Hitting "Merging stacked PRs via this API is not supported" with trunk.io

My repository uses trunk.io for its merge queue. I knew that this would probably mean that we couldn't try to merge multiple PRs in the stack at once, but it actually prevents merging PRs even if they're the first PR in the stack (targeting the trunk). Trunk.io obviously can't use the web UI, but now by adding a PR to a stack this seems to make it impossible to use the API.

Pull request was removed from the merge queue because GitHub returned the following error message when attempting to merge it - Merging stacked PRs via this API is not supported. Use the web interface instead. - https://docs.github.com/rest/pulls/pulls#merge-a-pull-request.
