OpenTricky 0.1.5: Faster, and a round of fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@GiZcesi GiZcesi released this 02 Nov 16:51
OpenTricky-0 1 5-header-2560x1440

Sixth public release of OpenTricky: faster when the processor is the limit, and a round of fixes for 0.1.4. On our test PC, without a frame rate limit, it shows 24 to 31% more frames per second than 0.1.4 on the scenes we measured. The sun's glare no longer drops out when the graphics card falls behind, the game's videos play at their own pace, split screen at Draw distance Max keeps its colours, the scene after the finish line fits screens wider than 16:9, and Find my disc image no longer crashes the launcher. Two new settings: Weather, for snowfall without the thick fog, and PlayStation controllers (experimental). Smoother legs in turns no longer jumps back above 60 FPS, and the Steam Deck preset now turns it off. Races play out exactly as in 0.1.4. Guides and help are on opentricky.com.

💿 No disc image, music or video from the game is distributed. You need your own copy of the game: a disc image (.iso or .xiso) of SSX Tricky for the original Xbox, USA release.

Download

OpenTricky-0.1.5-win64.zip runs on Windows 10/11 64-bit with Direct3D 11, and on Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton. For a new install, extract it into an empty folder, start OpenTricky.exe and pick your disc image: click the disc label at the top, or the drop area, then choose from the SSX Tricky (USA) disc images found on this computer (Find my disc image), or browse for it. To check the download, use SHA256SUMS.txt and its signature, SHA256SUMS.txt.sig.

  • Coming from 0.1.2, 0.1.3 or 0.1.4: update from the launcher. Your saves, your settings and your disc image are kept.
    • Settings that match a preset (Recommended, Original Xbox or Steam Deck) follow that preset's current values. Settings you chose yourself stay, and each setting your version didn't have takes the value of the closest preset (from 0.1.4, that is Weather; PlayStation controllers starts Off).
    • From 0.1.2 or 0.1.3, you also get everything that came with 0.1.4: see the 0.1.4 release notes.
    • No update offered? The 0.1.4 launcher has Check now in Settings → Advanced → Updates. The 0.1.2 and 0.1.3 launchers look only once a day: close the launcher, delete update-cache.txt (next to settings.ini; deleting it is harmless), then start it again. With Skip launcher next time on, hold Shift (or Back / Select on a controller) while you start OpenTricky.exe to see the launcher.
  • Coming from 0.1.1: the 0.1.1 launcher can't install 0.1.5, so install it fresh, in a new folder. Saves in Documents\My Games\SSX Tricky\Saves stay where they are; if yours were inside the old folder (a Saves folder with portable.txt, or an hdd folder), copy that folder, and portable.txt, across. Leave settings.ini behind: pick your disc image again (and your save folder, if you had chosen one), remake your shortcuts (the game is bin\SSX Tricky.exe), then delete the old folder.

Faster

When the processor is the limit, mostly above 60 FPS, the part of OpenTricky that turns the game's graphics commands into Direct3D 11 now does less work for the same picture. It no longer sets again what the graphics card already has, it keeps more of what it has built (shaders, samplers, and the work of Smoother terrain seams), and it reuses its vertex memory instead of asking the driver for new memory each time it fills up.

On our test PC (Core i7-12700, GeForce RTX 4070 Super, 3440 × 1440), with the same settings for both, 0.1.5 against 0.1.4:

  • Without a frame rate limit: 24 to 31% more frames per second on average, and 9 to 29% higher 1% lows, on Garibaldi (Race), Pipedream in the sun (Freeride) and Pipedream (Showoff).
  • On a 240 Hz screen: it holds 240 FPS on Garibaldi (Race), Snowdream and Elysium (Showoff); 0.1.4 fell just short on Elysium (237). Pipedream doesn't reach 240: about 230 in the sun and 224 in Showoff, against 221 and 203 with 0.1.4.

That is one PC. We haven't measured it on a Steam Deck.

Fixes

Closer to the original game. These fixes are always on, in every preset, Original Xbox included:

  • The sun's glare when the graphics card falls behind. To know how much of the sun shows, the game asks the graphics card and waits for its answer. With a high frame rate limit and a heavy graphics load, OpenTricky stopped that wait too early, and the sun's glare and rays dropped out on some frames, on Pipedream for example. The card now gets as long to answer as in the original game. Where the sun is in view, that wait can cost frames per second when the graphics card is the limit (see Known issues).
  • The game's videos. OpenTricky showed their frames on a timer of its own, about 40 times a second and unevenly, though they are made at about 30 frames per second. Each frame now goes to the screen when the game finishes it, as in the original game: on a 60 Hz screen, in our tests, almost every frame stays on screen for two refreshes, against about a third in 0.1.4.

Picture

  • Split screen at Draw distance Max: with two players, the game could write new graphics commands over ones that hadn't been drawn yet: its own check for this never saw where the drawing had got to. The picture then lost one or two of its colours, race display included, and could turn to a single colour. The check now works.
  • Camera cuts above 60 FPS: when the game cut from one shot to the next over a short distance (at the start of a Showoff, for example), the picture slid from one shot to the other for a few frames. It now cuts, as at 60 FPS.
  • Screens wider than 16:9: the scene the game plays after the finish line is now shown as on a 16:9 screen, in a 16:9 frame in the middle. Before, the camera stepped back and narrowed its view for the wider screen: it could end up inside the scenery (seconds of a single colour), and the shots were cropped (heads cut off). The Top 5, the results and the replay stay wide, as in 0.1.4, and the race itself doesn't change. The game's 3D sounds are now placed from the game's own camera, as on a 16:9 screen, and above 60 FPS a race no longer starts with the rider looking bigger for a few frames.
  • The first frame after a change of frame: when the picture switches between a frame in the middle of the screen and the full width (at the end of a race's intro, and after the finish line on screens wider than 16:9), that first frame is now drawn for its new shape, not stretched or squeezed.
  • Smooth edges (SMAA) under Wine 9.0: its shader compiler refused SMAA, so the game ran without it. SMAA now builds there too; on Windows, its shaders haven't changed.
  • A shader that fails to build (as can happen under Wine or Proton) is now tried once, not again at every draw, which could slow the game to a crawl.

Launcher

  • Find my disc image: choosing a disc image from the list could crash the launcher. With many disc images found, the list now scrolls inside the window instead of running past its edge. In the launcher's lists, with a controller or the keyboard, the selected line always comes into view, and a press never acts on a line you can't see.
  • It keeps files that aren't its own. Since 0.1.2, each start of the launcher tidied up after 0.1.1 by removing any SSX Tricky.exe, ui folder or THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt next to OpenTricky.exe, by name alone, and even through folder links (junctions): files of those names that belonged to something else could be deleted. It now removes only files that are exactly those of 0.1.1, never deletes anything through a link, and leaves everything else where it is.
  • Program moved to another drive: when bin is a folder link, a failed update or Restore, or one undone at the next start, no longer removes that link. Before, the launcher then opened with an empty window.

Screenshots

  • F12 in a read-only folder: when the folder of OpenTricky.exe can't be written (in Program Files, for example), screenshots go to Documents\My Games\SSX Tricky\Screenshots instead of failing.
  • The .txt beside each screenshot shows your settings when the game's folder has accents in its name. It used to say that settings.ini wasn't found.

Smoothness

  • No pause before the first race of a session: the game drew its button icons at the start line, on the thread that feeds the graphics card. It now draws them in the background when it starts.
  • 60 FPS with VSync on: when the graphics card needs a few milliseconds per frame, the game sleeps while it waits for the card to finish. In our tests, most of these waits ended at once, on a signal left over from the previous frame, and then kept a processor core busy until the card was done. Each wait now waits for its own frame.

New

  • Weather (Graphics, under Snow look): outside races and with one player, snow always falls on Snowdream, and on some visits to Merqury City. PS2 shows it without the thick fog that comes with it in the original game, a fog the PS2 version doesn't have: the night sky and the distant slopes stay in view, and shadows fall as in clear weather. Garibaldi, Elysium and Untracked, where the PS2 version never has weather, stay clear. The falli...

OpenTricky 0.1.4: First stable release

Choose a tag to compare

@GiZcesi GiZcesi released this 29 Oct 20:44
0 1 4-header-1920x1080

Fifth public release of OpenTricky, and the first stable one. Everything since 0.1.3 in one release: evenly paced frames, a race display in HD, new graphics options (most with a preview of each value), a cleaner launcher that works with every connected controller, and a round of fixes to the picture and to stability. More on opentricky.com.

💿 No disc image, music or video from the game is distributed. You need your own copy of the game: a disc image (.iso or .xiso) of SSX Tricky for the original Xbox, USA release.

Download

OpenTricky-0.1.4-win64.zip: extract it into a new, empty folder, start OpenTricky.exe and choose your disc image: click the disc label at the top, or the drop area, to pick it from the SSX Tricky (USA) disc images found on this computer (Find my disc image) or to browse for it. Windows 10/11 64-bit with Direct3D 11, or Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton. You can check the download against SHA256SUMS.txt (its signature is SHA256SUMS.txt.sig).

  • Coming from 0.1.2 or 0.1.3: let the launcher update you. Your saves, your settings and your disc image are kept.
    • If your settings match a preset (Recommended, Original Xbox or Steam Deck), they move to that preset's new values. If you changed them yourself, your values stay, and each new setting takes the value of the preset closest to yours.
    • No update shown? Your 0.1.2 or 0.1.3 launcher checks GitHub once a day: close it, delete update-cache.txt (next to settings.ini; it's safe to delete), then open it again.
  • Coming from 0.1.1: install 0.1.4 fresh, in a new folder: the 0.1.1 launcher can't install it. If your saves were inside the old folder (a Saves folder with portable.txt, or an hdd folder), copy that folder (and portable.txt) into the new one. Don't copy settings.ini: choose your disc image again (and your save folder, if you had chosen one), make your shortcuts again (the game is now bin\SSX Tricky.exe), then delete the old folder.

Fixes

Closer to the original game. These fixes are always on, in every preset, Original Xbox included:

  • Flicker on Garibaldi and Merqury City: the lattice towers and the speaker pole on Garibaldi, and the lit windows of Merqury City, no longer flicker.
  • Rival icon above 60 FPS: the marker over a rival stays on the rider instead of trailing behind.
  • Tricky meter: at any Race HUD size, the gauge stays in one piece: its head stays on its rail when it bounces as you earn a letter, and its letters no longer fly off with a trick's points. Above 60 FPS, it spins at the original speed instead of too fast (up to 2.3 times as fast at 144 FPS in our tests).
  • Thin lines (cables, wires) keep their width at high resolutions instead of getting thinner.
  • Replay screen on ultrawide monitors: the panel background reaches both edges.
  • Trick names are centred on their button icons, and as sharp as the rest of the race display with HD HUD.
  • Pause menu with HD HUD: the pause screens look as in the original game, like the screens after a race; the HD race display comes back on the first frame after the pause.
  • Look like the Xbox is gone from the settings: its fixes (fog volumes, lens flares, board tops, colours) are part of drawing the game correctly, so they are always on.

Stability:

  • Rare freezes and crashes: when the game had no room left for a rider's model or shadow, it could freeze; that piece is now left out and the race goes on. A disc image the game can't start from now gives a message instead of a crash.
  • Other fixes: to the game's internal clocks in long sessions, to the sound, and to some translated code that could give odd results with some compilers.
  • settings.ini is written in full before it replaces the old file, and PLAY tells you when your settings can't be saved.
  • Accented folder names: when Windows is set to use UTF-8 for all languages, disc images and folders with accents in their names now open.
  • Screenshots (F12): they show what you see on screen, at your window's size, and are saved in the background without a stutter; two screenshots in the same second no longer overwrite each other. Shift+F12 saves a burst in a folder of its own. A short .txt beside each screenshot (one per burst) notes the track and your settings, without your folder names.

Frame pacing and input delay

  • At 60 FPS with VSync on (the default), on a 60, 120 or 240 Hz screen that reports its refresh timing, almost every frame now stays on screen for the same time; 0.1.3 left some frames up longer than others, a slight stutter. The price is a few milliseconds of delay (in our tests, about 3 ms on a 240 Hz screen, more on a 60 Hz one). This is the frame rate of the Original Xbox and Steam Deck presets; for the Steam Deck, see the known issues below.
  • With Match screen (the default Frame rate limit) on a screen above 60 Hz, the game follows the screen's exact refresh rate (for example 239.98 Hz, not 240), so frames no longer wait in a queue: in our tests on a 240 Hz screen, the picture reaches the screen 1 to 2 ms sooner than in 0.1.3. With VSync set to Off, the delay drops a little too. On a 60 Hz screen (59.94 Hz included), Match screen runs at 60 FPS, like 60 (Xbox).
  • Above 60 FPS, with a frame rate limit (Match screen by default), frames are evenly spaced and the limit is held exactly when your PC keeps up. Each frame shows the game at the time it reaches the screen, so motion stays smooth.
  • Less stutter from the log file: the game's log (on by default, for bug reports) is now written in the background, and its periodic diagnostics are left out of it. In our tests on Elysium Alps, the number of frames that took longer than 8 ms fell by about three quarters.
  • Under the hood: the game's clock ticks every millisecond, so its frame limiter keeps time, and the graphics card starts on each frame sooner.

New options

Most new options show a preview in the launcher, one picture per value. HD HUD, Lightmap smoothing, Snow look (Soft) and Smoother terrain seams are on in Recommended and off in Original Xbox; Render scale and Shadow softness stay at 100% in every preset.

  • HD HUD (Graphics): the race display in HD (timer, gauges, positions and their text), clean at any resolution. On in Recommended and Steam Deck. HUD art by Bl4ckH4nd.
  • Render scale (Display, 50 to 200%): draws the 3D below or above your resolution; menus and the race display stay at full resolution. Above 100%, the picture is averaged down for smoother, finer edges. At 100% (the default), the picture is the same as before.
  • Lightmap smoothing (Graphics): smooths the light baked into the snow and the slopes, with no more diamond-shaped steps; the light itself is unchanged. In our tests, it costs about 1% of frame rate when the graphics card is the limit.
  • Snow look (Graphics): Soft, the default, gives smoother snow without grain, with visible board trails; Original keeps the original grainy snow.
  • Shadow softness (Graphics, 40 to 150%): the width of the soft shadows' edge. 100% is the shadow of 0.1.3.
  • Smoother terrain seams (Advanced): hides most of the lines between pieces of terrain, a quirk of the original game. The seams are cached instead of being worked out on every frame.

Also changed:

  • Texture filtering is 16x in Recommended and Steam Deck: distant slopes look clearer. Original Xbox sets it to Off (Xbox).
  • Smoother legs in turns is no longer marked experimental.
  • Riders are always drawn with their most detailed model, in every preset, so they no longer switch to a simpler one in the distance.
  • Shorter setting names: in Frame rate limit, The screen's refresh rate is now Match screen and 60 (as on Xbox) is 60 (Xbox); in Race HUD size, Like the Xbox (stretched) is now Stretched (Xbox); in Texture filtering, Off (as on Xbox) is now Off (Xbox); Save games folder is now Save folder.

Launcher

  • Cleaner and easier to use: shorter help, the same clear focus ring on every control, and menus that work with every connected controller, not only the first one.
  • New look: clear status labels for your disc image and for updates, sharper buttons and panels, every label aligned to the pixel.
  • Find my disc image: when you click the disc label at the top or the drop area, the launcher looks in your OpenTricky folder, in Downloads, on the Desktop and in Documents (on Linux and the Steam Deck, also in your home folder and on SD cards), checks each disc image it finds, and lists the SSX Tricky (USA) ones; pick one with the mouse or a controller. If it finds none, the file browser opens.
  • Updates: a Check now button; Cancel stops the download and changes nothing. An update or a restore cut short is put right at the next start: finished if every file was already in place; otherwise undone, so the version you were using comes back as it was. The launcher asks GitHub at most every 6 hours. Update channel is Stable or Beta (formerly Unstable).
  • Window: its shape now stays between 16:10 and 2:1 when you resize it (at least 960×600).
  • PLAY tells you when the ga...

OpenTricky 0.1.3: Smooth on the Deck

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@GiZcesi GiZcesi released this 13 Oct 16:56
0 1 3-header-2560x1440

Fourth public test release of OpenTricky: a short one. The game now runs smoothly on Linux and the Steam Deck, the music fades as it does in the original game, and updates are signed. More on opentricky.com.

⚠️ Unstable. It is fully playable, but please read the Known issues first.
💿 No disc image, game code, music or video is distributed. You need your own copy of the game: a disc image (.iso or .xiso) of SSX Tricky for the original Xbox, USA release.

Download

OpenTricky-0.1.3-unstable-win64.zip: extract it into a new, empty folder, start OpenTricky.exe and choose your disc image. Windows 10/11 64-bit with Direct3D 11, or Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton. You can check the download against SHA256SUMS.txt (its signature is SHA256SUMS.txt.sig).

  • Coming from 0.1.2: let the launcher update you. Your settings and saves are kept.
    • No update shown yet? The launcher checks GitHub once a day. Close it, delete update-cache.txt (in your OpenTricky folder, next to settings.ini; it's safe to delete), then open it again.
  • Coming from 0.1.1: install 0.1.3 fresh, in a new folder: the 0.1.1 launcher stops at "verify" and can't install it.
    • Saves in Documents\My Games\SSX Tricky\Saves stay where they are. If your saves were inside the old folder (a portable copy, with portable.txt), copy its Saves folder and portable.txt into the new folder.
    • Don't copy settings.ini: the new defaults are recommended. Choose your disc image again (and your save folder, if you had picked one).
    • Then delete the old folder.

Highlights

  • Linux and Steam Deck (Wine, Proton): the very low frame rate is fixed. The game's shaders now run on the graphics card again under Proton, and the soft shadows no longer crash Wine's shader compiler. A player confirmed it on GitHub: 60 FPS locked, 120 at most.
  • Music, as in the original game: under the announcer's voice, on the results screen and in the menus, the music now fades down and back up over one second instead of jumping at once. It was a translation error of the port.
  • Steam Deck preset, by itself: the launcher applies it at the first start on a Steam Deck.
  • Signed updates: the launcher checks the signature of the downloaded zip, and refuses one that is unsigned or modified.

Full list, with every fix: CHANGELOG.md.

Known issues (short)

  • Above 60 FPS, the controls answer one game step later (about 17 ms): set Frame rate limit to 60 for the original game's exact timing.
  • Linux / Steam Deck (Proton): 0.1.3 fixes the very low frame rate under Wine/Proton. The game now runs smoothly on Linux. With Proton Experimental, performance may still be lower: if so, try Proton 10 or PortProton, and report it with your logs.
  • Only Xbox-style (XInput) controllers are supported natively; with Steam Input or DS4Windows, pick PlayStation modern or PS2 original in Button style.
  • 5.1 isn't tested on real speakers. Smoother legs in turns is experimental.
  • Some pieces of terrain show visible seams, as in the original game.

@GiZcesi GiZcesi released this 11 Oct 20:52
SSX Tricky 2026-10-11 15-07-15

Third public test release of OpenTricky: a round of fixes that bring the game closer to the original (the "melting" snow, the Showoff snowflakes, the crowd and the voices at the end of a race), steadier long sessions, a new Save profile with everything unlocked, plus a tidier install folder and a launcher that tells you when a setting does nothing.

Download

OpenTricky-0.1.2-win64.zip: extract it into a new, empty folder, start OpenTricky.exe and choose your disc image. Windows 10/11 64-bit with Direct3D 11.

  • Coming from 0.1.1: install 0.1.2 fresh, in a new folder, rather than through the update offered by the 0.1.1 launcher.
  • The game now lives in bin\: the folder keeps OpenTricky.exe and your own files at the top, and the game is bin\SSX Tricky.exe. If you had a shortcut to the old SSX Tricky.exe, make it again: to OpenTricky.exe, or to bin\SSX Tricky.exe to start the game straight away.
  • Saves in a folder with accents: 0.1.1 could write your saves to a wrongly named copy of that folder. At its first start, 0.1.2 copies them to the right folder. Nothing is moved or deleted: the old folder stays as it is.

Highlights

  • The "melting" snow is fixed: on Snowdream especially, the terrain could look deformed and your rider sink into the snow. It was a defect of the port (the HUD size setting leaked into the scenery), not of the game. Gone.
  • Showoff snowflakes: they were almost impossible to collect, because of a wrong collision check in the port. Fixed, as in the original game.
  • The end of a race, as in the original game:
    • the rider's voice is heard during the close-up;
    • above 60 FPS the crowd, its chants and the track ambience were cut (most noticeable in the end-of-race cinematic). They are back, so you may hear more ambience in races than before: that is the original.
  • Race start: skipping the trick screen while it opens no longer shows the picture stretched while the black bars slide away.
  • Long sessions: after about five events in a row without quitting, the next track could load without its world, then crash. Fixed: play as long as you like.
  • Original behaviour restored: three small things the port had lost, including how a rider is put back on the track and one collision case. In some situations an AI rider may be put back slightly differently than before, as in the original game.
  • The HUD at any frame rate: the race HUD and its menus now run at the right speed above 60 FPS, and during a trick the score, the boost and the Tricky meter no longer jump back to their old position.
  • Intro videos: after the EA logo, Start (Enter on the keyboard) skips the videos at the first press. The EA logo itself can't be skipped, as in the original game.
  • VSync Adaptive tears less: it only tears when the game stays slow for a while.
  • Wine and Proton (Steam Deck, Linux): the game could freeze before the first picture, or crash when you pressed Play. It now picks another memory area when the one it needs is taken. We haven't had this confirmed by a player on a Steam Deck or Linux yet: reports are welcome.
  • Save profile (new): in Settings → Game, choose My save (your own progress, as before) or Unlock all: a separate save with everything unlocked, through the game's own unlock cheat. Your own save is never touched, and back on My save your progress is there as you left it.
  • Smoother launches: compiled shaders are now kept on disk, so there are fewer small hitches from the second start on.
  • New defaults: Speakers is Stereo, and Smoother legs in turns is on (Settings → Advanced, marked experimental; it changes the picture only and is off in the Original Xbox preset). Recommended and Steam Deck keep it on.
  • A launcher that tells you more:
    • a short yellow note under a setting that has no effect on your screen, or doesn't do what you might think (for example Menus at 4:3, a frame rate limit above your screen with VSync, Show frame rate in fullscreen, HD textures without a pack);
    • a banner when settings.ini couldn't be read as written; lines it doesn't know are kept;
    • Resolution lists only the sizes of your screen shape;
    • Restore asks before it does anything.
  • Safer updates: the launcher can now check a release's signature. It will be used from a later, signed release.
  • Crash reports keep your folders private: no folder name is left in the crash dump, settings.txt or log.txt, and the names you chose (disc image, save folder, HD pack) are hidden. Nothing is sent.

Full list, with every fix: CHANGELOG.md.

Known issues (short)

  • Only Xbox-style (XInput) controllers are supported natively; with Steam Input or DS4Windows, pick PlayStation modern or PS2 original in Button style.
  • Steam Deck and Linux (Proton): 0.1.2 should start there now, but no player has confirmed it yet, the Steam Deck preset included. 5.1 isn't tested on real speakers either. Reports are welcome.
  • Smoother legs in turns is experimental.
  • Some pieces of terrain show visible seams, as in the original game.

Second public test release of OpenTricky, the PC port SSX Tricky never got: a new launcher that keeps itself up to date, the original PS2 controls, wide screens done properly and a round of stability fixes.

Download

OpenTricky-0.1.1-win64.zip: extract it into a new folder, start OpenTricky.exe and choose your disc image. Windows 10/11 64-bit with Direct3D 11.

  • Coming from 0.1.0: settings now live in settings.ini next to OpenTricky.exe; the old SSX Tricky.ini isn't read, so choose your disc image and settings again. Your saves are not touched.
  • Next updates: the launcher tells you when a new version is out and installs it only if you say so. It checks the download against the release's SHA256SUMS.txt and keeps the previous version, which Restore brings back. Its only request is to GitHub, to ask which releases exist (Settings → Advanced → Check for updates: Ask before installing or Never).

Highlights

  • A new launcher, OpenTricky.exe:
    • settings in six tabs, with presets: Original Xbox, Recommended, Steam Deck;
    • full keyboard and controller remapping; the launcher itself works with keyboard, mouse or controller;
    • a What's new panel, links to the release notes, GitHub and Ko-fi, and updates from the launcher (see above).
    • SSX Tricky.exe still starts the game straight away with your settings.
  • The original PS2 controls, everywhere:
    • all 15 grabs on the shoulder buttons and triggers;
    • Boost and Tweak on Square, spins and flips on the D-pad, L3 to cancel a jump, Triangle as the reverse camera in the Pro preset;
    • three button styles: Xbox modern, PlayStation modern or PS2 original (the PS2 look: pixel buttons at their original size), with a matching controller in the trick tutorial and Configure Controller.
  • Wide screens, done properly:
    • the race HUD keeps its proportions on every screen shape, with a size setting;
    • the menus as the Xbox drew them, in 4:3 (or the game's own 16:9 menus);
    • start-up videos, race banners and menu panels keep their shape.
  • More stable:
    • a rare save loss is fixed, and the game now keeps a copy of your previous save (UDATA-backup);
    • rare freezes at start-up, at the end of a start-up video and near the finish line are fixed, and so is the rare crash while a race loads;
    • crash and freeze reports are saved in CrashReports, ready to attach to a bug report. Nothing is sent.
  • Visual fixes: the trick book shows its pictures again instead of red boxes, the respawn flash covers the whole screen, pause panels reach the screen edges, and scenery no longer flashes in the wrong place on Snowdream.
  • Sound and display: 5.1 surround (Speakers setting; not yet tested on real 5.1 speakers), VSync (On, Adaptive or Off), and a frame rate limit that follows your screen.
  • Faster and smoother: less overhead in the busiest scenes of Garibaldi, Snowdream and Elysium, and steadier frames at high frame rates.
  • Optional HD textures (off by default): use your own copy of the HD textures by Bl4ckH4nd (not included).

Full list, with every fix: CHANGELOG.md.

Known issues (short)

  • At the start of a race, the picture can briefly look doubled or shifted with some settings. We're looking into it: tell us your settings.
  • During the opening logo video, the first press of Start (Enter on the keyboard) is sometimes ignored: press it again. Very rarely it ignores more presses: let the video play to the end, or restart the game.
  • Frame rate drops when riders collide; Snowdream runs slower than other tracks.
  • Only Xbox-style (XInput) controllers are supported natively; with Steam Input or DS4Windows, pick PlayStation modern or PS2 original in Button style. The replay help still calls Select BACK.
  • Steam Deck and Linux (Proton) aren't tested yet, and neither is 5.1 on real speakers. Reports are welcome.
  • Some pieces of terrain show visible seams, probably in the original game too.

@GiZcesi GiZcesi released this 04 Oct 11:25
OpenTricky-readme-2496x1404

First public test release of OpenTricky, a recompiled PC port of SSX Tricky (Xbox, 2001). It continues SSX Tricky PC v0.2.0.

⚠️ Unstable. It is fully playable, but please read the Known issues first.
💿 The download is the executable only: no disc image, game data, music or video. You need a disc image (.iso) of your own SSX Tricky Xbox, USA disc.

Download

OpenTricky-0.1.0-unstable-win64.zip: extract it, start SSX Tricky.exe and choose your disc image. Windows 10/11 64-bit with Direct3D 11.

Highlights

  • Looks like the Xbox again:
    • the fog and mist banks, sun lens flares, board tops (Uberboard) and terrain haze are back;
    • colours and brightness match the console;
    • race intros play in full.
  • High frame rates: 60, 120, 144, 240 or unlimited, with interpolation. The game logic stays at 60, so the gameplay is unchanged.
  • Much faster renderer, GPU particles, no more sound crackling, and no more freeze at the EA logo.
  • Ultrawide 21:9 / 32:9, drawn wider by the game itself instead of stretched, with a field-of-view setting.
  • Optional extras, all off by default:
    • SMAA edge smoothing (the HUD stays sharp);
    • soft shadows;
    • draw distance ×1.5 / ×2.
  • New launcher in the game's style, with keyboard and controller remapping, saves in Documents\My Games, and a portable mode.

Full list: CHANGELOG.md.

Known issues (short)

  • Rare crash while a race loads or during its intro: restart the game.
  • 21:9 / 32:9: the race HUD is still stretched (a fix is in progress). On 32:9, use Balanced field of view.
  • A short flash when your rider respawns.
  • No VSync option yet: set the frame rate limit to your monitor's refresh rate.
  • Only Xbox-style controllers are supported natively.
