Playback, Transcoding, and Downloads
Use this guide to understand how playback, volume, and downloads work in WatchAmp.

When your Plex server is reachable, WatchAmp can stream music directly to Apple Watch. When streaming, WatchAmp will attempt to fast start music playback for supported codecs. If there is enough bandwidth and resources available, WatchAmp will then pre-cache upcoming tracks in the queue to ensure the best playback experience.
For best results:
- keep Apple Watch connected to Wi-Fi or cellular
- connect Bluetooth headphones before starting playback
- keep the Plex server awake and reachable
- enable Transcodes in WatchAmp's settings page
- use downloads when you know the network will be unreliable

Apple Watch natively supports AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless (ALAC), WAV, and AIFF audio codecs. Apple Watch does not support Direct Play for other formats like FLAC or OPUS. To play these files, you can enable Transcoding in WatchAmp's settings at Settings ➜ General ➜ Transcoding.

You can switch between 128 kbps and 256 kbps bitrates for transcodes in WatchAmp's Transcode Settings.
While WatchAmp does allow Plex's Direct Play for Apple supported codecs, Direct Play can be very bandwidth intensive and can sometimes starve watchOS network resources, especially on older devices. It is highly recommended to leave Transcoding enabled for WatchAmp playback.
Downloaded tracks play from Apple Watch storage. Local playback is useful when you are away from your Plex server, away from a reliable network, or in an area with poor cellular coverage.
Some tracks may be prepared as a local playable file before playback. This can make difficult tracks more reliable on Apple Watch.

Bluetooth headphones are recommended for music playback from Apple Watch. watchOS may require or strongly prefer a Bluetooth audio route for long-form audio. Not all Apple Watches support playback over their external speaker.
If playback does not start:
- Connect Bluetooth headphones to Apple Watch.
- Start the track again.
- Wait a moment for the route to connect.
- Try a downloaded track if streaming still does not start.

Use the Digital Crown or headphone controls to change volume.
The volume shown in WatchAmp follows Apple Watch volume. If your headphones change volume, WatchAmp updates to match it.
Downloads provide a local playback option.
Downloaded files are useful when:
- you expect to be offline
- the Plex server may not be reachable
- streaming is unreliable
- you want to reduce startup delays for specific tracks

When completed local downloads exist, WatchAmp can expose a Downloads library in the Library flow.
The Downloads library can include:
- Artists
- Albums
- Playlists
- All Downloads
If all downloaded music is removed, the Downloads library will no longer appear.
Use the Downloads screen to:
- review local tracks
- play downloaded tracks
- delete downloaded content
- confirm what is available offline
Deleting all downloaded tracks removes the local offline library.
- Download music before leaving Wi-Fi.
- If downloads are slow and your iPhone is nearby, disable Bluetooth on your iPhone. This forces communication with Apple Watch over WiFi.
- Open Downloads once before leaving to confirm the tracks are present.
- Keep Bluetooth headphones paired with Apple Watch.
- Leave enough free storage on Apple Watch for new downloads.
