plavno v0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 19:47

Changes

  • YouTube Music Flow presets: Calm (Chill), Energetic (Energize), Work (Focus), and the usual personal mix in Balanced. Available with signed-in cookies and no --seed; also works in Wave Shuffle. Focus playlists can include vocals.
  • Play favorites from newest to oldest with Shift+F or --favorites-newest on Yandex Music, VK Music, and YouTube Music. Holding Shift changes the favorites button; Windows console and Kitty keyboard modifier events are supported.
  • YouTube Music likes, Liked Music shuffle, and cookie-only personal mixes seeded automatically from Music recommendations.
  • Per-run track radio overrides with --seed for YouTube Music, SoundCloud, and Spotify.
  • YouTube playback uses an external yt-dlp, handles JavaScript challenges, waits for stream availability, and downloads audio in bounded ranges with CDN fallback. Install yt-dlp separately; Node.js 22+ with yt-dlp-ejs or yt-dlp's supported Deno setup is needed for full support.
  • Service helpers can be found next to the player. Conversion and buffered-stream failures retain useful error details.

Downloads

Each archive contains plavno, the Spotify helper, README, and license.

  • Linux x86_64 and ARM64: glibc 2.35+, ALSA (libasound.so.2), and D-Bus (libdbus-1.so.3). Audio through PipeWire/PulseAudio needs an ALSA plugin. Alpine/musl needs a separate build.
  • macOS: Apple Silicon and Intel builds, checked on macOS 15.
  • Windows 10/11 x64: MSVC build with the C runtime linked statically.

Extract the archive and put both executables in a directory on PATH. Install yt-dlp separately for YouTube and ffmpeg for HLS playback; browser-based service sign-in needs Chrome/Chromium (or Edge on Windows). See README for setup and source builds.

macOS users can install the player and Spotify helper with brew install gmelikov/plavno/plavno. The tap is updated automatically after the release checks pass.

Source installation: cargo install plavno --locked.

@github-actions github-actions released this 16 Oct 12:07

plavno 0.3.1 adds native macOS and Windows playback, system media controls, and local music playback.

What's new

  • macOS: CoreAudio playback, media keys, and Now Playing with track information, artwork, position, and speed.
  • Windows: WASAPI playback and System Media Transport Controls, including media keys and track information.
  • Local music: recursive directory shuffle, track metadata and embedded covers, and participation in the mixed source. Sources without mood support play all tracks regardless of the selected mood.
  • Version output in plavno --version and the TUI header.
  • Five prebuilt archives with the player and both Spotify/YouTube helpers, plus automated Homebrew publication.

Install

macOS, Apple Silicon or Intel:

brew install gmelikov/plavno/plavno

For Linux and Windows, download the matching archive below and put all three executables in a directory on PATH. Each archive also includes README and the license. SHA256SUMS contains the checksums for all five archives.

Platform Requirements
Linux x86_64 / ARM64 glibc 2.35+, ALSA (libasound.so.2), and D-Bus (libdbus-1.so.3). PipeWire/PulseAudio needs its ALSA plugin. Alpine/musl requires a separate build.
macOS Apple Silicon / Intel Native builds tested on macOS 15.
Windows 10/11 x64 MSVC build with the C runtime linked statically.

Install ffmpeg for HLS playback. Browser-based service sign-in needs Chrome/Chromium, or Edge on Windows. These programs are not bundled.

The player can also be installed from crates.io:

cargo install plavno --version 0.3.1 --locked

Cargo installation builds the player only. See the README for build prerequisites and helper setup when installing from source.

Full changelog

plavno v0.3.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 15 Oct 16:29

An audio-reactive 3D dancer joins the wave, with native sixel graphics and a detailed skin.

Visualization

  • Toggle Wave/Dance with b, or start with --dance.
  • Continuous procedural movement blends with rhythm, energy, tempo, and available genre metadata. Track changes retain the pose and transition smoothly.
  • A spatial rig adds body turns, fixed-length limbs, planted feet, joint constraints, and depth-based occlusion.
  • Native sixel output includes a detailed violet-jacket skin, hair, headphones, facial details, and cyan sneakers. Compare with --dance-skin silhouette.
  • Sixel redraws changed regions by default; --sixel-update full remains available. Static TUI caching and fewer pixel passes reduce rendering work.

Try it in a sixel-capable terminal:

plavno --dance-style flow --renderer sixel

Braille remains the default renderer. The audio wave, album artwork, mouse controls, and hotkeys remain available with the dancer.

Yandex Music

  • Reuse pending stream resolutions and cache stream metadata across restarts, scoped to the account and quality policy.
  • Honor HTTP 429 and Retry-After with bounded, persistent cooldowns shared by player and diagnostic runs.
  • Run plavno diagnose yandex to check API and audio CDN access without exposing credentials or signed URLs.

Install

cargo install plavno --locked --version 0.3.0

Or download the Linux x86_64 or ARM64 (aarch64) archive below. Binaries are built on Ubuntu 22.04 and require glibc 2.35+, ALSA (libasound.so.2), and D-Bus (libdbus-1.so.3). Install ffmpeg for HLS playback. Spotify and YouTube helpers are separate builds.

Each archive contains plavno, LICENSE, and README.md. Verify downloads with SHA256SUMS.

The player now uses one artwork-backed panel for the wave, progress bar, and controls.

  • Hover over the left, center, or right third of the album artwork for Previous, Play/Pause, or Next. Track text selection and explicit controls take priority.
  • Click the progress bar to jump immediately. Drag with the button held for audible forward or backward scrubbing at 2–4x, then resume at the exact selected position and your chosen playback speed.
  • Adjust playback speed from 0.1x to 2x in 0.05 steps with the inline buttons, [ / ], or the mouse wheel over Speed. The default is 1x; changing speed also changes pitch. MPRIS exposes the selected rate.
  • Volume controls sit at the bottom right, with notifications above them.
  • Chrome/Chromium sign-in allows more time for browser startup and identifies the command when a response times out.

Install from crates.io:

cargo install plavno --version 0.2.0 --locked

The attached Linux x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64) binaries are built on Ubuntu 22.04. They require glibc 2.35+, ALSA (libasound.so.2), and D-Bus (libdbus-1.so.3). Install ffmpeg for HLS playback. Spotify and YouTube helpers are separate builds. SHA256SUMS contains the archive checksums.

@gmelikov gmelikov released this 13 Oct 22:01

Linux binaries for x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64), built against Ubuntu 22.04 libraries. Binary startup and glibc symbol requirements checked for both architectures; ARM64 smoke-tested under QEMU.

Requires glibc 2.35+, ALSA (libasound.so.2), and D-Bus (libdbus-1.so.3). PipeWire/PulseAudio needs its ALSA plugin. Install ffmpeg for HLS playback. Spotify and YouTube helpers are separate builds.

Extract the archive for your architecture and run ./plavno, or place the binary in ~/.local/bin. Verify the download with sha256sum --check SHA256SUMS when both archives are present, or sha256sum --check --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS for one architecture.

To install from crates.io:

cargo install plavno --locked
