Onset 1.0.5

@firatkarakas firatkarakas released this 03 Oct 16:11

Onset 1.0.5

Connects to servers on a single UDP port. Onset Host 1.0.2 needs this version; older servers keep working.

Changes

  • One port for everything. With Onset Host 1.0.2, sign-in, chat, files, voice and screen sharing all reach the server on one UDP port. The owner forwards one port instead of three, and your connection keeps one path open instead of three. Chat and files travel over QUIC on that port, encrypted with TLS 1.3 and checked against the same server identity as before, so saved servers and invites keep working.
  • Older servers still work. Servers running Onset Host 1.0.1 or earlier are reached as before, over TCP and their own voice and screen ports. Onset finds the right way by itself.
  • A clear message when UDP is blocked. If a server answers only over TCP, Onset says that its UDP port is not reachable from your network, instead of a general connection error.

Install

  • Onset 1.0.0 to 1.0.4 offer this update inside the app (Settings → Updates), and Onset 1.0.2 and later also find it on their own within a few hours. In the Microsoft Store edition, the Store delivers it.
  • Or download Onset-1.0.5-x64.msi from this release and run it. It upgrades earlier versions in place and keeps your saved servers, sign-in and settings.
  • Update before your server does: Onset Host 1.0.2 asks older versions of the app to update.

Security

  • Updates are verified against the signing key built into the app before they are installed.
  • Your saved sign-in is protected with Windows DPAPI for your Windows account.
  • The installer is not Authenticode-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn. Check the file against SHA256SUMS:
    Get-FileHash .\Onset-1.0.5-x64.msi -Algorithm SHA256
  • The project runs no servers. The app talks only to the servers you add, and to GitHub for updates.

Onset 1.0.4

Voices reach you sooner, and the strip is simpler. Works with the same servers as 1.0.3.

Changes

  • Voices arrive sooner. When someone started talking, Onset kept a 40 ms safety margin for as long as they spoke. It now plays the start of their speech up to a tenth faster, without changing how their voice sounds, until that margin is used up. On a good connection voices reach you about 30 ms sooner, on an unsteady one about 15 ms. When the connection gets worse, Onset slows playback just as gently to build the margin back up, instead of leaving a gap.
  • A simpler strip. The call sits in the middle of the strip, with the microphone and headphones buttons on it and the number of unread messages on its corner. On the right are Settings, minimize and close.
  • Where things moved. Screen sharing starts from the panel's Screen tab, or with your sharing shortcut. To leave a call, use the red Leave button under the call in the panel, or right-click the voice room. Disconnect and Administration are under the server button, Quit Onset is in Settings and in the tray menu, and Sign out is in Profile. The bell and the More menu are gone.
  • One set of shortcuts. Onset's fixed keys are gone except Esc: M, K, E, Space, Ctrl+K (and with it the command palette), Ctrl+F, Ctrl+, and Alt+↑/↓. Calls follow only the shortcuts you choose in Settings → Shortcuts that work everywhere, which work in Onset too. If you used Space for push-to-talk, choose a key in Audio & Video; until then your microphone stays shut, and Onset reminds you.

Install

  • Onset 1.0.0 to 1.0.3 offer this update inside the app (Settings → Updates), and Onset 1.0.2 and later also find it on their own within a few hours. In the Microsoft Store edition, the Store delivers it.
  • Or download Onset-1.0.4-x64.msi from this release and run it. It upgrades earlier versions in place and keeps your saved servers, sign-in and settings.

Security

  • Updates are verified against the signing key built into the app before they are installed.
  • Your saved sign-in is protected with Windows DPAPI for your Windows account.
  • The installer is not Authenticode-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn. Check the file against SHA256SUMS:

Onset 1.0.3

A small update with a privacy fix. Calls, chat and screen sharing work as in 1.0.2, with the same servers.

Changes

  • Muted audio stays on your PC. Onset sends the 40 ms just before your first word, so its start is not cut off. That buffer also took in what the microphone heard while you were muted, or while the push-to-talk key was up. If you unmuted or pressed the key and started talking at once, up to 20 ms of that audio was sent. Audio heard while muted is no longer kept or sent.
  • No repeated fragment after a short pause. When a pause lasted just over a quarter of a second, 10 ms from the start of your previous sentence could be sent again at the start of the next one.
  • Lighter on the CPU during calls. The microphone thread now wakes when audio arrives instead of checking every millisecond: about 4 ms of CPU for every second of a call becomes under 1 ms.

Install

  • Onset 1.0.0 to 1.0.2 offer this update inside the app (Settings → Updates), and Onset 1.0.2 also finds it on its own within a few hours. In the Microsoft Store edition, the Store delivers it.
  • Or download Onset-1.0.3-x64.msi from this release and run it.

    Get-FileHash .\Onset-1.0.3-x64.msi -Algorithm SHA256

Onset 1.0.2

Shortcuts that keep working while you are in a game, a tidier strip with its close button back, an emoji picker and reactions, downloads that pick up where they stopped, and cleaner call audio. Reactions need Onset Host 1.0.1 on the server; everything else works with Onset Host 1.0.0 too.

Changes

  • Shortcuts that work everywhere. Push to talk, push to mute, toggle mute, toggle deafen, start or stop sharing, and show or hide Onset now work while Onset is behind a game, minimized or in the tray. Set them in Settings → Shortcuts that work everywhere (push to talk is also in Audio & Video). A shortcut can be a single key, up to four keys together, or the middle or a side mouse button.
  • Your keys stay yours. Onset watches only the keys you have set, and a key you set still reaches the game or app you are using. Onset no longer sets any shortcut on its own: 1.0 took Play/Pause and Stop by default, so music players stopped answering them. Shortcuts you chose in 1.0 are carried over; if one uses a key this version cannot read, Onset tells you which, so you can set it again.
  • Push to talk lets go gently. The microphone stays open for a moment after you release the key, so the end of a word is not cut off. 120 ms by default, adjustable from 0 to 500 ms in Audio & Video.
  • A tidier strip. The server address, the ping and the Leave button are off the strip. Click the call to open the panel. When you are not in a call, Join voice opens the room list so you can pick the room yourself. The address shows when you point at the server button and at the top of the More menu, the ping is in the panel, and leaving a call is in More.
  • The close button is back. It puts Onset in the tray, and your call keeps going. To make it quit Onset instead, turn off Close button keeps Onset in the tray in Settings; Alt+F4 follows the same setting.
  • Emoji picker in the message box, with search, categories and the emoji you used last. Win + . still opens Windows' own panel with every emoji.
  • Reactions. React to a message from its row or with the + under it. Click a reaction to add or take back yours, and point at it to see who reacted.
  • Downloads resume. If the connection drops during a download, Onset waits for it to come back and asks for the rest of the file instead of failing.
  • Fewer tiny gaps in voices. When someone stopped talking, the last of their audio could reach your speakers a moment late; on an unsteady connection that left a 10 ms hole, sometimes inside a word. Audio that has already arrived is now queued a little ahead. Speaker gaps in Call diagnostics now counts only real holes in someone's voice, not the end of their sentence.
  • Better sound on 44.1 kHz devices. Headsets and speakers that run at 44.1 kHz instead of 48 kHz now get proper sample-rate conversion: the top of the range is no longer dulled, and no false tones are folded into it.
  • Updates while Onset is running. Onset now checks every few hours, not only when it starts. A new version is not announced during a call; it appears when the call ends and installs only when you press Restart.

Install

  • Onset 1.0.0 and 1.0.1 offer this update inside the app (Settings → Updates). In the Microsoft Store edition, the Store delivers it.
  • Or download Onset-1.0.2-x64.msi from this release and run it. It upgrades 1.0.0 and 1.0.1 in place and keeps your saved servers, sign-in and settings.

Security

  • Updates are verified against the signing key built into the app before they are installed.

Onset 1.0.1

A maintenance release that gets Onset ready for the Microsoft Store. Calls, chat and screen sharing work as in 1.0.0, and 1.0.0 and 1.0.1 work with the same servers.

Changes

  • Ready for the Microsoft Store. The same app can now run as a Store package, listed as Onset Voice. In that edition the Store delivers updates, and Start with Windows uses Windows' own startup setting (Settings → Apps → Startup).
  • Publisher name. The installed-apps list in Windows now shows "Onset" as the publisher.
  • License. The license covers the version it ships with. Later versions may be offered under different terms, and the names Onset and Onset Host and the logo are not licensed. This version stays free to use.
  • Third-party notices. The notices installed with the app now list every open-source package compiled into it.
  • Website: https://onsetvoice.com

Install

  • Onset 1.0.0 offers this update inside the app (Settings → Updates).
  • Or download Onset-1.0.1-x64.msi from this release and run it. It upgrades 1.0.0 in place and keeps your saved servers, sign-in and settings.

Security

  • Updates are verified against the signing key built into the app before they are installed.
  • Your saved sign-in is protected with Windows DPAPI for your Windows account.
  • The installer is not Authenticode-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn. Check the file against SHA256SUMS:

Onset 1.0.0

The first release of Onset: a desktop app for group voice calls, text rooms and screen sharing on a server that you or a friend runs. It lives as a slim strip on the edge of your screen, and your call keeps running while you work in other windows. It connects to an Onset Host server.

Highlights

  • Invites with a built-in fingerprint. Paste an invite from the server's control panel (host:port#<fingerprint>) into Server address. The app accepts only the server with that exact identity, even on the first connection.
  • Pinned server identity. Every connection is HTTPS/WSS. A server's identity is remembered, and if it ever changes, the app refuses to connect and shows the remembered and presented fingerprints side by side.
  • New encrypted voice protocol (GCA3). ChaCha20-Poly1305 with keys for each session and replay protection.
  • Ping on the strip. The strip shows your round trip to the server. The panel adds jitter-buffer depth and packet loss while you are in a call.
  • Screen-sharing presets: 720p, 1080p or Source, at 15, 30 or 60 fps.
  • People controls. Per-person volume, "Mute for me only", direct messages and pings are in each person's menu. Direct messages are text conversations.
  • Messages, links and code. Messages from one person within five minutes are grouped. Links open in your browser, inline code is shown as code, and Reply, Edit and Delete appear when you point at a message or reach it with the keyboard.
  • Sturdier audio engine. Capture, processing and playback are separated, so a slow moment in one part does not stall your microphone.

Install

  • Download Onset-1.0.0-x64.msi from this release and run it.
  • Updates are offered inside the app (Settings → Updates).

Security

  • Updates are verified against the signing key built into the app before they are installed.
  • Your saved sign-in is protected with Windows DPAPI for your Windows account.
  • The installer is not Authenticode-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn. Check the file against SHA256SUMS:
