Alpha 7 brings a refreshed interface, new ways to organize and read your email, a calendar agenda, and a substantial round of synchronization and memory improvements.

This release includes 264 commits since alpha 6. Here are the changes you'll notice most.

A refreshed workspace

  • New icons throughout the app, with consistent outlines and filled states for selected items.
  • Polished sidebars, menus, and settings, with animated folder accordions, clearer empty states, improved focus indicators, and better custom-theme contrast.
  • Resizable list panes in Mail, Contacts, and Files, so you can give lists or their detail views more room.
  • Storage usage in Settings, showing space used by mail, attachments, offline files, databases, and other local data. Account backups and verified database snapshots are available from the same page.

More control over your inbox

  • Profiles and account colors. Group accounts into profiles such as Work or Personal, assign colors, and display account color markers in the message list.
  • Nested mailboxes and labels. Organize folders and labels into expandable hierarchies, with improved account-specific organization.
  • Mail grouped by date. Browse collapsible sections such as Today, Yesterday, This week, and earlier months.
  • Sender identities. Choose a provider-supported From identity in the composer and set an account default, including verified Gmail Send As aliases.
  • Empty Trash and permanent deletion, with confirmation flows for destructive actions.
  • Improved recipient suggestions, including fixes that preserve learned recipients and suggestions from sent mail.

Reading and navigation

  • Independent message appearance. Let messages follow the app theme, or keep them light or dark independently. Your selected palette applies to HTML, plain text, and Reader mode, with a Show original colors option for the sender's original presentation.
  • Keyboard navigation for mail. Use Up/Down, Home/End, and Page Up/Page Down to move through messages; Enter to open; Space to select; and F6 to move between the list and reader. In the minimal layout, Escape returns to the list.
  • Email rendering fixes, including HTML table layout, font fallback, and emoji presentation, plus improvements to reader headers and controls.

Calendar

  • New agenda view, with a day-by-day event list, calendar filters, all-day and multi-day events, and a current-time marker.
  • CalDAV setup fixes on Android and improved handling of calendar and contact data.

Performance and synchronization

  • Progressive JMAP first sync. Messages now appear newest first as pages arrive, making the inbox available earlier while the rest of the initial synchronization continues.
  • Smaller JMAP mailbox requests, fetching only the properties the client uses.
  • Cached startup restored, showing your cached mailbox while local storage initializes.
  • Extensive memory and allocation work across mailbox refreshes and pagination, the composer and undo history, message parsing and rendering, image decoding, attachment handling, contact search, and file caches. This reduces unnecessary copying, temporary buffers, and oversized background working sets.
  • Expanded memory and performance probes to help measure startup, compose actions, mailbox paging, and rendering work in future changes.

Languages and reliability

  • Added Turkish, Simplified Chinese, German, French, and Russian translation catalogs, alongside updates to Spanish and other community translations.
  • Added a Simplified Chinese README and a community translation workflow through Weblate.
  • Improved IMAP account setup and sparse-mailbox synchronization, and decoupled SMTP dispatch from IMAP synchronization.
  • Added JMAP bearer-token support and redirected-host discovery, with fixes for snoozed messages.
  • Fixed bulk selection, collapsed mail groups, search pagination, focus handling, and composer state, along with Android icon and avatar issues.

Downloads and alpha notes

Desktop downloads are available for Linux x64, Windows x64, and macOS Apple silicon and Intel. Linux packages include AppImage, Debian, RPM, and Flatpak. An experimental Android arm64 test APK is also included. SHA256SUMS covers all downloads, and the release includes build-provenance attestations.

Flectar Mail remains an alpha release. HTML email rendering is experimental, and complex messages may still have layout issues. Please report problems, especially rendering, synchronization, and platform-specific regressions.

  • Gmail and Outlook sign-in require a bundled OAuth registration or your own app keys in Sign-in settings. IMAP/SMTP and JMAP do not require Google or Microsoft app keys; provider policies still apply.
  • Windows downloads are unsigned. macOS downloads are ad-hoc signed and are not notarized; macOS 14 or later is required. Updates are installed manually.
  • Flatpak is a sideloaded preview bundle, with no Flathub updates yet and close-to-tray disabled.
  • Android requires Android 8.0 or later. The APK is test-signed, not a production or Play Store build. Updating requires the same signing key; a different key may require uninstalling the previous app, which deletes its local data. Android OAuth needs registrations tied to the APK's signing identity.
  • iOS is not included in these release downloads; experimental archives remain available through manual workflow runs.
