Choose a tag to compare

@flaviocopes flaviocopes released this 08 Oct 08:24

Renamed the app to Skill Cabinet. Updated the app name, GitHub repository and download names.

Existing saved data stays available. The companion command keeps its existing name. In-app update links now use the renamed repository.

Install

Download Skill-Cabinet-1.5.0.zip, unzip it, and move Skill Cabinet.app to your Applications folder. This universal build supports Apple silicon and Intel Macs, is signed with my Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

You can also build the source locally with the instructions in the README, using free Xcode tools.

Skill Cabinet 1.4

@flaviocopes flaviocopes released this 03 Oct 09:47

Skill Cabinet 1.4 is signed with my Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

What's new

  • No more security warning. The first time you opened Skill Cabinet, macOS used to say it "could not verify Skill Cabinet is free of malware", and you had to click Open Anyway in System Settings. Now it opens like other apps you download: macOS asks if you're sure you want to open an app from the internet, and you click Open.
  • Nothing else changed. The skillscout command and its link stay the same.

Install

If you already use Skill Cabinet, it offers this update by itself. Click Install and Relaunch, or choose Skill Cabinet → Check for Updates… to get it right away.

Otherwise, download Skillscout-1.4.0.zip, unzip it, and drag Skill Cabinet to your Applications folder. It runs on macOS 15 Sequoia or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Skill Cabinet reads your skills and chats on your Mac, and keeps its own data in ~/Library/Application Support/Skillscout. Your chats leave your Mac only when you use the AI features, through the Codex or Claude Code CLI you're logged in to. Merging sends the two SKILL.md files the same way.

Skill Cabinet 1.3

Choose a tag to compare

@flaviocopes flaviocopes released this 01 Oct 19:18

Skill Cabinet 1.3 adds a filter to the toolbar, so you can list only your own skills, only the plugin ones, or only the ones built into Cursor and Codex. The 1.0 notes list everything else the app does.

What's new

  • Filter by source. A new menu next to Sort picks Your skills, Plugin skills, Built-in skills or All skills, and the sidebar counts follow it. It replaces the puzzle-piece toggle, which could only add the plugin and built-in skills to yours.

A skill you keep in your own folders stays under Your skills, even when a plugin has one with the same name. The filter is greyed out on Suggestions and Similar skills, since it doesn't change those lists.

Install

Already using Skill Cabinet? Choose Check for Updates… in the Skill Cabinet menu, and it installs 1.3 for you.

Otherwise, download Skillscout-1.3.0.zip, unzip it, and drag Skill Cabinet to your Applications folder. It runs on macOS 15 Sequoia or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Skill Cabinet isn't signed with an Apple Developer ID or notarized, so the first time you open it, macOS says it "could not verify Skill Cabinet is free of malware". Click Done, then either:

  • open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down to Skill Cabinet, and click Open Anyway.

The README has the details, including what to do on a work laptop. Updates installed from inside the app open without this prompt.

Skill Cabinet 1.2

Choose a tag to compare

@flaviocopes flaviocopes released this 01 Oct 14:16

Skill Cabinet 1.2 helps you tidy up your skills. It finds the ones that overlap and merges them with AI, and you can now edit and rename a skill right in the app. The 1.0 notes list everything else the app does.

What's new

  • Similar skills. A new list in the sidebar pairs the skills that read alike, with the words they share. Skill Cabinet compares the words on your Mac, without AI, and only pairs your own skills. Click They're different skills to hide a pair for good.
  • Merge with AI. Pick a pair and the name to keep, and Claude Code or Codex writes one SKILL.md from both. You can edit it before anything changes. The other skill goes to the Trash, its extra files come along, and the kept skill gets linked wherever the other one was, so no agent loses it.
  • Edit. Change a skill's SKILL.md in the app. Skill Cabinet saves it to every copy with the same text, and tells you when an agent changed the file while you were editing.
  • Rename. Skill Cabinet renames the skill's folders and links, and the name in its SKILL.md.
  • Toolbar buttons. Edit, Rename and Uninstall now sit in the toolbar, for the selected skill.
  • New commands. skillscout similar, skillscout rename and skillscout merge, with --dry-run to read the merged SKILL.md first.

After a rename or a merge, the chats that used the old name keep counting for the skill.

The draft editors no longer turn your quotes into curly quotes, or -- into a dash, when that macOS setting is on.

Install

Already using Skill Cabinet? Choose Check for Updates… in the Skill Cabinet menu, and it installs 1.2 for you.

Otherwise, download Skillscout-1.2.0.zip, unzip it, and drag Skill Cabinet to your Applications folder. It runs on macOS 15 Sequoia or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Skill Cabinet 1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@flaviocopes flaviocopes released this 30 Sep 19:12

Skill Cabinet 1.1 can uninstall skills. It moves a skill to the Trash, from every folder it lives in or from just one of them. The 1.0 notes list everything else the app does.

What's new

  • Uninstall. Click Uninstall this skill under Where it lives, right-click a skill in the list, or select it and press Delete. Skill Cabinet moves every copy in your skills folders to the Trash, links included, so you can put it back from there.
  • Remove from one folder. When a skill lives in more than one folder, Remove takes it out of just that one, which undoes an Add to. Before anything moves, Skill Cabinet tells you which agents will stop loading the skill.
  • skillscout uninstall. The same in your terminal. Add --from <tool> to remove only the copy in that agent's skills folder.

Plugin and built-in skills stay where they are, since their agents manage them.

Install

Already using Skill Cabinet 1.0? Choose Check for Updates… in the Skill Cabinet menu, and it installs 1.1 for you.

Otherwise, download Skillscout-1.1.0.zip, unzip it, and drag Skill Cabinet to your Applications folder. It runs on macOS 15 Sequoia or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Skill Cabinet 1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@flaviocopes flaviocopes released this 30 Sep 13:30

Skill Cabinet is a Mac app for the skills your coding agents load. It finds every skill on your Mac, shows which agents can see each one, and counts how often you use them.

What's in 1.0

  • 8 agents. Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Droid, Pi and Amp. Skill Cabinet knows which folders each one reads, so for every skill it tells you which agents load it.
  • Add to. One click links a skill into an agent that can't see it yet, so every agent loads the same SKILL.md.
  • Usage counts. It reads your local chats and counts the chats where an agent loaded each skill, by agent and by project. Unused lists the skills no chat touched in the last 60 days.
  • Skill ideas. Find repeated tasks asks Claude Code or Codex for the requests you keep typing, and drafts a SKILL.md for each one.
  • Explain with AI. Ask what a skill does, when the agent uses it, and what it needs to work.
  • The skillscout command. The same skills and counts in your terminal, with --json for scripts. Install it from the Skill Cabinet menu.
  • Updates. Skill Cabinet checks GitHub once a day, and installs new versions from inside the app.

Install

Download Skillscout-1.0.0.zip, unzip it, and drag Skill Cabinet to your Applications folder.
