Ubuntu 16.04, tried to install only the NotoColorEmoji.ttf, without success

Maybe I tried to be too smart, but because I am on quite old Ubuntu, I thought of just installing the
NotoColorEmoji and using it for GNU emacs (28)

I copied NotoColorEmoji.ttf into
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/noto

And run, as I always do
sudo fc-cache -f

However
sudo fc-list | grep Emoji
only returned
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/noto/NotoEmoji-Regular.ttf: Noto Emoji:style=Regular

So the NotoColorEmji.ttf is somehow not found by the system 🥲

have you tried to use homedir instead?

mkdir -p ~/.fonts/NotoEmoji
curl -L 'https://raw.githubusercontent.com/googlefonts/noto-emoji/main/fonts/NotoColorEmoji.ttf' \
  -o ~/.fonts/NotoEmoji/NotoColorEmoji.ttf

fc-cache -fv

I just did, interesting: `/home/oub/.fonts: caching, new cache contents: 25 fonts, 1 dirs /home/oub/.fonts/NotoEmoji: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 0 dirs /var/cache/fontconfig: not cleaning unwritable cache directory /home/oub/.cache/fontconfig: cleaning cache directory /home/oub/.fontconfig: not cleaning non-existent cache directory` The /var/cache/fontconfig message is no surprise since I did not use sudo, but something is odd here, or fc-cache too old? Does not work, neither. Very strange.

That font's not compatible with Ubuntu 16. To get it to work:

• download https://github.com/googlefonts/noto-emoji/raw/main/fonts/NotoColorEmoji-emojicompat.ttf
• add it to ~/.fonts
• run sudo fc-cache -fv
• run sudo fc-list | grep -i Emoji

You should see your font show up, which means it's installed. It'll appear like:

~/.fonts/NotoColorEmoji-emojicompat.ttf: Noto Color Emoji:style=Regular

NOTE This should be the ONLY instance of NotoColorEmoji. If you have any other entries show up, they need to be deleted.

I will delete the second one then.
