Release list
sub2utf v2.0.0
What's changed
sub2utf was deployed as a bare converter with nothing explaining what it was or how to use it. 2.0 wraps it in a site and redesigns both the web app and the desktop app.
A site around the app — https://sub2utf.org
- App — the converter, on a page that says what it's for
- How it Works — how encoding detection and UTF-8 conversion actually work
- Download — installers for each platform, always showing the current release
- FAQ — troubleshooting, why Plex needs UTF-8, what happens to your files
- Privacy — what the app does and does not do with your data
Redesign
- a new look across both the web app and the desktop app
- fonts and icons are bundled with the app, so the desktop app is fully styled offline and no page makes a request to any third party
- accessibility: a real modal settings dialog, and a keyboard-operable drop zone and FAQ accordion
Fixed
- a file wrongly auto-detected as UTF-8 was marked "skipped" and could not be converted even after you manually picked its encoding. Choosing a source encoding now makes such a file convertible again.
Under the hood
- Tailwind v4 replaces Pico CSS
- the desktop app builds separately from the site, so the native binary contains none of the website
Nothing about converting changed
Encoding detection, per-file encoding and language selection, and Plex output naming (movie.sr.srt) all behave exactly as in 1.2.0. Your saved settings carry over.
Downloads
Choose the DMG for macOS, MSI or setup EXE for Windows, and AppImage, DEB, or RPM for Linux.
The apps are unsigned, so each platform needs a nudge on first launch:
- macOS — run
xattr -cr /Applications/sub2utf.app, then open it - Windows — SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC": click "More info" → "Run anyway"
- Linux —
chmod +x sub2utf_2.0.0_amd64.AppImage
