@forhadkhan forhadkhan released this 18 Oct 10:38

Added

  • Right-click menu in the CSV table: insert a row above or below, insert a column
left or right, delete the row or the column. Shift+F10 or the Menu key opens it
from the keyboard, and right-clicking a row number works too.
  • File > Export Excel… saves a CSV table as an .xlsx workbook: bold, frozen header
row, column widths fitted to the content, every value kept as text.
  • A Copy button appears at the top-right of a code block when you hover it, in page
mode and in the rendered half of split mode. It copies the code only and never
ends up in the saved Markdown.
  • Notemark notices when an open file changes on disk and shows a bar with a Reload
button, like the default Ubuntu text editor. If you have unsaved changes the bar
says so, and nothing is reloaded behind your back. A deleted or moved file offers
Save As. File > Reload from Disk does it by hand.
  • Opening a file while Notemark is already running opens it as a tab in that window
instead of starting a second copy.

Changed

  • CSV toolbar: "Add row", "Add column", "Delete row" and "Delete column" now use
plus and minus icons. Delete row no longer removes the first data row when the
    header is selected.
  • Much faster: a window shows its document about four times sooner, a restored tab
opens in about a third of the time, and only the active tab loads at start-up.
  • Large files: Markdown is parsed in blocks, so a 150 KB file opens in about 0.3 s
and a 1 MB file in a couple of seconds instead of a minute or more. Switching
between modes no longer re-renders an unchanged document.
  • Editing a rendered page only converts the blocks you touched back to Markdown, so
the rest of the file stays exactly as you wrote it, and saving a large file is
    instant.
  • The CSV table draws only the rows in view, so large sheets scroll smoothly and
open at once. Typing in source mode and Export Excel no longer freeze the window
    on large files.

Fixed

  • Ctrl+Shift+N opens a window with a blank tab instead of an empty window.
  • The selected header cell in the CSV table is opaque, so rows no longer show
    through it while scrolling.

Added

  • Tabs: every file opens in its own tab with its own view, cursor, scroll
position and undo history. Open several files at once, reorder tabs, close with
    the button, middle-click or Ctrl+W, switch with Ctrl+Tab or Alt+1 to 9, and a
tab with unsaved changes asks before it closes.
  • New windows (Ctrl+Shift+N), opening files in a new window, and moving a tab to
    a new window.
  • CSV and TSV files open as an editable table with sorting, filtering, row and
column editing, pasting a block of cells and a raw-text view; "New CSV Table"
    in the menu.
  • Copy the document text, the file path (Ctrl+Shift+C) or the file itself, from
the menu and the tab's context menu.
  • A Settings dialog (Ctrl+,): theme, source editor font size, default view, split
layout, synchronised scrolling, showing the status bar, and reopening your files
on launch. The layout and scroll options moved here from the menu.
  • Files that were open when Notemark closed are reopened on the next launch.
  • tests/test_keys.py, which presses real keys through the X server to test the
    shortcuts end to end.
  • Four split layouts (editor left, right, top or bottom), a draggable divider that
remembers its position, and a synchronised-scrolling toggle.
  • Line and column in the status bar for source and split modes, and a reading-time
    estimate.
  • A signed APT repository at https://forhadkhan.github.io/notemark/apt, so
Notemark installs and updates through apt.
  • A documentation site at https://forhadkhan.github.io/notemark/, built from
docs/ and published with make pages.

Changed

  • The Save button uses a floppy-disk icon.
  • New application icon: an orange tile with a page and a Markdown heading mark,
legible on light and dark backgrounds.
  • The view (page, source or split) belongs to each tab. New tabs start in the view
chosen under Settings rather than in whichever one you used last.

Fixed

  • The dock and app grid showed a generic gear icon on Wayland. The desktop entry
is now named com.forhadkhan.Notemark.desktop to match the application id.
  • Tab nests a list item in page mode again. It produced a list inside a list that
Markdown could not express, so the nesting was lost on save.
  • Shift+Tab was ignored in page and source mode and moved the focus out of the
document, because WebKitGTK reports that key as "Unidentified".
  • Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Shift+Z and Ctrl+Y now undo and redo in page, source and split
modes (Ctrl+Y was not bound at all).
  • The source editor now fills its pane, as a monospace plain-text editor with light
and dark colours, in both source and split modes.

Notemark is a Notion-style Markdown editor for Linux. The rendered page is the
editor: you type into formatted text, Markdown shortcuts convert as you type,
and your notes stay as plain .md files on disk.

This is the first public release.

Highlights

  • Page mode. A WYSIWYG editor over Markdown. The page is never re-rendered
while you type, so the cursor and layout stay stable.
  • Markdown shortcuts. # heading, - bullet, 1. numbered item,
[] task, > quote, ``` code and --- rule. Enter on an empty line
leaves a list, quote or code block.
  • Source and split modes, with two-way synchronisation in split.
  • Light and dark themes, following the desktop preference on first launch.
  • Zoom from 50 to 300 percent, including Ctrl and the scroll wheel.
  • Clickable task checkboxes, inline formatting shortcuts, and export to a
    self-contained HTML file.

Debian and Ubuntu

sudo apt install ./notemark_0.1.0_all.deb

AppImage

chmod +x Notemark-0.1.0-x86_64.AppImage
./Notemark-0.1.0-x86_64.AppImage

Requirements

Python 3.8 or newer, PyGObject, GTK 3 and WebKitGTK 4.1. The Debian package
pulls these in automatically. The AppImage uses them from the host system and
prints the packages to install if they are missing.

Distribution Command
Debian, Ubuntu sudo apt install python3-gi gir1.2-gtk-3.0 gir1.2-webkit2-4.1
Fedora sudo dnf install python3-gobject gtk3 webkit2gtk4.1
Arch sudo pacman -S python-gobject gtk3 webkit2gtk-4.1
openSUSE sudo zypper install python3-gobject gtk3 libwebkit2gtk-4_1-0

Known limitations

  • A file you only read is never rewritten, but once you edit it in page mode the
whole document is re-serialised, so alternative syntax is normalised: *
bullets become -, setext headings become #, reference links become inline.
  • Tables render and can be edited cell by cell, but there is no table editing
    interface.
  • Typing **bold** as literal syntax is escaped rather than converted; use
Ctrl+B, or write in source mode.
