Hi there, I'm Gargi Kalla πŸ‘‹

  • πŸ’šπŸ’› Computer Science Student @ George Mason University
  • πŸ’»πŸ“ Aspiring Full-Stack Software Engineer | Backend Developer | Java Developer
  • β˜•πŸ“š Currently obsessed with Java, Software Architecture & Building Useful Things

"I love taking ideas from a random thought to a working product."

πŸ“‹ Featured Projects

πŸš€ F1-Filter: Job Eligibility Scan Extension

  • Problem: As an international student, I got tired of manually checking whether I was eligible for jobs (reading the entire description and entering/ selecting the preferences on job boards πŸ™)
  • Solution: I'm building a Chrome extension that scans job descriptions for sponsorship-related keywords and tells me whether I'm eligible.

Tech: Google Chrome Extension API β€’ Manifest V3 β€’ JavaScript β€’ HTML β€’ CSS

πŸ“š Backlogr: Project Management Tool

  • Problem: After one too many college group projects where nobody knew who was doing what (or if they were doing anything at all), I got tired of chasing updates through Discord, spreadsheets, emails, and long google docs. Keeping teammates accountable and giving professors visibility into everyone's contributions shouldn't be this difficult 😭
  • Solution: My SWE443 team and I built Backlogr, a centralized platform where professors can track both team and individual progress, while students manage tasks, assign roles, and stay accountable, and finally stop asking, "Wait... who's supposed to do this?"

Tech: Java β€’ Spring Boot β€’ Spring MVC β€’ JPA/Hibernate β€’ MySQL β€’ H2 Database β€’ JavaScript β€’ HTML β€’ CSS

Code is private due to university honor code policies.

🎯 My Process

I like owning the entire development lifecycle:

  • πŸ’‘ Ideation
  • πŸ“ Requirements Gathering
  • 🎨 UI/UX Design
  • πŸ—οΈ Software Architecture
  • βš™οΈ Full-Stack Development
  • πŸ§ͺ Testing

while incorporating technical documentation and AI-powered tools throughout the process to speed up the process.
Right now I'm focused on building production-quality software while strengthening my understanding of scalable backend systems and software architecture.

🌱 Currently Learning

πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸ’» Tech Stack

Master of one, jack of all the other trades πŸ˜πŸ˜‚

My philosophy: I believe mastering the core Computer Science (CS) and Software Engineering (SWE) foundations is far more valuable than trying to collect every new tech stack like Pokeman cards.

Every application has different functional and non-functional requirements, so there isn't a single "best" tech stack. The tools should fit the problem we are trying to solve not the other way around. What doesn't change are the fundamentals: object-oriented programming, software design, databases, debugging, problem-solving, etc. I've learned that these skills carry over no matter what language or framework we use.

So, I am focusing on mastering the technologies that I genuinely enjoy working - the Java Ecosystem!

For everything else, whether it's MERN, Django, or the next trendy framework, I lean on AI, open source resources, documentation, and my own reasoning to adapt quickly :)

πŸ€“πŸ’‘ Fun Facts

  • My favorite language is Java.
  • I love turning everyday annoyances into software projects.
  • I've genuinely started to enjoy software architecture diagrams.
  • I have way too many project ideas (and not enough time or credits - free AI tools only).
  • I love to lead! I've been a part of leadership teams at GMU, including Girls Who Code and Indian Student Association.
  • Outside of my tech world, I love a variety of hobbies in art (painting, crafts), fitness (yoga, strength training, pilates), and photography <3

🀝 Let's Build Something Together

I'm currently looking for opportunities where I can continue growing as a software engineer while building software that makes a real impact.

I'm always happy to connect about:

  • πŸ’Ό Software Engineering Internships
  • πŸŽ“ New Grad Job Opportunities
  • 🀝 Collaborating on projects or hackathons
  • 🌱 Mentorship (whether you're looking for a mentee or just want to chat!)
  • πŸ’‘ EdTech, HealthTech, productivity tools, and technology for social good

If any of that resonates with you, I'd love to connect!

Thanks for stopping by! ⭐
Feel free to explore my repositories, share feedback, or follow along as I continue learning and building.
