OpenTricky 0.1.1: I can see my house from here!
Pre-release
Second public test release of OpenTricky, the PC port SSX Tricky never got: a new launcher that keeps itself up to date, the original PS2 controls, wide screens done properly and a round of stability fixes. More on opentricky.com.
⚠️ Unstable. It is fully playable, but please read the Known issues first.
💿 No disc image, game code, music or video is distributed. You need your own copy of the game: a disc image (.isoor.xiso) of SSX Tricky for the original Xbox, USA release.
Download
OpenTricky-0.1.1-win64.zip: extract it into a new folder, start OpenTricky.exe and choose your disc image. Windows 10/11 64-bit with Direct3D 11.
- Coming from 0.1.0: settings now live in
settings.ininext toOpenTricky.exe; the oldSSX Tricky.iniisn't read, so choose your disc image and settings again. Your saves are not touched. - Next updates: the launcher tells you when a new version is out and installs it only if you say so. It checks the download against the release's
SHA256SUMS.txtand keeps the previous version, which Restore brings back. Its only request is to GitHub, to ask which releases exist (Settings → Advanced → Check for updates: Ask before installing or Never).
Highlights
- A new launcher,
OpenTricky.exe:- settings in six tabs, with presets: Original Xbox, Recommended, Steam Deck;
- full keyboard and controller remapping; the launcher itself works with keyboard, mouse or controller;
- a What's new panel, links to the release notes, GitHub and Ko-fi, and updates from the launcher (see above).
SSX Tricky.exestill starts the game straight away with your settings.
- The original PS2 controls, everywhere:
- all 15 grabs on the shoulder buttons and triggers;
- Boost and Tweak on Square, spins and flips on the D-pad, L3 to cancel a jump, Triangle as the reverse camera in the Pro preset;
- three button styles: Xbox modern, PlayStation modern or PS2 original (the PS2 look: pixel buttons at their original size), with a matching controller in the trick tutorial and Configure Controller.
- Wide screens, done properly:
- the race HUD keeps its proportions on every screen shape, with a size setting;
- the menus as the Xbox drew them, in 4:3 (or the game's own 16:9 menus);
- start-up videos, race banners and menu panels keep their shape.
- More stable:
- a rare save loss is fixed, and the game now keeps a copy of your previous save (
UDATA-backup); - rare freezes at start-up, at the end of a start-up video and near the finish line are fixed, and so is the rare crash while a race loads;
- crash and freeze reports are saved in
CrashReports, ready to attach to a bug report. Nothing is sent.
- a rare save loss is fixed, and the game now keeps a copy of your previous save (
- Visual fixes: the trick book shows its pictures again instead of red boxes, the respawn flash covers the whole screen, pause panels reach the screen edges, and scenery no longer flashes in the wrong place on Snowdream.
- Sound and display: 5.1 surround (Speakers setting; not yet tested on real 5.1 speakers), VSync (On, Adaptive or Off), and a frame rate limit that follows your screen.
- Faster and smoother: less overhead in the busiest scenes of Garibaldi, Snowdream and Elysium, and steadier frames at high frame rates.
- Optional HD textures (off by default): use your own copy of the HD textures by Bl4ckH4nd (not included).

Known issues (short)
- At the start of a race, the picture can briefly look doubled or shifted with some settings. We're looking into it: tell us your settings.
- During the opening logo video, the first press of Start (Enter on the keyboard) is sometimes ignored: press it again. Very rarely it ignores more presses: let the video play to the end, or restart the game.
- Frame rate drops when riders collide; Snowdream runs slower than other tracks.
- Only Xbox-style (XInput) controllers are supported natively; with Steam Input or DS4Windows, pick PlayStation modern or PS2 original in Button style. The replay help still calls Select BACK.
- Steam Deck and Linux (Proton) aren't tested yet, and neither is 5.1 on real speakers. Reports are welcome.
- Some pieces of terrain show visible seams, probably in the original game too.
