Convert autogenerated sh script with env set to fish format

I have .profile generated by my software which sets up my environment in zsh/sh.

Is there any way of "converting on the fly" of those env setup for fish?
It's one of missing features for me, cause I use software which generates sh scripts.

as simple as this. I could write a grep /awk line to replace export to "set", but I really would like to just do it on the fly.

And to be honest.. it should be in interest of projects like fish to support such things as exports. It's as simple as setting an alias for set... I really think that you did great job writing this piece of software, but creating own shell language is pointless without at least some backward compatibility and it will be a BIG HEADACHE for people who will be interested in moving to fish.

fish does have support the alias POSIX-ism, which is a function that itself wraps a function. Could we do the same with export? There would be a few caveats:

1. The export foo=bar syntax is reminiscent of plain variable assignment foo=bar, which would be more difficult (and not desirable) to support. So this would only be for export.
2. Exported lists use colons - export PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin. The export fish function would have to parse the value to snip out the colons. (Not all variables actually want this, like DISPLAY, but most do).
3. .profile files that do anything other than just set variables to literal values will probably fail, i.e. if it contains backtick command substitutions. We'll likely never support most .profile files.

Despite all that I think export would be a nice addition.

Agree. Could these files have variable declarations without export? Like:

In this case a command should also be provided to set 'tmppath'.

The foo=bar syntax doesn't fit naturally into fish's command-arguments syntax. Supporting that would either require a POSIX compat layer or a hack.

If we wanted to go that route, it would be nice to collect a sample of .profile files so we can see how many could be handled directly.

Ich have a hackish function which can execute any bash script (as long as this does not print anything) and automatically imports any given variables into fish. Seems like this has been addressed. We support a bash compatible export command (and setenv). There is also the bass extension.
