Fixed

• The pinch gesture stopped working after the Mac had been closed or left alone for a while. macOS recreates the trackpad device when you close the lid, during background wake-ups, and when you open it again. Liftoff was still listening to the old device, so pinching did nothing until Liftoff was restarted. Liftoff now notices the new device and reconnects to it on its own.

• Liftoff now updates itself. By default it checks for updates once a week, downloads new versions in the background and installs them while you're away from your Mac, so you never have to download a zip again. Your layout, settings and permissions stay as they are. Thanks to @eryajf for asking for this (#6).
• No pop-ups. When an update is found, a small dot appears on the menu bar icon and on the settings gear in Liftoff instead of a window interrupting you.
• You're in control. Settings → General → About has Check for updates weekly and Automatically download and install updates. Turn them off and Liftoff only goes online when you click Check for Updates….

Notes

• Updating from 1.3.3 or earlier: install this version manually one last time (download below, or brew upgrade --cask liftoff). From 1.4.0 on, updates install themselves.
• Updates are verified with an EdDSA signature before they're installed, and they're signed with the same certificate as before, so Accessibility and Screen Recording stay allowed.
• Liftoff collects nothing about you. Its only network use is checking for and downloading updates from GitHub.

• Built-in backgrounds: 6 gradients and 4 solid colors, picked from thumbnails in Settings. Dimming still applies, and light backgrounds switch to dark labels automatically.
• Sharp wallpaper: set blur to 0 and the background shows your wallpaper at the display's native resolution, with no blur.
• Your own picture is kept safe: Liftoff now keeps its own copy of the image you choose, so moving or deleting the original no longer breaks the background. You can also drag an image onto the Picture row in Settings.

Fixed

• The mouse wheel couldn't turn pages with smooth-scrolling tools. Logi Options+, Mos and similar tools turn wheel clicks into smooth scrolling, which Liftoff mistook for trackpad input and ignored. Each wheel flick now turns one page. Thanks to @eryajf for the report (#11).

Improved

• Settings no longer holds memory after you close it: the Settings window now runs as a separate process that quits when you close it, freeing all of its memory.

• Four-finger swipes between desktops could open Liftoff. If your fingers started spread wide, they naturally drew together as the swipe ended, and Liftoff read that as a pinch. It now tells the two apart by whether your whole hand is moving: a swipe never opens it, and pinching works as before. Thanks to @eryajf for the report (#10).
• Liftoff kept checking permissions after Settings was closed. It now checks only while the permissions section is on screen.

Improved

• Less memory: the blurred wallpaper background no longer loads Core Image and Metal for one small image.
• Faster typing in search: matching is quicker, and spell check and autocorrect are off in the search field (they were the wrong behavior there anyway).

• Quick, small pinch opened and closed right away. A fast pinch that didn't travel far could flash the launcher and snap back. Liftoff now also looks at how fast your fingers were moving when you let go, so a quick flick opens (or closes) it as you meant. Thanks to @eryajf for the report (#9).
• Blurry icons and app names. Icons are now drawn at exactly the size they're shown, and the grid and labels sit on whole pixels. With a Retina laptop and a non‑Retina external display, each display now gets icons sized for it.

• Settings window opened behind other apps. It now always comes to the front.
• Folder title slid in from the previous folder's spot when opening a folder. It now appears in place.
