Knit 2.10.0-alpha.2 (pre-release)
Pre-releaseAdded
- In a group chat, typing @ now offers @everyone first. Picking it mentions every other member at once, and each
gets the same mention alert as if you had picked them one by one. - You can now send short videos in any chat, Nearby included. Knit shrinks each one to about 3 MB and keeps
the first 61 seconds, and like a large photo, a video only Bluetooth can bring waits for your tap. - If you support Knit, you can show a small supporter badge on your photo. It's off until you switch it on in your
profile, and other phones check each badge before they show it. - A paid Knit Anywhere account now works on one phone at a time. If it's in use on another phone, the relay's
page says so and offers to move it here, which is also how a phone restored from a backup takes it back. - Settings has a new Low-power mode that turns Wi-Fi Aware off to save battery, and it switches on by itself
while Battery Saver is on. Bluetooth keeps the phone on the mesh, so messages still arrive, but photos and
files take longer. - You now get a notification when someone reacts to one of your messages, and that chat moves to the top of
your list with their reaction as its last line. Changing or taking back a reaction updates both.
Changed
- Photos, voice messages and files over 1 MB that only Bluetooth can bring now wait for you to tap them, since
that download can take minutes. Over Wi-Fi Aware they still download by themselves, and Settings can raise
the limit to 5 MB or turn it off. - Private messages over LoRa to someone your board hasn't heard from lately now wait, apart from one every 15
minutes. Once that one is answered the rest follow, so texting a friend whose board is switched off no
longer uses up your airtime. - With content filtering on, a reply to a hidden message is now hidden too, as is a reply whose quote the
filter would hide. Tap it to read it, as with any hidden message. - A photo in a private chat no longer goes up to your internet relay once it has reached the other phone over
Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Aware, even after you part, which saves mobile data. Photos in group chats still upload
as before. - Report a problem in About now opens GitHub's bug form with your Knit version, phone model and Android
version filled in. You only have to describe what went wrong and how to make it happen again.
Fixed
- Knit could close while you were using it, after a phone you had been near walked out of Wi-Fi Aware range.
It no longer restarts itself while you're in the app or on a call, or because of a phone that's far away. - A reply could quote someone saying something they never wrote. Quotes now show the message as your phone
received it, and say so when your phone doesn't have the original to check against. - In a group still in your message requests, someone who had left could reappear, or someone who had come
back could disappear again, after Knit cleared the group's older messages. Your phone now shows the same
members as everyone else's. - A group message sent just as another member left or came back could stay unreadable for everyone else, with
no warning on either phone. It now opens like any other message in the group. - An iPhone with Knit in the background now stays connected to your phone over Bluetooth. Before, your phone
dropped it first once it had as many connections as it could hold, and sometimes turned the iPhone away when
it tried to reconnect. - With an internet relay switched on, Knit could stutter for up to half a minute after it started, reconnected
to a relay or passed midnight UTC. It now skips that work for chats the relay already holds, and a new
chat's setup no longer holds up the screen or a call. - When Knit updated while it was open, it searched for phones gone out of Bluetooth range as if it were in the
background, until you switched away and back. It now searches harder whenever Knit is on screen. - If someone restored Knit from a backup before a file you sent them arrived, it could reach them as a picture
that never opened, with no file name. It now arrives as a file they can open or save. - After Knit restarted, old messages passed on by a nearby phone could make it reset the encryption of a chat
that was working fine, and a contact out of range then dropped off your internet relays until you met. Those
messages no longer cause a reset. - When Knit reset the encryption of a chat with someone your phone reaches only through an internet relay, the
chat could stay off the relay until you met. The reset now goes through the relay, and the chat says "Not
covered by relays yet" until they answer. - Messages you kept sending to someone out of reach for more than a day could stay unreadable on their phone
for days after you met again. They now open as soon as they arrive. - After someone restored Knit from a backup, messages you had sent them in the ten minutes before could miss
them for good if another phone was passing your messages along. Knit now sends those messages a second time
a few minutes later. - After you switched your internet relays off, a message to someone only your LoRa board could reach wasn't
sent until Knit restarted, and stayed at one check mark. It now goes out over the board right away. - After a group member restored Knit from a backup, some of their older group messages could fail to open on
your phone for good. Messages from before and after the restore now both open. - A modified copy of Knit nearby could make yours close when you wrote to it, or stop your phone noticing new
phones until Knit restarted. Knit now stays open and sends to that copy with its older encryption, or holds
the message back. - A modified copy of Knit nearby could hold a message back from your phone for up to a day by sending a fake
of it first. Knit now turns the fake away, so the real message arrives. - If you read more than 128 of someone's Nearby room posts before you next met, their phone showed your double
tick on only 128 of them. It now shows on all of them. - A modified copy of Knit nearby could change the photo your phone shows for one of your contacts, even while
that contact was connected. Knit now turns away a phone that names itself with an altered copy of their ID. - A phone nearby could keep showing as connected over Bluetooth for half an hour after the link had stopped
working, so messages waited and calls never rang. When both phones have this version, Knit now drops such a
link within a few minutes and looks for the phone again.

knit-2.10.0-alpha.2.apk — sha256:bd77ec5ce94914639a23e37e6b686cd18822b5c5e60176be63cf0bda7ef4159a
Signed with Knit's distribution key (certificate b18a283d11797c2a84a008c1fcb9e1b864e7b4c3b301408f7a4a80624b0e631c) — the same key every off-Play Knit
build carries — so it installs straight over an existing F-Droid, GitHub or mesh-shared install
without an uninstall, and keeps your messages.
Going back to the current stable is not possible in place: Android refuses the versionCode
downgrade, so reverting costs an uninstall and everything stored on the device with it. The next
stable release will update over this build normally.
CI verified this APK is byte-identical, apart from the signature, to an independent unsigned
rebuild produced inside F-Droid's own buildserver image — the same reproducibility gate stable
releases pass.
