Environment
- OS: Windows
- GitHub Copilot app: 1.1.15
- Bundled Copilot CLI: 1.0.83-5
- Repository/project: Private
- First noticed: 2026-09-07
Problem
When I try to start a new chat/session in a project I have been working on, the app reports:
Failed to create session: invalid argument: This project already has an active Local workspace.
All existing sessions for the project show Idle. The Health check page reports Healthy, including valid GitHub authentication, writable repository storage, and a valid Git installation.
There is no action in Health check to release or repair the Local workspace.
Workaround and impact
The only workaround I have found is to archive existing sessions one by one until a new chat can be created. This is not acceptable because some of those sessions were created today and contain output I still need to review.
Idle sessions appear to continue reserving the project’s Local workspace. A new session should be creatable without archiving previous idle sessions, or the app should provide a way to release the workspace while preserving access to those sessions.
Expected behavior
I should be able to create a new chat for the project while previous sessions are Idle and still accessible.
Additional information
This behavior was not occurring before today. It may have started after the recent Copilot CLI/app update.
