/model support for "gemini-pro-latest" alias

What happened?

Access to gemini-3.1-pro-preview will be required for all users within 2 weeks, even free tier users, or it will break access because gemini-3-pro will be turned off on March 9, 2026. I received an e-mail today Feb 27, 2026 from googleaistudio-noreply@google.com with the following:

"Action required: Gemini 3 Pro Preview will be discontinued on March 9, 2026 in favor of the new model. Please upgrade to Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview beforehand to prevent any service disruption. Additionally, on March 6, 2026, we will switch the gemini-pro-latest alias to point to the new 3.1 Pro model."

It seems like the real fix moving forward is to support the "gemini-pro-latest" model alias and let the backend figure it out.

Hi! I’d like to work on this. I was able to reproduce this locally on latest main.

My understanding is that gemini-pro-latest is currently not handled in the CLI’s model resolution path, so it falls through as a raw model name and can trigger the “not found or invalid” error depending on backend availability.
Proposed approach:

• Add compatibility alias handling in the model resolution/normalization layer
• Map gemini-pro-latest to the current canonical Pro model used by the CLI
• Keep existing validation and fallback behavior unchanged
• Add regression tests for alias resolution and expected behavior
• Update docs so the alias is clearly documented

Feature request for model alias support.

Effort Analysis:
Adding support for a model alias involves updating the model resolution map and schema, which is a trivial configuration logic adjustment (effort/small).
