Frost 0.4.3

@kylezh kylezh released this 22 Oct 02:01

Fixed

  • On macOS 27, a new app's icon that macOS puts in Always Hidden, where it was neither drawn nor listed in the Frost
    Bar, now goes to Hidden, as on macOS 26. Icons present when you update count as seen and stay where they are.

@kylezh kylezh released this 21 Oct 23:49

Added

  • Rehide when you're done (Settings → Behavior, on by default): icons revealed in the menu bar hide again shortly
    (about 2 s) after a menu or popover you opened from them closes, or after you switch to another app; moving the
    pointer back into the menu bar keeps them shown. The rehide delay stays as the fallback.
  • On macOS 27, right-click and Control-click on an icon in the Frost Bar open its secondary menu, as on macOS 26.
    An ⌥-click arrives as a plain click there, because macOS 27 delivers menu bar clicks without modifier keys.
  • On macOS 27, when an app relaunches and its icon lands outside the section you set in Layout, Frost moves it back
    (Settings → Behavior → Keep icons in their sections). This briefly reveals the menu bar.

Fixed

  • The snowflake no longer ignores clicks on the desktop where the Settings window is open on the Layout tab behind
    other windows. The layout editor now gives the menu bar back until you return to Settings.
  • Clicking inside a popover opened from a revealed icon no longer hides the icons from under it.

Fixed

  • On macOS 27, section dividers now hide the configured icons within their bounded capacity, and the Frost Bar
    shows the icons assigned to Hidden (and Always Hidden with Option-click).
  • Clicking a hidden icon in the macOS 27 Frost Bar now moves it beside the snowflake, leaves the pointer on it and
    opens its native menu. After the menu closes and the pointer leaves, the icon returns to its original slot.
  • Clicking the snowflake again on macOS 27 closes the Frost Bar instead of immediately reopening it.

Changed

  • Reduced the time spent rearranging the macOS 27 menu bar during click forwarding. Its temporary expansion is
    still visible; macOS 26 keeps its existing behavior.
  • Updated the macOS 27 demo to show a single snowflake click followed by opening an icon's menu and returning it.

Frost 0.4.0

@kylezh kylezh released this 10 Oct 14:50
e38a89f

Added

  • macOS 27 support using the same Frost Bar and Settings interface as macOS 26. Open icons through Accessibility
    and drag them in Layout to change their real menu bar order and remembered sections.
  • Optional Screen Recording adds real icon images on macOS 27. Images refresh when the Frost Bar opens and while
    editing; icons that cannot be captured keep their app icon.

Changed

  • On macOS 27, the Frost Bar lists menu bar icons without claiming a hidden-item count. Layout remembers the
    sections you arrange; macOS decides which icons fit in the menu bar. Secondary and Option-click forwarding,
    continuous Frost Bar image refresh and automatic placement of relaunched icons remain macOS 26 features.
  • macOS 26 keeps its existing behavior. macOS 28 and later remain notice-only.

Frost 0.3.5

@kylezh kylezh released this 09 Oct 01:46
c3e339c

Changed

  • On macOS 27, which Frost doesn't support yet, Frost now leaves the menu bar alone and says so: it only adds the
    snowflake, whose menu explains that this version of macOS isn't supported yet, and Settings shows the same notice.
    Frost no longer adds its separators there, which macOS 27 drops from the menu bar and which could put your icons
    in a different order when they came back. Updates keep working, so a version that supports macOS 27 can arrive
    automatically.

Fixed

  • The onboarding window fits its content, so its buttons are no longer cut off (as they were on macOS 27).
  • After you ask for Screen Recording in onboarding, the card waits while the system prompt is up instead of asking you
    to relaunch underneath it.

Frost 0.3.4

@kylezh kylezh released this 07 Oct 07:11
a5012f2

Fixed

  • An icon opened from the Frost Bar goes back to its exact slot even when you click the menu bar just as it moves
    back, and a menu you open at that moment stays open instead of closing again.
  • An icon Frost had moved out to capture its image when it quit goes back to its exact slot on the next launch, not
    to the edge of its section.
  • The first switch to the Layout tab after launching no longer stutters during the animation.
  • "Check for Updates…" in the snowflake's menu opens Settings → About first, so you see when Frost last checked.
  • The "Last checked" date in About is in the language Frost is shown in, also when it differs from your region's.
  • After you ask for Screen Recording in About, the row waits while the system prompt is up instead of asking you to
    relaunch underneath it.
  • Settings opens where you left it, with its top edge in place, instead of centering again after a relaunch.

@kylezh kylezh released this 07 Oct 05:38

Changed

  • Redesigned Settings in the style of System Settings: grouped sections on a standard window background, shorter
    descriptions, neutral colors, and a window that fits each tab, animating when you switch.
  • Update settings moved from Behavior to About, which now shows the app icon and when Frost last checked for updates
    next to Check for Updates….
  • The Layout tab no longer leaves a blank gap above its footer, and the note about off-screen icons no longer flickers
    when an app's icon blinks.

Frost 0.3.2

@kylezh kylezh released this 06 Oct 14:58

Fixed

  • Frost 0.3.1 could crash at launch after updating from 0.3.0 while moving cached icon images over to their new names.
    Relaunching got a bit further each time. 0.3.2 starts normally and keeps your layout.

Frost 0.3.1

@kylezh kylezh released this 06 Oct 14:05
3f437a7

Changed

  • Granting permissions takes fewer steps. Grant Access (Settings → About, the layout editor, the Behavior tab, the
    Frost Bar) asks for the permission right away instead of opening the welcome window first.
  • After you turn on Screen Recording, Relaunch appears right where you granted it, next to Open System
    Settings
    in case you closed or denied the system prompt. After relaunching, Frost reopens the window you were in,
    also after System Settings' "Quit & Reopen".
  • An icon opened from the Frost Bar goes back about 0.75 s after the pointer leaves it (it used to wait while the
    pointer was anywhere on the menu bar), so the snowflake is back where you expect it. It stays out while its menu is
    open or the pointer rests on it.
  • Settings reopens on the tab you used last, and no longer expands the menu bar while Accessibility is missing.
  • Without Screen Recording, short text icons (a counter, a percentage) show in full. Rows in the layout editor that
    don't fit show edge fades and paging arrows.
  • The Screen Recording description mentions the purple dot macOS shows while Frost captures icons.

Added

  • While Accessibility is missing, the snowflake's menu offers Grant Access….

Fixed

  • The system permission prompt no longer lingers behind System Settings and reappears after you granted access.
  • Clicking the snowflake right after granting Accessibility opens the Frost Bar instead of expanding the menu bar.
  • Icons with live numbers, such as fan speeds or temperatures in their tooltip, keep their section reliably instead of
    being treated as a different icon every few seconds.
  • An icon its app hides and shows again (for example one that blinks for unread messages) goes back to its section
    within a few seconds instead of staying in Always Hidden.
  • The Frost Bar no longer closes, and Frost no longer rescans the menu bar, when only the Dock changes size.

Frost 0.3.0

@kylezh kylezh released this 05 Oct 15:11

Added

  • Icons hidden behind the notch now get real images: while you aren't using the menu bar, Frost briefly moves one
    such icon out under a still image of the menu bar, captures it and puts it straight back (needs Screen Recording).

Changed

  • When you open an icon from the Frost Bar, the pointer moves to it once and stays there, instead of jumping to the
    menu bar and back. The pointer is hidden while Frost moves icons in the background.
  • Screen Recording is now optional: with Accessibility alone, the Frost Bar, the layout editor, moving icons and
    keeping them in their sections all work, and icons are shown as their app's icon (or a system symbol) with a short
    label where it helps. Grant Screen Recording to see real images of the icons; a small hint offers it.
  • Icons are identified by their Accessibility attributes instead of their window titles. Remembered sections, known
    icons and cached images are moved over automatically.

Fixed

  • An icon moved out for a background capture is always put back, also when you hold the mouse button for a long
    time or quit Frost meanwhile; the still image of the menu bar stays up until it's back.
  • Images captured before a Light/Dark Mode switch are refreshed, and failed captures are retried later.
