Hell Night: Dark Messiah Recompiled 0.1.7
New: higher resolution and widescreen.
- Supersampling up to 8x. The pinned framework capped Supersampling at 4x, and a higher value in
settings.tomlwas rejected and fell back to 1x.patches/0004andpatches/recomp-ui/0001raise the limit to 8x; pick it in the launcher's Settings. On the test laptop (Intel Iris Xe) the intro held 60 fps at 4x, 6x and 8x alike; gameplay at 8x was not timed. - Widescreen mod. The Mods page has a new Display group with Widescreen (off by default, 16:9 or 21:9). It widens the 3D view to fill the window while the HUD, the dialogue box and characters keep their proportions. Menus, the title screen and pre-rendered movies stay 4:3 with side bars.
Pre-rendered movies are fixed-resolution video on the disc, so Supersampling does not sharpen them; FMV filter in Settings controls how they are smoothed.
Tested on Windows x64 with the NTSC-converted dump: at 16:9, gameplay and dialogue in the first sewer area fill the window with a wider view, and the compass, characters and text box are not stretched. The 8x setting is confirmed in the runtime log ("internal scale 8x").
Not tested yet: 21:9, widescreen in later areas (the game may not draw everything the wider view reveals), 8x during gameplay, a full playthrough, and the Linux/macOS packages beyond the automated checks.
Everything from 0.1.6 still applies. To update, extract this ZIP over your existing folder and run Generate & rebuild again.

Hell Night: Dark Messiah Recompiled 0.1.6
New: three more cheats on the Mods page.
| Cheat | Effect |
|---|---|
| Show Full Map | The map (Square) shows the whole floor, including places you have not visited |
| Walk Through Walls | Turns off wall collision so you can walk out of bounds |
| The Monster Can't Hurt You | The monster still chases you but cannot harm you |
These come from the DuckStation cheat database entry for SLES-01562. Each changes an instruction in the game's code, so they stay on for the whole session: switch them on the Mods page before pressing PLAY. With Walk Through Walls on you can leave the map or skip story triggers and get stuck, so save first. All cheats are off by default.
Tested on Windows x64 with the NTSC-converted dump:
- Walk Through Walls: checked against a run with it off. With it on the player walks through a tunnel wall; with it off the same input stops at the wall.
- Show Full Map: with it on, the map showed the whole first sewer area. Not compared with a run with it off.
- The Monster Can't Hurt You: the patches apply and the game runs normally, but no monster encounter was played.
The database's "Hide Compass" code is left out: in this build it also removed characters and scenery.
Everything from 0.1.5 still applies, including Redump and Undub v1.1 disc support. To update, extract this ZIP over your existing folder and run Generate & rebuild again.
Not tested yet: the new cheats on the Redump and Undub dumps, a full playthrough on any dump, and the Linux/macOS packages beyond the automated checks.

Hell Night: Dark Messiah Recompiled 0.1.5
Fixed: the Redump dump of Hellnight (Europe) is now accepted.
Releases up to 0.1.4 only listed the hashes of the dump used in development, which turned out to be an NTSC-converted copy and not the Redump dump. A genuine Redump disc was rejected at Generate with a digest mismatch. Thanks to the player who reported it on quiverlauncher.com.
Accepted discs (data track 01, 633,786,384 bytes):
- Redump (redump.org disc 7235), MD5
050d2848368af2ef945706bc73ef69ef - The NTSC-converted copy, MD5
01ce6367485ab848973be612df58b5b9 - Undub v1.1, MD5
cb6f8e5a863920bf33d8cfe78dd684df
Tested on Windows x64: with an image matching the Redump hashes, and with the Undub v1.1 dump, the disc check passes, the game generates and builds, and it boots through the Konami logo and the intro FMV. Those two discs run in 50 Hz PAL mode and show the Konami logo in full. Nothing past the intro was tested on them. The NTSC-converted copy still builds as before.
The README is corrected: the 60 Hz behaviour and the low FMV placement it described belong to the NTSC-converted copy, not to the European disc itself.
Everything from 0.1.4 still applies. To update, extract this ZIP over your existing folder and run Generate & rebuild again.
Not tested yet: gameplay, saving and the cheats on the Redump and Undub dumps, a full playthrough on any dump, and the Linux/macOS packages beyond the automated checks.

Hell Night: Dark Messiah Recompiled 0.1.4
Fixed: thin vertical lines on the anti-piracy and Konami logo screens when Texture filtering is set to Bilinear.
Those screens are drawn from 64-pixel-wide image strips. At the left edge of each strip, the bilinear filter blended with a pixel from the far right of the same strip instead of staying on the edge, which left a thin line at every strip boundary. patches/0003-bilinear-tile-seam.patch fixes the filter in the pinned framework. Nearest filtering (the default) was never affected.
Tested on Windows x64: the Windows package was built end to end from this release kit with a real disc. With bilinear filtering on, the Konami logo and anti-piracy screens show no seam lines; before the fix the same test measured lines at three positions across the Konami screen. Menus and 3D gameplay look unchanged.
Everything from 0.1.3 still applies: the project is titled Hell Night: Dark Messiah Recompiled (listed as Dark Messiah in the launcher), the Cheats group is on the Mods page, OpenBIOS is included, FMVs fill the frame, PGO optimize works on Windows, and memory-card saving and loading work. To update, extract this ZIP over your existing folder and run Generate & rebuild again.
Not tested yet: a full playthrough, and the Linux/macOS packages beyond the automated checks.

Hell Night: Dark Messiah Recompiled 0.1.3
The project is now called Hell Night: Dark Messiah Recompiled.
This is a display-name change only:
- The game window is titled Hell Night: Dark Messiah Recompiled.
- The launcher lists the game as Dark Messiah.
- The repository address, the program name (
Hellnight_Recompiled), the download file names and your saves are unchanged, so existing installs and links keep working.
It is still a native PC build of Hellnight (PlayStation, 1999; Dark Messiah in Japan), and you still need your own Hellnight (Europe) disc, SLES-01562.
Everything from 0.1.2 still applies: the Cheats group on the Mods page, OpenBIOS included, FMVs fill the frame, PGO optimize works on Windows, and memory-card saving and loading work. To update, extract this ZIP over your existing folder and run Generate & rebuild again.
Tested on Windows x64: the renamed build shows the new titles, verifies the disc, and still finds existing saves. This release's Windows package was not rebuilt end to end; the only changes from 0.1.2 are name strings.
Not tested yet: a full playthrough, and the Linux/macOS packages beyond the automated checks.

Hellnight Recompiled 0.1.2
New: a Cheats group on the launcher's Mods page.
Open Mods on the launcher screen, tick what you want, then press PLAY. All are off by default.
| Cheat | Effect | GameShark code |
|---|---|---|
| OK Status | Keeps your status at OK | 800AD840 0000 |
| Infinite Ammo | Your companion's ammunition never runs out | 800ADD54 0001 |
| Choose Companion | Forces who follows you: Naomi, Kamiya, Ivanoff, Rene or The Monster | 800ADD50 000N + 800ADD58 0000 |
The codes are for the European disc (SLES-01562), credited to DAVIN THE RAVEN on psxdatacenter. A small plugin (src/hellnight_mods.c) re-applies them every frame through the framework's mod system (mods/packages/hellnight.cheats).
Tested on Windows x64: the Windows package was built end to end from this release kit with a real disc. The Cheats group appears, and OK Status and Infinite Ammo write their values every frame while the game plays normally. Choose Companion has not been tried in play. It overrides the story's own choice of companion, so save before using it.
Everything from 0.1.1 still applies: bring your own Hellnight (Europe) disc, OpenBIOS is included, FMVs fill the frame, PGO optimize works on Windows, and memory-card saving and loading work. To update, extract this ZIP over your existing folder and run Generate & rebuild again.
Not tested yet: a full playthrough, and the Linux/macOS packages beyond the automated checks.

Hellnight Recompiled 0.1.1
PGO optimize now works on Windows.
In 0.1.0, the launcher's PGO optimize failed during the first training run with [WinError 5] Access is denied. Even without that error, it would only have produced an ordinary build, because this framework revision never turned PGO on.
patches/0002-pgo-windows-soft-stop.patch: training runs now close the game window normally instead of force-killing it, so the profile data gets saved.CMakeLists.txt: the build now applies-fprofile-generate/-fprofile-useitself, since the pinned framework ignoresPSX_PGO.
Tested on Windows x64: both training runs saved their profiles, the profiles merged, and the optimized build runs at a steady 60 fps.
PGO optimize takes about 25–35 minutes on a laptop: a full build, two 60-second training runs, then the optimized build. Leave the game window alone while it trains.
Everything from 0.1.0 still applies: bring your own Hellnight (Europe) disc (SLES-01562), OpenBIOS is included, and FMVs fill the frame. To update, extract this ZIP over your 0.1.0 folder and run Generate & rebuild again.
Memory-card saving and loading have since been confirmed on Windows. The save is written to saves/card1.mcd.
Not tested yet: a full playthrough, and the Linux/macOS packages beyond the automated checks.

Hellnight Recompiled 0.1.0
First release of Hellnight Recompiled, a native PC build of Hellnight (PlayStation, 1999) made with the PSXRecomp static recompiler.
You need your own Hellnight (Europe) disc (SLES-01562) as a CUE/BIN dump. These packages contain no game disc, BIOS dump, generated game code or saves. The setup program generates the game from your disc. No BIOS dump is needed: the included OpenBIOS is used.
Install
- Download the ZIP for your platform and extract all of it into a writable folder.
- Run
Hellnight_Recompiledand select yourHellnight (Europe).cue. - Click Generate & rebuild. On Windows the setup program can download the build tools for you. On Linux and macOS, install CMake, Ninja, Python 3 and a C/C++ compiler first.
What was tested (Windows x64)
- The Windows package was built end to end from this exact release kit and a real disc.
- Boots through the intro and FMVs to the title screen. New Game and early gameplay work, at about 100% speed and 60 fps.
- FMVs fill the frame. The European disc keeps a PAL-tuned vertical range while running in NTSC mode, which a real NTSC console shows low. This build presents that range directly.
Not tested yet
- Memory-card save/load and a full playthrough
- The Linux and macOS packages. They pass the automated build and package checks, but nobody has played on them yet.
Please don't use the launcher's "PGO optimize" option. It is broken on Windows in this framework revision.
