CipherVault 🛡️

CipherVault is a next-generation media authentication and archival platform for Windows — designed to verify, timestamp, and store digital media files with cryptographic integrity. While inspired by media download utilities, CipherVault pivots entirely toward provenance validation: ensuring that every audio, video, or image file you possess remains tamper-proof, traceable, and verifiable across time. Core Functionality 🔍

CipherVault processes media files through a multi-stage pipeline:

  2. Hashing — Computes SHA-256, SHA-512, and BLAKE2b hashes simultaneously for layered verification.
  3. Merkle Tree Construction — Groups files into batches, builds a Merkle root, enabling efficient verification of large collections.
  4. Timestamp Anchoring — Submits the Merkle root to public blockchain timestamping services (Bitcoin OP_RETURN, Ethereum logs, or OpenTimestamps).
  5. Certificate Generation — Creates a signed .cvcert file containing all hash chains, timestamps, and metadata — a self-contained proof package.

Each file submitted to CipherVault undergoes a three-pronged hashing gauntlet. The system computes SHA-256 for broad compatibility, SHA-512 for future-proofing, and BLAKE2b for speed. These three digests are cross-referenced to detect any collisions or anomalies. The resulting hash triplet becomes the file's digital DNA — unique, repeatable, and forensically sound.

Merkle Tree Architecture 🌳

When handling collections — such as a downloaded playlist or a photography portfolio — CipherVault organizes files into a binary Merkle tree. Leaf nodes contain individual file hashes; parent nodes combine child hashes until a single Merkle root emerges. This root represents the entire collection in a compact 256-bit fingerprint. Verifying any single file against the collection requires only a logarithmic number of hash computations, making bulk verification lightning-fast.

Blockchain Timestamping ⛓️

The Merkle root is submitted to one or more public blockchain networks. CipherVault supports Bitcoin (via OP_RETURN), Ethereum (via transaction data fields), and the OpenTimestamps aggregation service. Each submission includes a configurable fee budget. Once confirmed, the timestamp is permanently etched into the ledger — immutable, decentralized, and publicly verifiable by anyone.

Certificate Generation 📜

After timestamping, CipherVault generates a CipherVault Certificate (.cvcert) file. This XML-based document contains:

  • File names and sizes
  • Triple hash values
  • Merkle tree structure (partial or full)
  • Blockchain transaction IDs and block heights
  • UTC timestamps
  • Digital signature of the software client

This .cvcert file can be stored alongside media files, uploaded to cloud storage, or printed as a QR-encoded sheet for physical backup.
