Tools

Reference. For players, Game Masters, and builders who want to know what the server can do. No prerequisites — this page describes the tools; you don't need a running server to read it. You'll walk away with a complete catalog of every tool the base holonovel server registers, grouped by function.

The holonovel server registers 30 tools, 38 resources, and 5 prompts. Each tool is an action-discriminator: one tool name, with an action parameter that selects what it does. So where the old surface exposed create_character, set_lore_entry, and spec_health as separate tools, today those are manage_character (action: create), manage_lore (action: set), and manage_session (action: health). Installed ruleset packages register their own tools at runtime under a <slug>_ prefix (for example mothership_search_rules), so those aren't listed here — run manage_session (action: discover) or manage_ruleset (action: list) to see the live set for your server. Resources and prompts are summarized at the end.

Each entry names the tool, its actions, and what it does. Most mutation actions are Game Master-gated and read actions are badge-filtered — see Badges for the full access matrix.

Prompts

The server ships five prompts, surfaced in your client's prompt list:

  • intro — welcome and getting started.
  • badge_briefing — the current badge's full briefing: scene, lore, signals, and turn handoff.
  • session_zero — a guided agreement on tone, safety, and the crew before play.
  • novel_setup — a three-step wizard: characters, story source, session zero.
  • run_workflow — maps a natural-language intent to the right tool.

Resources

The server registers 38 resource surfaces for direct lookup — from novel://current and entity://{id} through room://{id}, npc://{id}, lore://{key}, world://map, audit://novel, codex://{id}, the guidance:// and synthesis:// surfaces, and the four MCP Apps UI surfaces (ui://character-sheet, ui://codex, ui://lore, ui://novel) added for MCP Apps clients. These are read-only views into campaign state; the tools above are how you change it.
