"Classic mode" - What, how, where? #10440

I'm currently upgrading our "monolithic" Mimir-setup and spotted ominous "Classic mode enabled" warning messages in the logs that we didn't have previously I think - I could not find anything useful in the documentations searching for "classic mode" so I wonder what this "classic mode" is. I also could not find something mentioned about "classic mode" in the changelogs 🤷 Can please anyone explain? |

"Classic mode enabled" is a log message coming from upstream Prometheus Alertmanager that's indicating the "UTF-8 strict mode" support is not enabled. I think it's a very misleading message and we should fix it. Could you open an issue about it, to mention we should improve that log message, please? |

If you're looking for a description of the modes for Alertmanager UTF-8 migration you can find this here https://prometheus.io/docs/alerting/latest/configuration/#alertmanager-server-operational-modes. Perhaps it would help if some of this was copied into Mimir docs? |
