Release list
PrimeRecomp v0.0.2 (early beta)
PrimeRecomp runs Metroid Prime Remastered (Nintendo Switch) natively on Windows and Linux, including the Steam Deck. The game's code is statically recompiled for your PC and the Switch's system services and graphics are reimplemented on the PC, with Vulkan for the graphics. No emulator runs.
PrimeRecomp is built on LAS Recomp by Peiikai and the LAS Recomp contributors. Nearly everything that makes it possible is their work. Full credits are in the README.
Note
No game files are included. You need your own copy of Metroid Prime Remastered v1.0.0 (no updates), dumped from your own console and extracted: a folder that holds exefs and romfs.
What's new in v0.0.2
- Linux and the Steam Deck (experimental):
PrimeRecomp-v0.0.2-linux-x86_64.AppImage. So far it has only been tested on a software renderer (the start screen, the setup, the title screen and a loaded save), not yet on a real Linux GPU or a Steam Deck. Reports, good or bad, are very welcome. - Vulkan fixes for drivers other than NVIDIA's: the stencil state is always set, and the game memory the GPU reads directly stays within the driver's allocation limit.
Getting started
Windows
- Download
PrimeRecomp-v0.0.2-windows.zipbelow. Extract it to a folder you can write to, such as Documents or a games folder (not Program Files). - Run
primerecomp.exe. Choose your game folder (the one withexefsandromfs), then click Set up. Setup runs once: it copies the game files and recompiles the game on your PC, which takes a few minutes. - Press Play.
Linux
- Download
PrimeRecomp-v0.0.2-linux-x86_64.AppImagebelow and make it executable (chmod +x, or Properties -> Permissions in your file manager). - Run it, choose your game folder, Set up, then Play. Everything it writes goes to
~/.local/share/primerecomp.
Steam Deck
- In Desktop Mode, put the AppImage in your home folder, right-click it -> Properties -> Permissions -> "Is executable", and copy your game files onto the Deck or its SD card.
- Run the AppImage, choose the game folder and Set up (once, in Desktop Mode: the folder picker is a desktop file dialog).
- Add it to Steam: Games -> Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library -> Browse (file type "All Files") -> the AppImage. It then starts from Game Mode.
- In the game, press both sticks in to open PrimeRecomp's menu and set Controls -> Face buttons to Xbox, so the Deck's A button is A.
More in docs/linux.md, including how to keep the game files on the SD card.
Requirements: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), or a 64-bit x86 Linux with glibc 2.35 or newer (SteamOS included); a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell / AMD Zen or newer); a GPU with a Vulkan 1.3 driver; and about 15 GB of free disk space.
What's in this build
- Boot, menus, the Frigate Orpheon, and Tallon IV. The Landing Site, Chozo Ruins and Magmoor Caverns have been played so far. Saving and loading work.
- Mouse aim that turns and aims directly, like a PC shooter. Full keyboard, mouse and controller rebinding.
- Controllers work out of the box (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, Steam Controller, Steam Deck and others), with gyro aiming and rumble.
- Resolutions up to 8K, AMD FSR 1, SMAA and anisotropic filtering.
- Ultrawide support (the HUD stays in the middle 16:9 area) and adjustable field of view.
- 60 or 120 fps. Every cutscene can be skipped.
To open PrimeRecomp's own menu, press F1, or press both sticks in on a controller. Press F11 or Alt+Enter for fullscreen. The README lists all keyboard controls.
Known issues
This is an early beta.
- Some lighting glitches. Visor effects such as rain drops sometimes don't appear.
- Nobody has played past Magmoor Caverns yet, so later areas may crash or freeze.
- The Linux version hasn't run on real Linux hardware or a Steam Deck yet (see above).
Reporting bugs
Please open an issue and attach primerecomp.log (Windows: in the PrimeRecomp folder; Linux and Steam Deck: in ~/.local/share/primerecomp). For a graphics problem, press F9 at the spot to save a capture to build/f9_<frame>/ in that folder (zip it up), and press F8 to note your position in positions.txt.
