@gamboozino gamboozino released this 16 Oct 21:23

What's changed in 0.9.11

  • Windows: audio crackling fixed (#32, #34). The sound processing gave up waiting for the game's sound updates far too early on Windows and played short silent gaps, heard as crackling in music and effects, most of all in fights. Thanks to ManemanFTW (#34) and HammerD72 (#32), who found and measured it.
  • Windows: fullscreen at the screen's real resolution (#31). With display scaling above 100% (common on 1440p and 4K screens), Windows gave the game a smaller desktop and stretched its picture, so fullscreen looked lower-resolution. In a window, the game's window size is now in real screen pixels, so it can look smaller than before on such screens.
  • The bug report form asks for your CPU now (the game runs on one CPU core, like the Xbox).

About

Ninja Gaiden Black, running natively on Linux and Windows. The game's own code was recompiled to run directly on a PC, and it draws with its own Vulkan renderer, which takes over the game's Direct3D calls instead of emulating the Xbox GPU. It is not an emulator.

This is a pre-release: the game has not yet been played through to the end on it. The Windows build has been tested under Proton and in a Windows 11 virtual machine. Bug reports are very welcome.

You need your own copy of the game: the retail USA Xbox release, as a disc image (.iso, a full Redump dump, or the .7z/.zip it came in) or a folder of extracted files. These downloads contain no game data. On the first start the game asks for your copy and installs it (about 6 GB).

Downloads

  • Linux and Steam Deck: NinjaGaidenBlack-x86_64.AppImage. Make it executable and run it. On a Steam Deck, add it to Steam as a non-Steam game and pick 16:10 in the settings.
  • Windows 10/11 (64-bit): NinjaGaidenBlack-windows-x64.zip. Extract it anywhere and run NinjaGaidenBlack.exe.

Both need a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 drivers.

Highlights

  • A steady 60 fps with smooth frame pacing and low input latency, including on the Steam Deck
  • Render resolution up to 10x, anisotropic filtering, MSAA, sharper shadows
  • 16:9, 16:10 and 21:9 as well as 4:3: the 3D fills the screen, the HUD moves to the screen's corners, and menus keep the game's 16:9 look
  • Keyboard and mouse, with key prompts in the game; rebindable controls; mouse support in the menus
  • Skippable intros and movies; options to unlock every difficulty and costume; optional cheats
  • All settings in the game's own menus: RECOMP SETTINGS on the main menu, and the Settings tab of the pause menu

Known issues

  • Water in some places (the pond in Chapter 2, for example) can look banded instead of clear, so far reported on Nvidia cards on Windows (#16).
  • Controller vibration on Windows may only start working after switching Vibration off and on again in the game's Options (#15).
  • Installing directly from an ISO fails on some Windows PCs (#6, #14). Until that is fixed: extract the ISO to a folder named game next to NinjaGaidenBlack.exe, and it is found automatically.
  • Steam Deck: do the first start (installing the game) in Desktop Mode. In Game Mode the window to choose your disc image cannot open, and the game closes (#11).
  • The Ninja Gaiden arcade cabinet in Han's bar has been reported to crash on 0.9.5 (#18); 0.9.6 and later may fix it.
  • Stutter with V-Sync On on some Windows PCs (#17); V-Sync Off avoids it for now.
  • Light glows on the roof at the start of Chapter 5 can smear (#29).
  • At 21:9, objects at the far left and right of the screen can appear a moment late.
  • The Windows build has been tested under Proton and in a Windows 11 virtual machine; reports from real Windows PCs are especially welcome.

For a graphics glitch, press F7 while it is on screen and attach the ngb-trace-<n> folder it writes to your home folder (C:\Users\<you> on Windows).

@gamboozino gamboozino released this 16 Oct 20:21

What's changed in 0.9.10

  • The shine is back on characters (#22). Ryu's outfits, enemies and other characters have their glossy highlights again: they were computed facing away from the camera, so they almost never showed. On every GPU.
  • 4:3 movies no longer squeezed (#28). With the game's Options → Video Settings → Movie Display Ratio at 4:3, movies came out much too narrow; they are now a normal 4:3 picture with bars at the sides.
  • Skip Intros no longer skips the New Game opening movie (#28). It only skips the startup movie now. Every movie can still be skipped with Start, A or B.
  • Linux: Return to Main Menu no longer gets stuck on a black window after using it a few times, and no longer occasionally closes the game.
  • Windows: V-Sync timing back to 0.9.8's (#17). 0.9.9's timing to the display's refresh made stutter worse on some PCs, so it is off by default while it is looked into.

Ninja Gaiden Black Recompiled v0.9.9

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@gamboozino gamboozino released this 16 Oct 16:27

What's changed in 0.9.9

  • Windows: smoother frame pacing with V-Sync (#17). On a 60 Hz display the game now times its frames to the display's own refresh, instead of a separate 60 Hz clock that slowly drifted against it and caused stutter every few minutes. V-Sync Off is unchanged.
  • Invert Camera X / Y in RECOMP SETTINGS → Controls (#23, #24, #26). After loading, the right stick (or the mouse) looks around in first person, as on the Xbox; click the right stick (V) to turn the third-person camera, which the game inverts on both axes. The new options flip the stick and mouse for both views. To keep first-person look as it was, set the game's Options → Controller Settings → 1st Person Camera Control to Reverse.
  • Portable mode (#4). Tick "Keep the game, saves and settings next to the program" in the first-run setup, or put a file named portable.txt next to NinjaGaidenBlack.exe (or the AppImage): the installed game, saves, settings and shader cache then go into a userdata folder there. The folder must be writable, so not inside Program Files.
  • Fixed: EXIT TO DESKTOP briefly lighting up on the main menu when choosing RECOMP SETTINGS or OPTIONS (#27).
  • Fixed (Linux): a folder of extracted game files picked in the setup window was not remembered, so the setup could ask again at the next start.

Ninja Gaiden Black Recompiled v0.9.8

Pre-release

@gamboozino gamboozino released this 16 Oct 14:37

What's changed in 0.9.8

  • Windows: the shader cache now works across launches (#21, #17). On Windows the game could only ever reuse what it had learned in its very first session, so it prepared most shaders again at every launch: walls and effects could vanish for a moment after each start, and the extra work added to stutter. The cache files also kept growing; they are read whole again now and stop growing, and nothing needs to be deleted.
  • Fixed: the Windows build hanging at startup under Proton/Wine ("There's a problem with the disc you're using"), since 0.9.4. This does not affect the Linux AppImage.

@gamboozino gamboozino released this 16 Oct 12:13

What's changed in 0.9.7

  • Fixed: walls and effects briefly disappearing or flickering after each launch (#21). Shaders the game had already used in earlier sessions are now ready straight away instead of being skipped for a frame or two.
  • Less stutter (#17): the shader cache is now saved every few minutes instead of every few seconds, which caused a second of uneven frames each time, mostly on Nvidia.
  • A folder of game files you pick is remembered (#14), so you are no longer asked for it at every start.
  • For the water bug on Nvidia (#16): the log and F7 traces now record how the water's textures are read, to track down the cause.

Also included from 0.9.6: the fix for the Chapter 3 drone crash (#10).

Ninja Gaiden Black Recompiled v0.9.6

Pre-release

@gamboozino gamboozino released this 16 Oct 10:20

What's changed in 0.9.6

  • Fixed: a crash when hitting the drones in Chapter 3 (#10). The recompiler had missed a few small functions of the game's code; the first one, used when an arrow hits a drone, crashed the game. All three are now included, and the recompiled code is brought up to date.
  • Stutter every 10-20 seconds, with crackling audio, mostly on Nvidia, should be gone (#17). The game saved its shader cache in the middle of a frame while you played; it now does that in the background. Please tell us if you still see it.
  • Fixed: a rare crash right at startup on Windows.

Also included from 0.9.5: saving over an existing slot now sticks on Linux and the Steam Deck (#12, #13).

Still being looked into: the water in some places in Chapter 2 (#16), controller vibration on Windows (#15), installing directly from an ISO on some Windows PCs (#6, #14), and a crash at the Ninja Gaiden arcade cabinet (#18).

Ninja Gaiden Black Recompiled v0.9.5

Pre-release

What's changed in 0.9.5

  • Fixed (Linux and Steam Deck): saving over an existing slot didn't stick (#12, #13). The old save was left in place next to the new one, so after restarting the game the slot showed the older save again. Saving to an empty slot was not affected. After updating, save over your slots once and the saves will stick; leftover copies from before show up as extra slots that you can overwrite or delete.

The Windows build is unchanged apart from the version number. The Windows fixes from 0.9.4 (the "problem with the disc" message at startup, Return to Main Menu, a startup crash) are included.

Still being looked into: a crash when hitting the drones in Chapter 3 (#10).

  • At 21:9, objects at the far left and right of the screen can appear a moment late.
  • Reports from real Windows machines are especially welcome.

For a graphics glitch, press F7 while it is on screen and attach the ngb-trace-<n> folder it writes to your home folder (C:\Users\<you> on Windows).

What's changed in 0.9.4

  • Fixed: "There's a problem with the disc you're using" on Windows (#1). On many Windows PCs the game stopped while loading at startup and showed this message after about 10 seconds. The disc image was never the problem: a thread-scheduling bug in the Windows build could leave the game's main thread holding the (virtual) CPU, so the thread that reads the game's files never got to run. Many thanks to Manuel Flores (@ManemanFTW), who tracked down the same cause independently (#9).
  • Fixed: Return to Main Menu on Windows now goes back to the main menu instead of closing the game (#5).
  • Fixed: a rare crash during startup on Windows.
  • When installing from a disc image fails, the message now says what went wrong.
  • Building from source: a fresh clone builds again.

Ninja Gaiden Black Recompiled v0.9.3

What's changed in 0.9.3

  • Media-patched disc images are accepted. Many tools that make Xbox disc images "media patch" the game's default.xbe (a few bytes of its header) so a modded console can run it from a burned DVD. The installer compared the whole file and refused these copies with "not the retail USA Ninja Gaiden Black" (#2). It now checks the game's actual code and data and ignores the header; a copy whose game sections differ is still refused, and the log now says which part differs.

Still being looked into: on some Windows PCs the game stops while loading at startup and then shows "There's a problem with the disc you're using" (#1). 0.9.2 fixed one cause of that message (the music files); another remains.

What's changed in 0.9.2

  • Windows: no more "There's a problem with the disc you're using" message, and the music plays. At startup the game checks whether its music archive is a folder, and the Windows build wrongly answered yes, so it looked for every music track in the wrong place and then reported a damaged disc (#1). Under Proton the same bug only meant missing music.

0.9.1 included a fix for a crash at startup on real Windows (a timing bug in the Windows build's thread scheduler); please report back if you still see it.
