Snipping Tool UL 0.3.27 preview
Copy that knows what is on your clipboard, drag your snip into other apps, snip the same area again, and hide private info in one click.
What's new
- Copy shows the truth. It reads Copied while the clipboard holds your snip exactly as shown, and Copy after you edit or another app copies something.
- Drag into any app. Press Copy and drag into Explorer, a chat or an email to drop the image as a file. A plain click still copies. On a pinned snip, Ctrl+drag.
- Same area again. Your capture shortcut plus Alt (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S by default), or the tray menu, snips the previous area with no picker.
- Size while you select. The picker shows the exact width and height.
- Hide private info (Tools menu) pixelates emails, phone, card and account numbers, IP addresses and keys, as one undo step. It uses Windows' built-in text recognition and never uploads anything. Check the result before sharing.
- Hold Space and click-drag to pan, for trackpads without a middle button.
- A cleaner editor, and the image reaches the clipboard sooner.

Snipping Tool UL 0.3.26 preview
Faster snips.
| Median, same busy PC, three 4K monitors | 0.3.26 | 0.3.25 |
|---|---|---|
| Hotkey to selection screen | 141 ms | 241 ms |
| Release to image on clipboard | 54 ms | 83 ms |
| Release to editor open | 94 ms | 127 ms |
| Peak memory during a snip | 211 MB | 288 MB |
What changed
- The screen is captured once and drawn as it is. Only the area you select is converted, after you let go.
- Your snip goes on the clipboard before anything else happens, including freeing the frozen screen and opening the editor.
- Hotkey snips no longer wait for a screen refresh when no Snipping Tool UL window was showing. They still wait right after you close one of its windows, so it never shows up in your snip.
All 381 automated tests pass, and every snip in the live test matched the screen pixel for pixel. Release checks
Download the ZIP, unzip it, and run snipping-tool-ul.exe. No installer needed.
Snipping Tool UL 0.3.25 preview
A small one: About now has a Support on Ko-fi button. If Snipping Tool UL saves you time, it's a way to say thanks. It just opens ko-fi.com/finalpantasy in your browser.
Everything else is the same as 0.3.24: same fixes, same alignment pass, same optional weekly update check. 378 automated tests pass. Release checks
Download the ZIP, unzip it, and run snipping-tool-ul.exe. No installer needed.
Snipping Tool UL 0.3.24 preview
A polish release: six bug fixes, controls lined up properly, less memory, and an optional update check.
Fixed
- A possible crash when minimizing the editor from the keyboard with the right-click menu open.
- Right-clicking while typing text could act on a different annotation.
- Snips dragged to the right or bottom edge of the screen lost the last row or column of pixels.
- The shortcut recorder refused Ctrl+Shift+number, and number keys on French-style keyboards.
- Switching tools mid-drag left a ghost shape, and the eyedropper could pick colors from outside the image.
- A failed copy from History now tells you why.
Better
- Buttons, icons and labels that sat 1 to 8 pixels off centre are lined up in every window, in light and dark mode, at 100% and 150% scaling.
- The editor uses about 5 MB less memory (33 MB less on a 4K screen). Copy, Save, Upload and Pin use half the peak memory when there are no annotations.
- Copying a snip prepares the image before opening the clipboard, so other apps never find the clipboard locked or empty mid-copy.
New: weekly update check
Once a week at most, when the app starts, it asks GitHub whether a newer version exists and shows an "Update available" link. It sends nothing about you or your snips and never downloads anything. Turn it off in Settings > General.
377 automated tests pass. Live snip tests on Windows 11 with three 4K monitors: 39 of 40 exact; one test snip produced no clipboard image and could not be reproduced in 20 more tries. Release checks
Download the ZIP, unzip it, and run snipping-tool-ul.exe. No installer needed.
Snipping Tool UL 0.3.23 preview
Region snips now end exactly where you release the mouse. Earlier versions could grab a larger area if the pointer was still moving as you let go. Start on login also stays on the newest installed version when an older copy is still running.
Measured against Microsoft Snipping Tool 11.2608.41.0 on the same Windows 11 PC (three 4K monitors at 150%, 30 runs each, medians):
| Snipping Tool UL | Windows Snipping Tool | |
|---|---|---|
| Hotkey to selection screen | 155 ms | 355 ms |
| Release to image on clipboard | 50 ms | 76 ms |
| Memory while capturing | 29 MB | 484 MB |
| Launch to window | 47 ms | 235 ms |
| Size on disk | 10 MB | about 420 MB |
Method, limits and full results: PERFORMANCE.md. Verification: 358 automated tests pass; release checks.
Download and extract the ZIP, then run snipping-tool-ul.exe. No installer needed. To update an installed copy, open the new exe and use Settings > Windows > Use as my Snipping Tool.
Snipping Tool UL 0.3.22 preview
Draw beyond the image without losing annotation edges. The canvas grows with white space and shrinks when marks move inward, resize or are deleted. Undo and redo restore the matching canvas; Copy, Save, Upload and Pin include the complete result.
Fixed fractional pixelation and spotlight regions changing source pixels after expansion, corrected pin positioning with added margins and negative monitor coordinates, and added visible errors when an oversized canvas cannot be exported.
Verification: 348 headless tests passed, including 20 canvas regressions, 72 alpha/effect combinations and 180 cached-versus-fresh render transitions. Remapped Windows build, mocked installer, privacy and package hashes verified. Native mouse/clipboard acceptance remains pending isolation.
Download and extract the Windows x64 ZIP, then launch snipping-tool-ul.exe. Portable use needs no installer; settings and startup preferences are retained. Optional current-user installation is available in Settings > Windows. This release does not install itself automatically.

Upload now acknowledges your click before preparing the image. The button shows progress and a larger card directly underneath displays the share link and confirms Link copied to clipboard. If uploading succeeds but copying does not, Copy link retries the existing link without uploading again. Failures show Retry.
The feedback card blocks clicks from reaching the image underneath. Close it or press Escape to dismiss it; an open menu receives Escape first. New captures and later edits clear old feedback, and stale completion cannot display a prior image's result on a new capture.
Light mode remains the default, with dark available. The compact empty launcher, configurable hotkeys/timers, frozen capture, annotations, immediate screenshot copying and no-setup image sharing remain included. The GitHub README stays the project home; the separate site and video remain withdrawn.

Extract Snipping-Tool-UL-0.3.21-Windows-x64.zip, then run snipping-tool-ul.exe. Optional current-user installation is included. Existing users can Quit UL fully from the tray and reopen it from Start after installing the update.
Verification
328 locked offline headless tests passed; 0 failed, 3 manual checks ignored. Light/dark feedback layouts were inspected at minimum size and 150% DPI. The published executable is byte-for-byte identical to the verified installed 0.3.21 build. Public files, commit identity, archive entries and downloaded assets are hash-checked.
Pictures are clearly labelled app-code renders using sample content and URLs, approved instead of new native screenshots. No live image upload, clipboard operation or working-desktop test was performed. Native perceived latency, live provider behavior, mixed-DPI and broader interactive workflows remain pending isolation. This is a preview, without a verified speed comparison against Windows Snipping Tool.

Light mode is now the default, with dark mode still available. The empty launch window is a compact capture toolbar with the registered screenshot shortcut below it. Menus expand temporarily and collapse on dismissal. Completed captures request the foreground after the preview's first frame; UL stays hidden during capture.
The GitHub README is the project home. It uses clearly labelled light-mode app-code renders with fictional sample content, approved instead of new desktop screenshots. The separate product site and rejected video are withdrawn.
Extract Snipping-Tool-UL-0.3.19-Windows-x64.zip, then run snipping-tool-ul.exe. Optional current-user installation is included; close-to-tray and full Exit remain configurable.
323 headless tests passed, with 3 manual checks ignored. Formatting, mocked installer, remapped release build, identity scans, archive hashes and quiet installation read-back passed. Native mixed-monitor workflows, window resizing, foreground/capture exclusion, paste, timers, live uploads and full interactive resource acceptance remain pending isolation. No speed comparison against Windows Snipping Tool is claimed.
