canvasOS 1.1.3

A release for your phone: the phone page becomes a real remote, in the spirit of the Apple TV Remote app, and no longer needs local debugging to drive canvasOS. It gets a fixed address, installs on the phone's home screen, and opens your apps from a distance. On the TV, canvasOS picks its logo.

Files

  • canvasOS.apk: the standard build, for Android TV / Google TV, certified boxes, Sony BRAVIA, Xiaomi, Hisense and most televisions.
  • canvasOS-guard.apk: the build for TCL / FFalcon, whose firmware rejects home-screen APKs.

Updating. From a 1.1.x installed from the Releases, Home Settings → System → Update installs it by itself (two presses), and adb install -r works too. From a 1.0.0, or from a locally built APK, you still need to uninstall first: the signature is different.

Remote

  • Trackpad. The Remote tab no longer scrolls: one large pad fills the screen. Swipe to move the selection, keep swiping to move several items, tap for OK, hold your finger for a long press on OK (an app's menu, Control Center editing). Below it: Back, Home and Keyboard; the volume at the very bottom. The playback buttons are gone.
  • Live keyboard. The Keyboard button opens the phone's own: what you type appears at once in the field selected on the TV, backspace and Enter included. Accents are dropped (é becomes e): Android's input only knows ASCII.
  • No local debugging needed on canvasOS. On the home screen, the settings and the photo frame, keys arrive directly: nothing to authorize to navigate canvasOS, and the volume works everywhere. Local debugging is now only needed to control other apps and to install APKs.
  • Snappier. canvasOS keeps its local-debugging connection open instead of reopening it for every key.

Phone page

  • Three tabs: Remote, Apps, Settings. My photos and the picture links come first in Settings; the wallpaper and the screensaver are now chosen on the TV, with previews.
  • Apps tab. It shows the home screen as it is, in order: apps, folders with their apps, HDMI inputs. An Open button launches the app, opens the folder or switches the TV's source.
  • Installing an APK: the file picker greyed out APKs on most phones. Fixed.
  • canvasos.local. The page also answers at http://canvasos.local:8790/…, an address that does not change with the TV's IP address. iPhones and Android 12 and later resolve it in the browser; the QR code keeps the IP address for the others. If the TV's IP address changes anyway, a banner on the screen says so.
  • On the phone's home screen. iPhone: Share → Add to Home Screen, and the page opens full screen with the canvasOS icon. Android: menu → Add to Home screen (a shortcut that opens in the browser, since Chrome reserves full screen for HTTPS pages). The icon keeps the current code: after Regenerate code, add it again.

Logo

  • canvasOS or tvOS. The APK ships two title cards and two start-up films. Home Settings → Appearance → Logo picks the one used as the settings icon (the "Home Settings" tile and the large picture on the settings page) and as the boot animation's film. Two rows let you step away from it: Settings icon (Logo, Imported picture, Gear) and Animation content (Logo film, Imported video, canvasOS name). Over adb: --es brand canvasos|tvos.
  • New launcher icon, for TVs that show canvasOS as an app.

Also

  • On Android 9 and 10, a long press on OK sent through debugging (input keyevent --longpress) was seen as a plain click; the home screen now recognizes it.
  • README, screenshots and website updated.
