake in days, so a long run no longer loses its unit ("10 d 23"); in Chinese it is written in Chinese again (天, or 小时 during the first two days), and a Chinese 12-hour time in its footer is no longer cut short. When nothing can be checked, Check for updates in the panel now says so instead of reporting a failed request, and holding Down to refresh redraws the screen at once.

Documents

The same review corrected the documents and the website: what keeps the panel open in Breath, what a device on your network can read without pairing, how to start the NOTE4C in download mode by hand when esptool cannot reach it, the 0.5.2 battery figure (worked out from two days on battery, not measured over a full charge) and the Chinese font script, which now rebuilds both levels of GB 2312 exactly as they ship.

Updating

  • Write the application at 0x20000 only. Every release so far has used the same partition table, and settings, pairing and the power log are kept. The build configuration differs from 0.6.1 only in what happens after a crash: restart instead of halt (CONFIG_ESP_SYSTEM_PANIC_PRINT_REBOOT, its delay left at the default 0).
  • The image is 3 806 256 bytes; 322 512 bytes remain free in the application slot. Building the public source with ESP-IDF v6.0 gives the same code as the release image; tools/compare_image.py checks it.
  • Installed on one NOTE4C as an update from 0.6.1 with the web installer: a full backup first, then the three parts written and checked on the chip; settings and pairing were kept. In the five hours on battery that followed, in Breath, the radio was on 17 to 27 seconds an hour, Home downloaded four times an hour and its clock stayed within a second of the time servers.
  • 0.6 is the final version of emini Home: no further feature releases are planned.

emini Home 0.6.1

A small fix on top of 0.6.0: the green status LED on the front of the NOTE4C stays off.

The status LED stays off

  • On some units the LED next to the round button stayed lit all the time, on battery too (#2). The firmware installed before Home can leave the LED's pin held on across a restart, and 0.6.0 never touched that pin.
  • Home now releases that pin at start, switches the LED off and keeps it off while the chip sleeps. On units where the LED was already dark nothing changes.
  • A lit LED draws current all day, so on the affected units this also helps the battery.
  • Thanks to @omercelik, who found the cause, wrote the fix and tested it on a NOTE4C (#3).

Everything else is 0.6.0

  • Breath, Open, the emini card and all settings work exactly as in 0.6.0; read its notes for what changed there.
  • Update as before: write the application at 0x20000 only. The partition table and the build configuration are the same as in 0.6.0, and settings, pairing and the power log are kept.
  • The image is 3 805 472 bytes; 323 296 bytes remain free in the application slot. Building the public source with ESP-IDF v6.0 gives the same code as the release image; tools/compare_image.py checks it.
  • Installed and checked on one NOTE4C, where the LED was already dark before the update.
  • 0.6 is the final version of emini Home: no further feature releases are planned.

@fiedoruk fiedoruk released this 23 Sep 10:05

emini Home 0.6.0

The final release of emini Home. It brings Breath, a power mode that turns Wi-Fi off between downloads, so a charge should last weeks instead of days.

Breath

  • Breath is the new default. About twice an hour Home switches the radio on, fetches the weather and the news, and lets it sleep again. Overnight on the tested unit the radio was on for 15 to 55 seconds an hour, with two to four downloads every hour and no restart in a 13-hour run on battery.
  • We expect two to four weeks on a charge. That is an estimate: a full discharge on 0.6.0 has not been measured yet. 0.5.2 lasted a day and a half to two days.
  • The round OK button opens the panel. While the radio sleeps the phone panel cannot reach the device: a panel you already have open says Home is resting, and a new page does not load. A short press on OK / BOOT switches the radio on, and the panel answered about five seconds later on the tested unit, so press, wait a moment, then open or reload the page. It stays open for five minutes, and they start again whenever you ask Home for something in the panel, such as opening it, a preview or a save; what the panel checks by itself does not count. The panel counts the time down under the battery line, and the emini card that the same press shows says Panel open for 5 minutes in its footer.
  • A short press of a side button does not wake the radio. It changes the picture as before. Holding Down for two seconds asks for fresh data, and that does switch the radio on.
  • Open is the other mode, under Settings → Battery → Power: Wi-Fi stays connected and the panel answers at any time, as in earlier releases. We expect about a week on a charge in Open.
  • On a USB cable, while the setup window is open and until the first phone is paired, Home keeps Wi-Fi on in either mode.

After an update you are in Breath

  • Settings, pairing, the Wi-Fi password, cached data and the counters from 0.5.x are all kept, and Home starts in Breath. Press OK on the device once before you open the panel.
  • Going back to 0.5.x afterwards starts that release with default settings, because it does not know the new power setting. Wi-Fi and pairing stay.

Sleep between events

  • 0.5.2 never slept. With Wi-Fi connected and the processor awake around the clock, a full charge lasted a day and a half to two days on the tested unit, worked out from two full days on battery in the device's own history.
  • In both modes 0.6.0 lets the chip fall into light sleep whenever nothing is happening: between pictures, between downloads, between presses.
  • In Open most of the cost is the radio. In its default mode the Wi-Fi driver woke the chip about seven times a second and held it awake about a third of the time. Home now has it wake for every third beacon, keeps it awake for a shorter time after each beacon, and slows the timer of the .local name service from ten ticks a second to two. The chip is free to sleep about 80 % of the time. The panel still answers in well under a second (95 % of requests within about 410 ms in our last measurement) and home-xxxx.local still resolves.
  • On a cable Home never sleeps. Flashing and the USB maintenance protocol behave exactly as they did before.

The buttons still wake it

  • In sleep the pins have no clock, so a button that waited for an edge would never be seen. The buttons now wake the chip on their level, and a press is measured from the moment it happened, not from the next time the device looked.

The emini card has two faces

  • A short press on OK / BOOT shows the front: the battery with an estimate of how long the charge lasts, the number of pictures drawn, a QR code to the project, and the name drawn large in dots behind it.
  • A second press shows the numbers: every counter, how often the main loop wakes, how much of the time the chip may sleep, and a week of battery.
  • A third press sends the card away. Two dots at the top show which face is up. The card is drawn once per press and never on a timer, because every picture costs the paper 25 seconds.

Fewer requests for the news

  • The default BBC World feed declares a lifetime of about two seconds, which on the tested unit meant a request every few minutes: roughly fifteen an hour, each carrying your home IP address to the feed's server. Home now asks about twice an hour, never sooner than 25 minutes after the previous request, whatever a provider declares. A refresh you ask for with a button or in the panel still goes out at once.
  • The User-Agent is now emini-home/0.6.

What Home keeps about itself

  • New in this release: a power log, one line per hour for the last week, with the battery voltage, whether it was charging, the pictures and downloads in that hour, the seconds the chip was not allowed to sleep, and the seconds the display spent drawing and the radio was on.
  • Together that is a trace of when the device was busy and when it sat on a charger. It never leaves the device on its own: it is read only by a paired browser, through GET /api/power, and erasing Home's settings erases it too. The privacy notes describe it in full.
  • The log also means a week on battery is enough to measure how long a charge lasts, without a computer next to the device.

Compatibility and installation

  • Update as before: write the application at 0x20000 only. The partition table is unchanged since 0.3.1.
  • The build configuration changed: power management and tickless idle are on, and two Wi-Fi and name-service timings are set, so emini-home-0.6.0-sdkconfig.txt differs from the one in every earlier release. Building the public source with ESP-IDF v6.0 gives the same code as the release image; tools/compare_image.py checks it.
  • The image is 3 805 392 bytes; 323 376 bytes remain free in the application slot.
  • Tested on one NOTE4C Devkit. All figures about power come from that unit and its battery.

The last release

0.6.0 is the final release of emini Home. The source stays in this repository under the MIT licence for anyone to build, change and install. No further releases are planned; security reports are still read, best effort, as SECURITY.md describes.

@fiedoruk fiedoruk released this 16 Sep 17:14

emini Home 0.5.2

Two fixes to 0.5.1, both found within hours of the release by using it on a fridge door.

The emini card stays put

A short press on the round button shows the card for two minutes. It did not hold the picture, so every automatic change of screens underneath it redrew the card instead of the screen — and because the card counts the pictures drawn and the time each one takes, every redraw came out different, so the guard that skips an identical frame never stopped it. The card kept refreshing, at a full 25 seconds a time, until its window closed.

The card is now drawn once and stays. Anything that changes underneath it waits and arrives as one picture when the card goes away. A press on a side button sends the card away too.

A way out of the setup window

0.5.1 stopped short presses from taking the setup card off the display, so that a stray press could not remove the pairing code while you were typing it into your phone. That left no way out at all: the window had to run its five minutes.

Holding OK / BOOT for two seconds now closes the setup window as well as opening it, the way holding Up both holds and releases the picture. Short presses still leave that card alone.

Compatibility and installation

  • Settings and pairing from 0.5.x are kept. Nothing else changed: same screens, same languages, same renderer output.
  • Update as before: write the application at 0x20000 only. The partition table is unchanged.
  • The image is 3 764 224 bytes; 364 544 bytes remain free in the application slot.

emini Home 0.5.1

Chinese on the screen, an "emini" card under the button, three gestures on the side buttons, and a refresh that really refreshes.

Chinese as a display language

  • A reader in China wrote that the screens still showed English. They now speak Simplified Chinese: 113 phrases across all five screens, the emini card and the setup card, the date written as 9月15日 · 22:46, and air quality, UV and pollen named in Chinese.
  • The font carries the whole of GB 2312 (level 1 and 2, 6 874 glyphs at four sizes), so headlines and notes in Chinese draw without gaps. A build gate checks every phrase against the font and every Chinese frame against the glyphs actually drawn: a label that had no glyph would appear as ?, and none does.
  • Choose the language in the phone panel (English, Polski, 中文) or on the device: hold the lower side button for five seconds to step to the next one.
  • English remains the fallback. Anything not translated shows English words, never boxes.

The emini card

  • A short press on OK / BOOT now shows a card about the device for two minutes: the battery with an estimate of how long the charge lasts, a week of battery readings, the number of pictures drawn, hours awake, downloads and the time it takes to draw and to refresh, with a QR code to emini.ink. Press again to send it away.
  • The counters live in their own record in the device's own storage and are written every thirty minutes, so the flash sees little.
  • The card replaced language switching as the default job of that button; the language moved to the panel and to the gesture above. A device updating from 0.5.0 with the old setting reads it as the card.

The side buttons hold

  • Up held for two seconds holds the picture where it is; hold again and the automatic changes run.
  • Down held for two seconds and let go asks every source for fresh data.
  • Down held for five seconds steps to the next display language.
  • Presses are no longer lost while a picture is being drawn. A full refresh of this panel takes about 25 seconds, and until now the device stopped watching the buttons for all of it: a hold begun during a refresh was measured from the wrong moment and came out as a short press, which switched the screen instead. The buttons are now watched throughout.
  • The lower button shares its line with the board's power key, so a dip shorter than 150 ms counts as noise rather than as letting go.

Refresh

  • "Refresh now" never fetched anything. The request was recorded in three places — the side button, the round button and the panel — and nothing ever read it: the sources were downloaded only when their ordinary schedule came due. A deliberate refresh now makes those sources due at once.
  • The footer counts "Checked …" from the moment the device asked, not from the age of the content. A provider that answers "not modified" keeps its content, and the line used to stay where it was, so a refresh looked like nothing.
  • A refresh asked for by hand always draws the screen again, even when the picture comes out identical, so a press is never silent.

First run

  • The setup card now disappears together with the pairing window instead of outliving it, and a press no longer takes the pairing code off the screen while that window is open.
  • Quiet hours no longer block the first picture after setup.
  • Factory settings: one screen (weather), a fifteen-minute pause after a press. The panel offers the phone's time zone while pairing.

Compatibility and installation

  • Settings and pairing from 0.5.0 are kept, including the brush and the screen order.
  • Update as before: write the application at 0x20000 only. The partition table is unchanged.
  • The image is 3 763 952 bytes; 364 832 bytes remain free in the application slot.

emini Home 0.5.0

Choose a tag to compare

@fiedoruk fiedoruk released this 16 Sep 07:01

emini Home 0.5.0

Two new screens, a brush of your choice and a renderer measured on the panel itself.

New screens

  • Sky. Sunrise, sunset, civil twilight, the length of the day and its change since yesterday, the Moon's phase with the days to the next full or new Moon. Everything is computed on the device from the saved location (NOAA solar equations, Meeus for the Moon; checked against the US Naval Observatory to within 33 seconds); nothing is downloaded. Polar day and polar night are handled. Three compositions: Print (the sunset or sunrise time in large type, a warm dome with the sun, the 24-hour strip), Rhythm (the sun's height over the day, stars at night, the Moon), Atlas (the Moon with a soft terminator).
  • Air. European air quality index, PM2.5 for the next 24 hours, PM10, US AQI, the UV index with a sunscreen hint and, in Europe, alder, birch, grass and mugwort pollen, from the Open-Meteo Air Quality API (CC BY 4.0). Fetched once an hour and only while the screen is switched on; the device sends the saved coordinates, cut to four decimal places, to that one host and nowhere else. Three compositions: Print (the index, 24 hourly bars on a warm scale, the UV sun, the pollen tiles), Rhythm (the PM2.5 curve with the UV curve), Atlas (a 24-hour dial with a glow in the middle). In the panel you choose the headline number: European index, US AQI or PM2.5.
  • Both screens are off by default; settings from 0.4.x load unchanged, with Sky and Air at the end of the order.

Renderer 2

  • Tones are drawn through a 64 × 64 blue-noise mask instead of a fixed 4 × 4 grid: ramps without bands, skies without a mesh.
  • Three pigments in one point (mix3): sunsets and glows run paper → yellow → red → black.
  • A halftone screen: dots that grow with the tone, each pigment at its own angle so they do not moiré.
  • Brush. Settings → Appearance now has a brush: grain (blue noise, the default), halftone dots, or the ordered grid of 0.3–0.4. Line-based screens were tried on the device and dropped: on narrow strips and thin bars they read as broken stripes rather than texture.
  • The panel was measured with test cards on a real NOTE4C: yellow needs two pixels to exist at all, colour on paper spreads by 4–8 points and on black shrinks by 5–6, blue noise is about 1.8 times as visible as an ordered grid at one metre. The rules are in the repository's design notes and the renderer follows them.

Network

  • The station scans and joins on channels 1–13, not only 1–11 of the world-safe default; European routers that pick channel 12 or 13 were reported as "network not found". The country then follows the access point.
  • Every Wi-Fi disconnection is logged with its reason code and class.
  • Over the attached USB cable the maintenance protocol gained scan and networks, the same scan the setup panel runs.

Panel

  • Five screens in the collection with Move earlier/later, the day rhythm chooses among the enabled ones, and each new screen has its own page: Sky says that nothing is downloaded; Air names Open-Meteo and lets you pick the headline number.
  • /api/status reports the Air source; /api/refresh accepts air.

Installing from the browser

  • There is now a web installer at esp32ai.me/install: open it in
Chrome or Edge, plug the NOTE4C in over USB-C and give it the firmware, either as a file or as a
link to the file in this release. The terminal route with esptool is unchanged and still the one
the installation guide describes, backups and preflight check included.

Compatibility and installation

  • Settings and pairing from 0.4.x are kept. The cached weather and headline are re-downloaded once after the update, because the cache record grew with Air.
  • Update as before: write the application at 0x20000 only. The partition table is unchanged.
  • Going back from 0.5.0 to 0.4.x: 0.4.x rejects the five-screen settings record and starts with defaults; its first save then replaces the record for good. To keep a way back, note your settings (or export a recipe) before the update, or erase the settings area (home_nvs, 0x10000 for 0x10000 bytes) when you downgrade and set the device up again.
  • The user agent the device sends to the weather, news and air services now reads emini-home/0.5.

Privacy

  • New: Open-Meteo Air Quality sees the saved coordinates and the device's internet address while the Air screen is on. See PRIVACY.md.

emini Home 0.4.4

Choose a tag to compare

@fiedoruk fiedoruk released this 15 Sep 12:49

emini Home 0.4.4 lets you choose what the short press of OK / BOOT does.

What's new

  • The OK / BOOT button, your way. In the panel, under Settings → Preferences, Short press of OK / BOOT offers four jobs: switch the display language (as before, and still the default), check for updates now (the forecast and the headline), hold the current screen (press again to resume; the length is the manual pause setting), or open the setup window with the Wi-Fi name, password and pairing code. Holding OK / BOOT for 2 seconds always opens the setup window.
  • Settings saved by earlier versions keep the language job; a recipe from an earlier version is accepted as it is.

Nothing else changed since 0.4.3 (clock only after the internet sets it, pixel fonts for small text, Simplified Chinese, feeds with stylesheet instructions). The installation and update steps are the same.

Tested on one NOTE4C. Read the status and follow the installation guide. Its preflight check compares your flash backups with the tested unit and tells you to stop if your device's boot data differs. It cannot tell a NOTE4 from a NOTE4C, and only the four-colour NOTE4C is supported.

Known limits

  • The panel uses HTTP on your local network, and settings are stored on the device without encryption.
  • Chinese covers GB 2312 level 1; a rarer character is drawn as ?.
  • Phone setup has been done end to end from an iPhone. Android phones have not been tried yet.
  • Battery life has not been measured, and there is no deep sleep yet.
  • Going back to the factory firmware has not been tried on a real unit. Going back to 0.4.1 or 0.4.0 keeps your settings.
  • Updates are installed over USB; there is no over-the-air update.

Security limits: SECURITY.md. Please report vulnerabilities privately through security advisories.

emini Home 0.4.3

Choose a tag to compare

@fiedoruk fiedoruk released this 15 Sep 12:27

emini Home 0.4.3 fixes a clock problem seen after a restart: the footer could say "Age unknown · check time" on every screen for several minutes.

What's new

  • The clock counts only once the internet has set it. After a restart, the ESP32 carries the time over from its internal RTC, which can be minutes off. Home fetched the forecast and the headline with that time, then the SNTP sync moved the clock back, and the data looked as if it came from the future: "Age unknown · check time" on the display and "Older data" in the panel until the next fetch. Now Home waits for the first SNTP sync before it trusts the clock, fetches anything or draws times; the first picture after a restart is drawn without a clock and drawn again a few seconds later. This has been the case since 0.3.1; it shows only after a restart or power-up.

Nothing else changed since 0.4.2 (pixel fonts for small text, Simplified Chinese, feeds with stylesheet instructions). Settings saved by earlier versions are kept, and the installation and update steps are the same.

@fiedoruk fiedoruk released this 15 Sep 11:54

emini Home 0.4.2 changes one thing, suggested by a NOTE4C owner after 0.4.0: the small text is now drawn with pixel fonts.

What's new

  • Crisper small text. Labels, the footer lines, the device name and the weather details (the 12 and 16 px sizes) use the TRMNL12 Bold and TRMNL16 Bold pixel fonts, designed dot by dot for e-paper at exactly these sizes, instead of a vector typeface rounded to whole pixels. Strokes are even, and Polish letters keep their marks. Everything larger stays in Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, and Chinese text is unchanged.
  • The fonts come from the TRMNL framework (Heavyweight Digital Type Foundry for TRMNL, v1.002, SIL Open Font License 1.1). Thank you for pointing there.

Nothing else changed: settings saved by 0.4.0 or 0.4.1 are kept, and the installation and update steps are the same.

@fiedoruk fiedoruk released this 15 Sep 11:24

emini Home 0.4.1 is a small update to the first public release, with two changes asked for by the first NOTE4C owners who installed 0.4.0. Thank you for the reports.

What's new

Display

  • Headlines and notes in Simplified Chinese. Noto Sans CJK glyphs for the 3 755 most common characters (GB 2312 level 1), CJK punctuation and full-width forms, at the four poster sizes (30, 22, 16 and 12 px). Lines break between characters, and closing punctuation such as , or 。 never starts a line. Weather and panel text stay in English or Polish.
  • The precipitation line ("Dry until 21:00", "Rain from 18:00") skips hours that have already passed, so an older forecast no longer names a time that is over.

Feeds

  • Feeds that start with a processing instruction such as <?xml-stylesheet …?> are accepted; 0.4.0 rejected them as malformed. An unterminated instruction is still rejected.

In turn (composition rotation)

  • Waits for a valid clock: without internet time the display no longer redraws every interval through the night.
  • Respects the manual pause after a button press or Show now, and quiet hours.
  • Choosing In turn, or shortening its interval, no longer redraws the display before you tap Show now.
  • On a screen that has no data yet, Down and Up move straight to the next screen instead of stepping through three identical compositions.

Phone panel

  • The minutes field for In turn is hidden when no screen uses it, and a value left in it can no longer block Save.
  • A rejected save shows the real reason; 0.4.0 could claim that the firmware did not support In turn.
  • The panel refuses what the device refuses: an empty device name, a feed address with @, #, a space or a backslash, and quiet hours that start and end at the same minute.
  • The composition interval sits under the composition choice, with room between it and the hint.

The application image is larger (2.7 MiB, of the 3.9 MiB slot) because of the Chinese glyphs. Installation and update steps are unchanged: settings saved by 0.4.0 are kept.

Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean are not included.
  • Phone setup has been done end to end from an iPhone. Android phones have not been tried yet.
  • Battery life has not been measured, and there is no deep sleep yet.
  • Going back to the factory firmware has not been tried on a real unit. Going back from 0.4.1 to 0.4.0 keeps your settings.
  • Updates are installed over USB; there is no over-the-air update.

Security limits: SECURITY.md. Please report vulnerabilities privately through security advisories.
