Parser Combinators for the Pragmatic Programmer
Parsers are an indispensable tool when working with any sort of data. They allow you to transform input into a data structure that a computer can manipulate. Parser Combinators are a technique that speeds up the development of parsers. Gone are the days of brittle hand-written parsers or generating parsers from an external domain specific language. Instead combine small and simple parsers into parsers that parse the data you are interested in. This session will explain what parser combinators, how to build and and use a parser generator framework. Participants will walk away with a solid understanding of and hands-on experience with parser combinators.
We have prepared material that will guide participants through a series of exercises. Each set of exercises is preceded by an explanation of a certain topic relevant to parser combinators. The overarching theme is the understanding of Parser Combinators and the creation of a parser combinator framework.
To hone the new found skills of the participants small projects are suggested that make use of the freshly minted parser combinator framework. Throughout the workshop we encourage reflection by sharing progress and discussing the decisions that are being made.
