@geosone geosone released this 23 Oct 09:37

Builds a German MS-DOS 7.1 floppy set (4 × 1.44 MB) and an installation CD with the GeosOne Dual Installer from your own Windows ME, Windows 98 SE, Windows 95 CDs and MS-DOS 6.22 disks.

Use

  1. Unpack msdosinst-2026-10-23.zip.
  2. Put your CD images (*.iso), disk images (*.img) or 7-Zip archives of them (*.7z) into one folder, or let the script download them with -Download (see below).
  3. Run .\mkdosset.ps1 -Source <folder> (PowerShell 5.1 on Windows, or PowerShell 7 on Windows/Linux). -List shows which files are still missing; FILES.md lists them all. -Iso also makes out\INSTALL.ISO, -Extra AHCIASPI.IMG,EUSBASPI.IMG adds driver disks.
  4. Write out\DISK1.IMG … DISK4.IMG to floppies, burn INSTALL.ISO, or use them in an emulator.

Included

  • INSTALL.EXE (GeosOne Dual Installer 1.15.1)
  • 7-Zip 25.01 for Windows (tools\7zip\7z.exe) and Linux (tools/7zip/7zz)
  • nasm 3.02 and apack1p for Windows (ext\small-io-sys\tools\win)
  • the Linux tools of small-io-sys (nasm, apack1p, cabextract, …)
  • the submodules small-io-sys and apack1p

No Microsoft files are included. You need your own licensed media; the script takes the files from them and patches them while building.

Changes since 2026-10-22

  • Microsoft Mouse 11.0 (optional medium, MOUSE.EXE and MOUSE.LAN): loaded by disk 1 and by the CD before the setup, and installed to C:\DOS with an option for AUTOEXEC.BAT. MOUSE.EXE is patched for BIOSes that take only 3-byte PS/2 packets (SeaBIOS/QEMU and many newer BIOSes; mouse-ps2.asm). Its messages are German (mouse-de.lan). Serial mice (Microsoft, Logitech and compatibles) work as before.
  • The setup works with the mouse (GeosOne Dual Installer 1.15.1): click buttons, option rows and the keys of the key bar.
  • The extra disks (-Extra, e.g. AHCIASPI and EUSBASPI) install one after the other without "NoMemory" (GeosOne Dual Installer 1.15.1); a Need= of an extra package that the setup cannot check for the new system asks "Install anyway" / "Skip".
  • -Download fetches the media missing in -Source (all of them without -Source) from WinWorld into -Cache\download, checked by SHA-256 (sets\msdos71de\downloads.txt, about 1.3 GB). You still need a license for each product.
  • CD installation: FDISK and FORMAT run from the boot disk A: (from the CD FORMAT stopped at "CDR101: Not ready"), and SYS A: C: replaces SYS C:, which failed from the CD.
  • FORMAT runs with /AUTOTEST (no second Y/N question after the one of the setup) and gives C: the label DOS as MS-DOS 6.22 did; FORMAT is patched so that /AUTOTEST keeps the /V: label.
  • -Iso: the CD boots with AHCIASPI.SYS and ASPICDA.SYS (OpenASPI) of the AHCIASPI 0.4 disk, with no Adaptec files; ASPICD.SYS of an EZ-SCSI disk only without it.

The EZ-SCSI disk contains Adaptec drivers: build it from your own EZ-SCSI 5.0 CD with ezscsi and do not pass it on.

Changes since 2026-10-21

  • -Extra takes disk images (*.IMG), e.g. AHCIASPI.IMG and EUSBASPI.IMG of AHCIASPI and EUSBASPI 0.3 and EZSCSI.IMG of ezscsi; the setup offers them in a list after the MS-DOS options and asks for their disks (a wrong disk is named, Retry/Skip).
  • -Iso: the CD boots with AHCIASPI.SYS and ASPICD.SYS from these disks (CD-ROM on SATA/AHCI and IDE) instead of OAKCDROM.SYS; -CdDriver is only needed without them.
  • The set no longer contains the DOS CD-ROM drivers of Windows 98/ME, only MSCDEX.EXE: AHCIASPI with ASPICD replaces them.
  • -Disk1Free (default 256 KB) keeps room on disk 1 for your own controller drivers.
  • INSTALL.EXE of the GeosOne Dual Installer 1.12.0.

The EZ-SCSI disk contains Adaptec drivers: build it from your own EZ-SCSI 5.0 CD with ezscsi and do not pass it on.

Earlier changes (2026-10-21)

  • All files come straight from the original CDs and disks (images and 7-Zip archives are read as they are)
  • MS-DOS programs of Windows ME and 98 SE, plus the MS-DOS 6.22 / Supplemental Disk / Windows 95 OLDMSDOS programs that are not in them; SHARE and the Windows 3.x programs of MS-DOS 6.22 as setup options
  • FDISK and FORMAT (Windows ME) show disks over 64 GB correctly
  • FORMAT /S works again
  • MS-DOS instead of Windows in the messages of COMMAND.COM, FDISK, HIMEM, EMM386, SETVER, SYS, DRVSPACE.BIN

@geosone geosone released this 09 Oct 08:42

Builds a bootable MS-DOS 7.1 (German) installation disk set from the files of your own MS-DOS disks - no Microsoft files are included.

  1. Unpack, run .\mkdosset.ps1 -List to see the files needed (PowerShell 5.1 on Windows, or PowerShell 7 on Windows/Linux/macOS).
  2. Copy the files of your disks into a folder, run .\mkdosset.ps1 -Source <folder> [-Extra <ahciaspi folder> ...].
  3. Write out\DISK1.IMG ... to floppies.

The setup partitions (FDISK) and formats the hard disk if needed, installs MS-DOS 7.1 from 4 disks and then installs further software from extra disks (e.g. AHCIASPI, EUSBASPI) in the same run.

First version, tested in QEMU. Contains INSTALL.EXE of the GeosOne DOS Installer 1.1.
